The Big Half, London Marathon Here are Philippa, Linsey and Jenny, who all ran the Big Half Marathon to raise funds for Headway Hertfordshire. Phillipa said “The event was great! Really exciting to be part of such a big race - I think around 12,500 people. I thoroughly enjoyed it, although did get a bit carried away at the start running too fast so paid the price for that in the final few miles! Unfortunately didn’t see Mo or the course breaking run from Eilish McColgan.” Thank you all for your amazing endeavors ladies. Total raised was £1700…wow! Sidley London Revolution Ultimate 2 day Cycle The Sidley London Revolution Event took place on 1st and 2nd of October 2022. It is a 56.9 mile loop, which starts in London and quickly heads out to the beautiful surrounding countryside. Peet Rudolph has been a client of Headway Hertfordshire and along with his friend Craig and raised an incredible £1500. This event is set across two days (88.4 miles one day and then 68.5 miles on the second day. This includes camping overnight at Base Camp. How much did Santa pay for his sleigh? Nothing, it was on the house!
Fond Farewell It is with great sadness that we said goodbye to a much-loved client, Derek Tombs. Derek regularly attended the Welwyn peer support group with his wife Gladys. Derek was well known for his love of a cup of tea and when he came to the group, would always make sure he had his cup of tea, together with either a biscuit or cake (sometimes both) before he did anything else! Headway Hertfordshire would also like to say thank you to Gladys, the family, and all friends for their gift of donations that have been sent, instead of receiving flowers at their funerals….Thank you again I remember Coronation Day! On the day of the Queen’s Coronation, each street in our village entered all the girls names into a draw, the winner was crowned Queen for the day. I was one of the attendants. There was a street party, and then everyone crowded into a house that had a television to watch the Coronation. The children all sat on the carpet while the adults stood shoulder to shoulder and filled the room. Each family had to pay a penny for the privilege. Carol Spiers (2nd from right) And next year we will have the coronation of Charles III on: Saturday 6 May 2023 With an extra bank holiday on: Monday 8 May 2023 Will you be watching? What is Santa's dog’s name? Santa Paws!
Three Peak’s Challenge Adam Jones, husband and carer to a Headway client, along with five work colleagues raised £3700 by climbing 3 peaks, all in 24hrs. An amazing achievement for you all! Sept 6th 2022 AGM Yet again the AGM proved to be a wonderful social event once business matters were over. The Fruit Hamper Raffle was won by Linda from Stevenage, and a big thank you to Mick for the karaoke and our amazing band of volunteers for the lunch and refreshments. Headway Hertfordshire and Earthworks have worked together to benefit our clients, see below for full details. Growing Together at Earthworks Earthworks St Albans’ Growing Together project connects people with low-level support needs in their 3.5-acres of eco-gardens: working, learning and growing together through social and therapeutic horticulture. The project offers gardening and nature-based activities for people who do not have local authority funding for community opportunities, aiming to fill the identified gap in provision. Two individuals from Headway Herts have joined Growing Together as Gardeners and have immersed themselves in a variety of gardening and craft activities, focussed primarily in the Re-Circled, Sensory, Beach and Patio gardens. Ornamental and creative gardening has quickly become a firm favourite in the accessible gardens and you can see on site all sorts of reclaimed items that have been beautifully painted and/or planted with great care. A very popular activity is using our old-fashioned water pump to draw up water from the rainwater storage tank under the patio to fill watering cans. The Gardeners have also engaged in woodwork activities such as sawing wooden branches into discs to make interactive crafts for the Sensory garden and measuring and sawing planks of wood into triangles to be painted and made into wooden bunting. Project coordinator Michele Seymour says “Our Growing Together Gardeners have quickly become very invested in our lovely site and it is wonderful to see them take great pride in maintaining and enhancing it alongside our Earthworkers, staff and volunteers. They have fitted in very well with the Wednesday team and are very much a part of the Earthworks family. Our Earthworkers love to meet and welcome new people.” Growing Together runs on Wednesdays 10am – 2:30pm year-round and is heavily subsidised by grant funding, with Gardeners contributing £5 per session. Gardeners may have a mild learning disability, learning difficulty, autism, acquired brain injury or other needs. There are currently spaces on the project. If you or someone you know might be interested in joining this group, please contact Bianca on 01727 847311 or earthworks@earthworksstalbans.co.uk for more information.
