Honoring Veterans Year-Round Nominate a Veteran Who is eligible? The nominee must reside in Clayton County and must have received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Military. Clayton County employees are welcome to be nominated. There is no age requirement to be nominated. What are the requirements? Honorees will be recognized for significant public service contributions made at the local, state or national level and by excellence achieved through action above and beyond the call of duty. The Clayton Senior Adult Program has a wide array of classes, special events and trips for their program participants. Information and Referral is the gateway to community resources in Clayton County. The Information and Referral Specialist is the first point of contact for potential clients. The Specialist refers callers to services both within and outside of Clayton County while responding to direct requests from individuals. Our specialists also assess the individual's long and short-term needs, identifying resources to meet those needs, providing a referral to identified resources and, when appropriate, following up to ensure the individual's needs have been met. The Aging Program Senior spotlight Ms. Jinx Ratcliffe By Sharonda Hill, Aging Program Case Manager A fter graduating from Marquette University, Ms. Ratcliffe moved to Georgia from Evanston, Illinois. She took on a new sales territory, making her the Southeastern Regional Manager for the Kathryn Beich Candy Company. Kathryn Beich was one of the top selling fundraising companies in the United States at the time. However, Ms. Ratcliffe’s career changed when Nestle bought the Beich Company. One evening, Ms. Ratcliffe was involved in a home invasion which left her blind. However, she has not allowed her disability to defeat her. Ms. Ratcliffe’s hobbies include hand sewing and quilting. She is a mother of three daughters and has three granddaughters, two great granddaughters and one great grandson. In October 2017, Ms. Ratcliffe experienced a hypoglycemic episode. The paramedics referred her to the Aging Program for her to participate in the Meals on Wheels Program. Receiving the Meals on Wheels has been very beneficial. Ms. Ratcliffe is impressed with the variety of the meals; she feels that most of them are gourmet lunches. Her favorite driver, LeAndre Gandy, is very helpful as well. He reads the package label to her, tells her what is included in the meal, gives further insight on how it tastes and offers reheating suggestions. He also assists her with additional tasks like taking out the trash. Since being in the Meals on Wheels Program, Ms. Ratcliffe has been able to manage her diabetes much better. She is very thankful to be able to receive services through the Aging Program. Winter/Spring 2019 9
We Are #claytonstrong Every year the Clayton County Fire and Emergency Services Department delivers meals to homebound seniors. C layton Strong is much more than a social media hashtag — it represents the commitment all Clayton County departments have to help one another, and Clayton County Fire and Emergency Services Department (CCFES) is no exception. Every November, CCFES participates in Aging’s Holiday Food Drive by collecting hen and turkey donations for Thanksgiving. Four months later, CCFES delivers meals to homebound seniors during March for Meals. Fire Chief/EMA Director Landry Merkison said 3,321 that March for Meals and the Holiday Food Drive meals delivered during March for are ways for CCFES to serve the senior community. Meals in March 2018 “For us, it’s a big part of why we’re here. Seeing CCFES employees on their doorstep with food comes as a welcome surprise to seniors. “They’re [the seniors] are always shocked and surprised to see their local safety people show up,” Chief Merkison said. “It’s always good to see that reaction.” Meeting the people they serve in a non-emergency capacity comes as a respite for CCFES employees. “They see a lot of things that the average person doesn’t see in their lifetime,” Chief Merkison said, “and that can build up on you. So, we take some time away from that to do something as simple of a service as delivering a meal to somebody. But to sit down and have that interaction with someone that’s not related to an emergency is kind of a break away from things. It gives you a different perspective on your service. It’s like, ‘Okay, now I see the impact of what we do and how much they appreciate it.’ It’s kind of a win-win.” Winter/Spring 2019 11
Happy 114th Birthday, Ms. Maggie Kidd! Ms. Maggie Brown Kidd was born on December 8, 1904 and is a resident of Riverdale where she lives with her daughter and son-in-law. The Supercentenarian's County Commissioner Gail Hambrick and Clayton County Aging staff have developed a special bond with Ms. Maggie and her family over the years. The Aging Advisory Board generously gifted Ms. Maggie a hospital bed as a birthday present two years ago. On her 112th birthday, Ms. Maggie was honored with the dedication of an arts and crafts room at Frank Bailey Senior Center. Ms. Maggie holds the blessed distinctions of being the oldest living Clayton County resident, the oldest living Georgian and the oldest living African- American residing in the United States. 12 Clayton Forever Young
