SG MESSENGER: 25 June 2021, No.33 www.springgroveschool.co.uk HIGHLIGHTS OF THE WEEK What a busy and exciting week! It started with a rather damp visit for Prep 4 to Samphire Hoe, followed by a slightly less damp trip for Year 1 to Howlett’s on Tuesday. On Tuesday evening we held our virtual ‘Meet the Teachers’ event to introduce parents to the form teachers for next year. Wednesday we started the day with croissants and entertainment in our fantastic French Breakfast. Then Thursday came—and the weather gods smiled on us with blue skies for our Summer Prom concert. I would like to say a big thank you to all of the staff and children who have worked so hard to make all these events happen this week, and to our parents for all your support. It was lovely to see so many parents on the front lawn enjoying the performances on Thursday afternoon. Next week is just as busy with Teddy Bears’ Picnics in Nursery and the Prep 5 and 6 show ‘Peter Pan’ at the end of the week. We look forward to welcoming parents into school once again for these events. Mrs Jaggard
SUMMER PROM CONCERT What an afternoon! We had dance, music, drama—all finished off by Prep 6’s Hatwalk Catwalk. Well done to all the performers—it was fantastic to be able to showcase the wealth of talent across school. It was also lovely to welcome so many parents into school, and some very special guests - Mr and Mrs Jones—back in Kent for the first time since they retired last summer. More photos to follow next week!
SWIM TO WIN—STAFF VS CHILDREN As part of our fundraising effort for Histio UK and the Padua Ward I would like to introduce the ‘Swim to Win’ challenge. On Wednesday 7th July a highly trained staff swimming team, including Mrs Jaggard, Mrs Lee-Browne, Mr Mallelieu, Mr Fenwick, Miss Rimmer, Miss Drury, Mrs Brogan-Jones and Mr Smith will be setting the children a challenge. They are going to swim as a relay team in the school pool and complete as many lengths as possible in 15 minutes. Some early testing indicates that they will complete between 90 and 120 lengths in their allotted time. Why the difference? Well, Mr Fenwick is young, fit and optimistic, and I am older, less fit and realistic!!! Even so the distance will be set and the gauntlet thrown down! Throughout the day the children will have a period of time to try and beat the teachers. Prep 6 will have 24 minutes, Prep 5 26 minutes, Prep 4 28 minutes and Prep 3 will have 30 minutes. Years 1 and 2 will have to beat the number of lengths completed by the teachers in the first 3 minutes of their swim. (Years 1 and 2 will have staff in the water swimming/towing them with flotation devices.) I can hear the questions now… is that fair, who worked out the handicap system, how do I get involved and sponsor this prestigious event? Well, I worked out the handicap system based on last week's swimming lessons, when the children were shown how the challenge will work and then performed half of their allotted challenge time as a measure. Each group hit about 60 lengths in half of their available time… so the pressure is well and truly on! It will be a truly fun event and we will keep you up to speed via the various social media platforms as to how each group gets on. How can you get involved? Please sponsor the event by donating, and even make a prediction on whether your child's class will beat the teacher's challenge… We will keep you updated during the day! Please donate via our JustGiving Crowdfunder page which can be accessed here. All the money raised will be split 50/50 between Histio UK and the Padua Ward. Thank you in advance for your support for our swimming challenge and our chosen charities. Mr Smith WETSUIT RESCUE 500,000 surfers in the UK throw away their wetsuits every two years. These wetsuits create 380 tonnes of non-biodegradable waste every year. As you prepare for this year's summer staycation, if you find any wetsuits that are old or too small please donate them to SG's 'Wetsuit Rescue'. The wetsuits will be donated to Lorna Doyle (http://www.lorna- doyle.com), a friend of SG and exponent of the circular economy. Lorna works with local communities, surf schools, schools, yacht clubs and outdoor water sports centres to save their wetsuit waste from landfill and to make it into high end fashion products. There is a collection box in the foyer - please give any unwanted suits to the pick-up/drop off team. Thanks Mr Curnow
KENT FESTIVAL OF SPEECH AND DRAMA The following pupils took part in the Kent Festival of Speech and Drama on Saturday: Willow K, Ellen P, Camilla B, Myra T, Aarav S, Emilia H-H, Andrew D, James D, Mariella C, Liberty W, Wilfie E, Scarlett W-J, Isla K, Sam M and Tom M. Well done to everyone for taking part—everyone received a certificate and we’re delighted that the following children came home with some very impressive cups: Sam M: winner of the Humorous Verse cup in his age group Ellen P: winner of her age group with poems about the seaside Emilia H-H: winner of the Verse Speaking cap in her age group We celebrated everyone in assembly this morning and Sam M spoke some very wise words about the dos and don’ts of taking part and winning. Great words Sam! TRIP TO HOWLETTS Year 1 had a wonderful trip to Howletts Zoo on Tuesday. The rain held off and the children behaved beautifully. We walked for miles and saw many amazing animals including elephants, rhinos and gorillas. We had a fabulous time and everyone was exhausted by home time:)
JAKEY’S AMAZING SWIM When Jakey W in Reception class found out about our charity plans for this term he was so touched by his friend Daisy’s story that he came up with a plan—he would swim 10 lengths of the school pool to raise money for Histio UK and the Padua Ward. Jakey’s amazing swim took place in the pool with Tobie this week, and he was cheered on by his family and by Daisy and her family. Jakey swam 113m and showed off a variety of strokes to complete his challenge. Even more amazingly Jakey has already raised nearly £1000 for Daisy’s charities—what a fantastic effort! We are so proud of you Jakey—well done!!
