Tall Grass Arts Association is pleased to honor
Jean Lewis
at its 2022 Beaux Arts Ball
Jean Lewis is a lifelong resident of the southern suburbs. She received
her B.S. in Art Education from Northern Illinois University and her
M.A. from Governors State University. Her love of art took her into
teaching in the south suburbs for over 30 years.
Upon retiring, Jean’s focus turned to creating her own art. She began
by attending Sunday Life Drawing sessions and pastel workshops
taught by Marikay Peter Witlock. Pastels would soon become her
medium of choice. She was juried into Tall Grass Arts Association
in Park Forest and became a Guild Artist at Union Street Gallery in
Chicago Heights.
Jean has been exhibiting since 2011. She began locally with Tall Grass
and Union Street. Chicago venues would follow with the museum of
Science and Industry’s Black Creativity exhibits included. She won the
Best of Drawing Awards in 2012 & 2013. She began to submit and show
her work from Cape Cod, MA to Laguna Beach, CA, with many points
in between. This exposure led to awards such as an Outstanding Pastel
Award in the April 2020 Bold Brush Online Painting Competition, an
Honorable Mention in a Rhode Island Watercolor Society exhibit, the
Museum Choice Award in Duluth, GA and a merit award in the 8th
Biennial Show for the Chicago Pastel Painters.
In recent years, Jean’s focus has been on portrait & figurative pastel
paintings of people from African countries such as Mali and Kenya.
Jean’s studio is on the 3rd floor of the Union Street Gallery in Chicago
Heights. Her website is Jeanlewisfineart.com.
Jean quotes Kehinde Wiley in talking about their mutual love of
portraits, “Portraits are about revealing aspects of an individual.”

Tall Grass Arts Association is pleased to honor
Terry Karpowicz
at its 2022 Beaux Arts Ball
Terry Karpowicz was born in 1948 in Cleveland, Ohio and received
a BFA in fine arts from Albion College, Michigan in 1970. Karpowicz
moved to New York City to pursue his career as an artist. In 1972, he
assisted with an installation of sculpture by Mark di Suvero, which
inspired him to pursue sculpture.
In 1973, he enrolled at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana
in the graduate program in Sculpture. After a distinguished graduate
study that included several exhibitions (Frank Logan Medal and a
prize from the Art Institute of Chicago) Karpowicz was awarded
a Fulbright-Hayes Fellowship to the United Kingdom, serving as
a scholar to the Wind and Watermill Section of the Society for the
Protection of Ancient Buildings, to study the technical and mechanical
aspects of the country’s medieval wind and watermills.
Upon completing his fellowship, Karpowicz moved to Chicago, Illinois
in 1976 to establish a sculpture studio and continue his career. Since
then, he has received two National Endowment for the Arts awards,
four grants from the Illinois Arts Council, The Newhouse Award,
and numerous public and private commissions. He has exhibited
throughout the USA, Mexico, Europe and the Soviet Union, and has
received seven commissions for public sculpture from the State of
Illinois. His work is held in collections of the City of Chicago, Oklahoma
City, and the U.S. General Services Administration.
An article in Inland Art Magazine referred to Karpowicz as a “builder.”
It noted that “his sculpture isn’t about contained objects, their action
or value. They’re a record of thinking about them, a hybrid of chance
perceptions, physical constraints and deliberate calculations that
balance rituals of craft and design.”
His latest piece, “Stargazing with Contrails” is located at the
Nathan Manilow Sculpture Park at Governors State University. It
is (according to the article) a “stationary orbital sky-map.” We are
delighted to honor Terry Karpowicz.

“Our warmest congratulations to Jean Lewis and Terry Krpowicz on being
recognized by the Tall Grass Arts Association at its annual Beaux Arts Ball. Both
Jean and Terry are artists with national recognition. Tall Grass is honored to be
able to have them with us and to recognize them.
Jean is a pastel artist whose artworks of people are exceptionally expressive. At
the Park Forest Art Fair, last year, she won the ‘Peoples’ Choice Award.’ She has
been juried into art exhibits from coast to coast.
Terry is a sculptor who creates large, outdoor sculptures. One of his pieces,
Art Ark, can be seen in the entry to Governors State University and, the latest
addition to the collection in the Nathan Manilow Sculpture Park, ‘Stargazing
with Contrails,’ enjoys very prominent placement in the park, just across the
pond and visible from the University.
Both of these artists have contributed greatly to the culture and quality of the
southern suburbs. Their contributions increase the value of our homes, our
communities and our lives. The arts nourish our souls. Jean and Terry have
enriched the entire Chicagoland region by their commitment to the arts.”

RED SUMMER takes place during the Chicago race riots of 1919 when the streets ran red with blood.
Two WWI soldiers – one black, one white – return from the battlefields only to find themselves caught
in the violence of Chicago that is struggling to accommodate the Great Migration, the return of
veterans, a downturn in the economy, and long-standing ethnic tensions. Having fought on the same
side in The Great War, they are now pitted against each other as their friends, family, and neighbors
wage block-by-block warfare and the city’s ethnic enclaves rage and burn. One hundred years later,
the same issues still simmer and smolder in every metropolitan area in the country.

A “Call for Entries” Exhibit featuring works that exist as
