Introducing the MHI
fish health team
Over the past three years, MHI has been
building a fish health management team
with the recruitment of a dedicated fish
veterinarian and a number of biologists

In 2015, Sandra Schlittenhardt joined MHI having just
completed her Master’s degree in Aquatic Veterinary
Studies at the University of Stirling, Scotland. Sandra
gained her Veterinary Medicine degree from Giessen
University, Germany in 2011 and is now responsible for fish
management health in MHI.

Will Hurley joined MHI in May 2016 and first began working
in MHI’s south western sites before moving to Donegal in
November 2017. Will is from Enniskean, Co Cork and holds
a degree in Marine Science from National University of
Ireland, Galway (NUIG). Will supports fish health surveillance

2017, she has managed the cleaner fish stocking
programme for MHI. Amber has fish farming in her blood –
her grandfather, John Irwin, was one of the original farming
pioneers in Connemara.

Ellen Hanly is the most recent recruit to the fish health
team. Ellen is a native of Kilkenny and holds a Master’s
degree in Marine Biology from University College Cork and
worked as a research assistant at NUIG’s Carna Research

will be responsible for fish health surveillance in the Mayo
marine sites.

Finally, Fanad native, Seán Begley, has responsibility for all
marine stock data collection and analysis, which is a vital
component of fish health surveillance. Seán has worked in
MHI for over 29 years in a variety of marine-related roles.

Eating fish makes children smarter
A recent study found that eating fish improves cognitive ability in children
A study carried out by researchers at the University of Philadelphia’s medical school in
the US found that frequent fish intake was associated with fewer sleep problems and
higher IQ scores.
In this study, 541 Chinese schoolchildren were followed, with sleeping quality assessed
from the ages of 9-11 years and IQ scores at the age of 12. A dose-response
relationship indicated higher IQ scores in children eating fish 2-3 times per month or
more often compared to children eating fish less than 2 times per month or not eating
fish at all.

Big School Cook Off
For the second consecutive year, Scoil Mhuire Milford, Co Donegal along with the Abbey
Vocational School in Donegal town, represented the county in the regional finals of the ‘Big
School Cook Off’ on Tuesday, January 23rd at St Mary’s College, Derry. Tommy Walls and Oisín
Riney cooked up their dish, Irish organic salmon with Ballyholey Farm season vegetables, for
the judges.

The two boys have been busy practicing with their cookery teacher, Elaine Nelis, since the
New Year and both MHI and Scoil Mhuire Milford are very proud of their achievements to date.

The Irish News has teamed up with food-service firm, Mount Charles, to launch this new
competition for budding chefs in post-primary schools. Supported by ‘Business in the
Community’, the initiative encourages pupils between Year 8 or 1st Year and Year 10 or 3rd
Year, living in Northern Ireland and Co Donegal, to become interested in healthy cooking and
creative dishes.

Shortlisted teams will take part in county heats against other schools where the teams will be
given the same ingredients and recipe to follow. The winners from each will go forward to cook
their original recipe submission at a final in June. Tommy Walls and Oisín Riney