A WET DAY AT SAMPHIRE HOE! Year 2 went on a trip to Samphire Hoe on Monday. Unfortunately it was VERY wet! But Mr Mal still managed to take a few pictures and they had fun—although it seemed like a good idea to come back to school early and dry off!
DISPLAY OF THE WEEK Display of the Week this week is Prep 3’s beautiful Viking brooches. WELCOME TO JUNO It’s lovely to welcome Mrs Demset’s Juno in her role as a therapy dog, supporting children in English, BOOST (nurture group) and in individual sessions.
SWIM FOR ALEX News of another amazing swim that’s due to happen next week. SG Mum (and OSG) Roz South is part of a 4- person relay team that will set off to swim the Channel to raise money for two very special charities. This is her story: ‘Alex was just 34 years old when he died of Bowel Cancer leaving behind a distraught wife, 2 young sons and a loving family. Alex’s wife Roz and 3 close friends are committed to raising awareness of bowel cancer in young people and will be embarking on a relay swim across the English Channel in the summer of 2021. We have set ourselves a target of raising £50,000 that will be split evenly between 2 charities which are very close to our hearts: Bowel Cancer UK - the leading bowel cancer charity, they are running a number of campaigns including their Never Too Young campaign, this is very close to our hearts. Team Verrico - a small, wonderful charity who came to Roz’s rescue after she was diagnosed with breast cancer a week after loosing Alex. Roz underwent 9 months of treatment to include lumpectomy, chemotherapy and radiotherapy all while struggling with grief and she owes so much thanks to this wonderful charity for their help and support. They are a no-salary charity kept afloat solely through donations. They provide funding for research, counselling, practical help like childcare and transport and second opinions following a cancer diagnosis. We need your help to spread the word and help us achieve our goal!’ Find out more at https://www.swimforalex.com/ SCARLETT’S ASSEMBLY VIDEO Our Friday Assembly this week featured a lovely video made by Scarlett W-J which showcased her talent for performing arts, and was a very touching tribute to the importance of school in every child’s life. Well done to Scarlett for making the video, and thank you to Scarlett’s parents for coming into school an being part of our Assembly presentation.
FRENCH BREAKFAST Nous aimons manger les croissants et pains au chocolat! Both Prep 4 and Prep 6 gave performances at the French Breakfast organised by Mme Leavey on Wednesday. We were able to invite in Prep 6 parents, and a lovely time was had by all! FOREST SCHOOL Reception went to Forest School this week—they started with the story of ‘The Hungry Caterpillar’ and learned all about butterflies and symmetry before making their own creatures using hapezome (or leaf-bashing!). The children also learned the legend of King Alfred and the burnt cakes before seeing how the fungus that bears his name can be used to start a fire. The session ended with marshmallows around the fire—yum!
SPORT U11A v JKS (H) - match report by Lily E It was a warm sunny day and we won the toss and fielded first. Isabelle bowled first and got 2 wickets!! The next bowler was Pia who bowled really well. Time passed and it was Aeva’s time to bowl and she bowled superb! Unluckily no one managed to catch any one out but Junior King’s got lots of 4s and 6s so we didn’t have much of a chance but we tried our hardest. After Junior King’s had batted they scored 266 runs. Pia and Isabelle batted first and sadly got out twice. Next up was me and Josie and I faced first and got a 4! Next up was Isla and Aeva and they got out 2 times as well but nevertheless it was Charlotte and Sophia’s turn to bat and Charlotte got lots of 4s and so did Sophia! Next up was Olivia and Isobel and they didn't get out! Lots of 4s were scored and there was no better way for olivia ending the match by getting a 6!!! Our final score was 235 leaving Junior King’s to take the glory but everyone played really well! Player of the match was Olivia chosen by Junior Kings and Mrs Langford’s player of the match was Isabelle. Thank you to Junior Kiing’s for coming and to Mrs Langford for coaching us! And the kitkats! U11B v JKS (H) - match report by Poppy and Anabelle On Wednesday 23rd of June the U11 B team played Junior Kings. After losing the toss we batted first and started off great and the first pair got 214 runs, sadly after getting out we had ended up 214 runs for the second pair. We got up to 219 runs in the third pair and in the end we finished with 244 runs. When bowling Isabella PK hit the wicket and got -5. Our second to last bowler, Annabelle, got a wicket which again was -5. Unfortunately, Spring Grove lost to just 3 runs with 244 to 247. Mrs Brogan- Jones and the umpire from Junior King’s said that our communication and batting was very good and she gave us all the players of the match. The Junior King's umpire said that Annabelle was player of the match for them. Thank you to Junior King’s for a great match, and thank you to Mrs Brogan-Jones for umpiring. FANCY LETTERS In Art Club this week the children created some beautiful calligraphy.