March for Meals is a national month-long campaign held in March, initiated and sponsored by the Meals On Wheels Association of America to raise awareness of senior hunger and isolation. Hundreds of Senior Nutrition Programs across the United States, like Clayton County’s Meals On Wheels (MOW) Program, promote March for Meals through public events, partnerships with local businesses, volunteer recruitment and fundraising initiatives. Clayton County’s MOW Program receives support annually from the Board of Commissioners, Clayton County public safety agencies and various community partners in helping to bring about a greater awareness of this health and wellness program for seniors. i #marchformeals 13 Clayton Forever Young

This program is the model program for the state of Georgia, and Clayton County Senior Services is proud to have it! Kinship Care has been awarded honors statewide by Georgia Recreation and Parks Association for outstanding youth program, nationally by the National Association of Counties as a Program of Excellence and internationally as a Program of Distinction by Generations United. But all the recognition and accolades in the world do not compare to the reward of seeing families grow closer and stronger! Staff Kinship Care spotlight Omar France After-School Program Aide I was born in Allegany, Maryland as the youngest of three. At age six, my family moved from Maryland to Georgia, where we have been ever since. I attended Elite Scholars Academy and became a part of their first graduating class. I am a recent graduate from The University of Georgia. I received my Bachelor of Arts in English, making me the first college graduate in my family. During my time there, I became extremely engaged in the UGA community. I served as a member of The Arch Society, an organization that functions as the official goodwill host and ambassadors for the University. I served on a variety of executive boards that primarily focused on bridging the gap between UGA students and the Athens-Clarke community through volunteer activities. I worked as a resident assistant throughout my college career, becoming a resource for freshman and first-generation students. Because of my student involvement, I was selected as a nominee and member of the Homecoming Court. If you were to ask me about my experience at UGA, I’d tell you that it was filled with lifelong friends, unforgettable moments and a true discovery of my passion for helping others. Currently, I work as an after-school program aide for Kinship Care Resource Center. I recently took a group of high- schoolers to my alma mater, hoping to ignite in them a passion for higher education. Outside of work, I’d define myself as a true scholar. You can usually catch me highlighting or taking notes from the pile of books next to my desk. I also enjoy being stacked high in sugar, trying out new recipes in the kitchen. If you can’t catch me in a book or in the kitchen, you’ll find me spending time with my many dogs. I also consider myself a humble servant. I love helping people and strive to bring a little bit of joy to each person’s day. I believe that a smile and high five can make a world of difference when someone is having their worst day. I strive to accomplish this goal, as I continue working in more helping professions and traveling to impoverished communities to be an agent of change. Kinship Quilters Honoring Veterans with Quilts of Valor T he Kinship Quilters and the Tara Quilt Guild made quilts to present to Clayton County veterans through the Quilts of Valor Foundation. Quilts of Valor Foundation awards quilts handmade by volunteers to veterans as a way of thanking them for their service. The quilts made by the Kinship Quilters and the Tara Quilt Guild were awarded to veterans in a special ceremony held on November 10, 2018 at the Georgia Archives in Morrow, Georgia. Staff Frank Bailey spotlight Aswad Abdul-Ghaffar Program Aide 1. What are some of your job responsibilities? Plan, develop and implement programs, classes, special events and activities and assist with themed decoration of Frank Bailey Senior Center for holidays and recognition events. 2. How long have you been working for Senior Services? 3 months 3. Why did you decide to do the work you are doing now? I enjoy working with the senior population because they are wise and nice to work with at the center. 4. What do you like most about your job? Providing classes and programs that the seniors enjoy. 5. What is something that most people do not know about you? I am an exercise physiologist by training. 6. Describe yourself in three words. Honest, trustworthy and loving. 7. Where did you grow up, and what is one thing that makes that place special? Atlanta native that loves the culture of the city. 8. Who was your role model growing up and why? My mother is my ultimate role model due to her loving and caring spirit. 