CONVERSATIONS Bullying – it has to stop right away OPINION: Bullying of their own staff is rife throughout the police, victims say. A decade ago a Commission of Inquiry into Police Conduct, led by Dame Margaret Bazley, recommended wide changes to the police organisational culture. But the culture hasn’t changed enough, with bullying being described by victims throughout the organisation in various regions. What’s described is nasty, sexist and designed to mentally abuse people. Victims say the bullying culture is lead by senior staff members who deliberately make life difficult for those ranked beneath them. Surely this is unacceptable. And if police can’t even treat their own staff with dignity and fairness, how can we trust them to treat the rest of us, including minority groups in the community, fairly.
