2020 Winter/Spring Program Guide Page 3 Welcome to Highlands United Church Welcome to the Winter/Spring 2020 Program Guide for Highlands United Church. In your hands is much of the information and background to the rich and vibrant life of faith that so many enjoy at Highlands. Whether you are new to the church and the Christian faith or whether you have been active in the life of the community for generations, whether you are confident and sure, or uncertain and questioning, I hope you find something in the life represented here to move you along in your life and faith. There are opportunities for faith development for people of all ages. There are ways to gather, learn, grow and express the joy of music for every age and stage of life. There is community and friendship possible for children, youth, adults young and old, and a vibrant seniors ministry. If you long to make a difference in the community and the world, pay attention to the Caring Ministries and the Reaching Out… Building Community sections of the guide. If you are looking for a community of worship or are wanting to mark a life event like the birth of a child, a wedding or celebrate the life of a loved one, this guide is a good place to start. New this winter in addition to all the regular events and groups will be a Lenten Speaker Series called “Does Anything Go?” Come explore key issues in contemporary life, ethics and faith. Also, you will find “Christianity 101: A Starter Kit,” a four evening core course and discussion series. You will notice as we begin the season of Lent in late February that we are messing with dates for our Pancake dinner and Ash Wednesday service. The Drawdown education and inspiration events are in full swing. We hope to ignite some interest in workshops in Social Media with Andria Irwin, and finally we will be holding a workshop on the ancient spiritual tool, the Enneagram, led by Allison Rennie. To find out more, please check out the website www.highlandunited.org, find us on Facebook, send us an email, or call the church office at 604-980 -6071. 2020 Winter/Spring Program Guide Page 11 English Language Learning North Vancouver has become a vibrant multicultural community including many for whom English is a second (or third or fourth) language. This program at Highlands offers an opportunity for students to practise their English in an informal setting, meet new people, learn about life in Canada, share stories and have conversations about spiritual matters. Interested in Social Media Workshops? We are gauging the interest in a series of workshops on Social Media practices. This could include security and fraud protection, general usage and how-tos, or trouble-shooting sessions. Email Andria.irwin@highlandsunited.org if you would be interested in participating with what your specific interests are and dates will be announced through the Spring. A dedicated team of fifteen teachers/leaders take turns facilitating the classes. Teachers and senior students work as a team to support these newcomers to Canada. The class groups meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 am to noon with the first hour focused on general conversation and the last hour spent with conversation of a more spiritual nature. We now have both a Beginners class and Conversation 2 class, with total enrollment of 45 students. A Speakers Group meets on Thursdays from 12:30 - 1:30 pm for the more advanced students. New this year is our Conversation & Coffee group for people who are comfortable talking in English and just want a place to meet up for English conversation facilitated by an English speaking volunteer. This group meets Thursdays 10:00 am to noon. The Winter term is January to March and the Spring term runs April to the beginning of June.