9. Where is your favorite place to vacation and why? An American HERO Mr. Jack Lucas, a Korean War veteran, is Clayton County's first Veteran of the Month recipient. By Program Coordinator Adah Silver Above: Mr. Jack and the North Clayton High School JROTC sing "America the Beautiful" during the Frank Bailey Veterans Day Program. M r. James (Jack) Lucas was born on January at 12:36 p.m. in Wonsan, Korea the ship hit a mine 16, 1933 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and went down. The USS Pirate/AM275 had also been where he and his five siblings were reared sunk at 12:07 p.m. Apart from Pearl Harbor, this was by the late Mr. James Arthur Lucas Sr. and Mrs. Lula the largest naval tragedy with two ships sunk less than Smith Lucas. Jack has one surviving sister, Mildred 30 minutes apart. Lucas Patterson, who still resides in a suburb of Mr. Jack received five battle stars, one Silver Star and Winston-Salem, North Carolina. a Presidential Unit Citation for the USS Pledge/AM277 Mr. Jack decided to join the Navy when he was and its members. Jack was promoted by Admiral C. 16. Although he was allowed to sign up, he was not Turner Joy, Commander of the 7 Fleet Pacific, from allowed to officially join until January 16, 1950 on his Seaman First Class to Coxswain. Jack served in the 17th birthday. He served aboard the USS Pledge/ Navy until 1953. He received his Associates Degree AM277 from March 1950 until October 12, 1950, when in applied science from the University of Tokyo while 26 Clayton Forever Young

Top right and middle right: Mr. Jack was only 17-years-old when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, making him the youngest sailor aboard the USS Pledge/AM277. he was enlisted in the Navy and a Bachelor’s Degree in Mr. Jack and his wife Mrs. Clara moved to Georgia management from Wayne State. and joined Frank Bailey Senior Center in 2008. Sadly, Upon his discharge from the Navy, Mr. Jack moved Mrs. Clara died in 2014. After his wife's death, Mr. to Detroit, Michigan and became a police officer from Jack became an active advocate for Veterans Helping 1953 until 1957. Leaving Detroit, Mr. Jack moved to Veterans (formerly BEHAVE) while continuing his Cleveland and served as a police officer until 1961. In work as a Lifetime American Legion Member, Scottish 1962 he enrolled in Southeastern Seminary. Rite Mason. From 1962-1965 Mr. Jack pastored four churches. Mr. Jack was featured in a Home Depot Commercial He also started and operated several businesses such as which honored him as a veteran. Staff J. Charley Griswell spotlight Audrey Hill Administrative Secretary B eing employed with Clayton County for the past five years has awarded me many experiences and memories that are invaluable. I have been fortunate enough to encounter some of the most caring, spirited and loving individuals while working at J. Charley Griswell Senior Center. I started my journey in 2013 as an office assistant. In 2015, I was promoted to administrative secretary. While being employed here, I have gained a second family. I have built relationships with co-workers, seniors of Clayton County and their families throughout my time. The best part about working here is the atmosphere. I am amongst family while working, and there’s no greater feeling than to love what you’re called to do. The Senior Services Department is the hidden gem of Clayton County. We offer so much for the seniors of Clayton County, and that is one of the best parts about my job. I love helping with special events, dances and programs that are held throughout the year. I find myself assisting in different areas of the center just because the passion for what I do is so strong. I pride myself in being a team player and doing whatever it takes to ensure that the center runs smoothly. In addition to my senior family, I have gained an enormous amount of love for my co-workers. We work well together and have the same goal in mind: to help others. We are a close-knit family that looks out for one another, and we know that we can count on each other. Outside of work, I love to travel with family and friends to see new places and explore the world. Other hobbies of mine include reading, cooking and, of course, shopping. Family is very important to me, and I am so thankful to have a loving husband who supports me, wonderful children who make me proud, and perfect little grandchildren who light up my world. I am blessed to wake up every morning to work doing something I love to do, and I am excited about what’s to come in the future. Winter/Spring 2019 37

Features Instant Pot® Recipe: Savory Chicken By Angie Burda, Kinship Care Resource Center Manager Total: 1 hr 20 min Active: 25 min Yield: 4 servings Level: Easy Ingredients • 4 chicken legs, thighs and drumsticks separated • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil • 1/3 cup soy sauce • 1/4 cup sugar • 1/4 cup white distilled vinegar • 5 cloves garlic, smashed • 2 bay leaves • 1 large yellow onion, sliced • 2 scallions, sliced • Cooked rice for serving directions Special equipment: an Instant Pot® multi-cooker Season the chicken legs generously with salt and pepper. Turn the Instant Pot® to the high sauté setting. Add the oil, and once it's shimmering (but not smoking), add half the chicken pieces and brown on both sides, about 7 minutes. Remove with tongs to a plate and brown the remaining chicken pieces. Return all the chicken to the multi-cooker and add the soy sauce, sugar, vinegar, garlic, bay leaves, onion and 1/2 teaspoon pepper. Follow the manufacturer's guide for locking the lid and preparing to cook. Set to pressure cook, on high, for 8 minutes. After the pressure cook cycle is complete, follow the manufacturer's guide for quick release and wait until the quick release cycle is complete. Be careful of any remaining steam as you unlock and remove the lid and turn the Instant Pot® back to the high sauté setting. Let the sauce come to a boil and reduce it until dark brown and very fragrant, about 20 minutes. Remove the bay leaves.
