Thank you for your interest in the role of Head of Elite Sport and Events.
I am delighted that you are interested in working with GLL and our partners in
Manchester.
This is a newly created role where you will have the opportunity to lead on our elite
sporting agenda and promotion of our event venues.
Sport is at the heart of the city of Manchester. Manchester City Council is embarking on
one of the largest public leisure investments anywhere in the UK over the coming years.
Working closely in partnership with MCRactive and many of sports governing bodies,
you can help shape this investment package that will rival any city’s sporting and leisure
offer.
Manchester itself is one of the most attractive cities in the UK. There’s a quality of life
here to rival that of any global city making it an ideal place to live and work.

GLL IN MANCHESTER
GLL is a charitable social enterprise that works in partnership with MCRactive to operate
and run Manchester City Council’s leisure centres. We do so under the MCRactive brand.
MCRactive are a not for profit organisation established and overseen by Manchester
City Council, responsible for driving sport and physical activity across Manchester.
With over 25 years experience operating over 250 leisure facilities, GLL are the UK’s
leading leisure trust. We operate national sporting venues including London Aquatics
Centre, Copperbox Arena, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and very soon Lee Valley
Athletics Centre, Lee Valley VeloPark and Lee Valley White Water Centre, the latter both
key venues for the 2012 Olympics.
As a not for profit organisation, we reinvest all profits back into the community by
developing staff, investing in leisure centres, supporting young athletes and increasing
participation in sport for young and old. Our aim is simple. We want to get ‘more
people, more active, more often’.
Sport is at the heart of the city of Manchester. The iconic venues of the 2002
Commonwealth Games which we’re proud to manage, provide a lasting legacy and a
stunning environment for Mancunians to enjoy their leisure time in, with each and every
one of these facilities accessible to the community.
Eight of our venues deliver regional, national and international sport – HSBC UK
National Cycling Centre, National Squash Centre and Regional Arena, Manchester
Tennis and Football Centre, National Basketball Performance Centre, National Speedway
Stadium, Manchester Aquatics Centre, and Manchester Regional Gymnastics Centre.
They sit alongside a portfolio of twelve extremely high quality community leisure
facilities, all of which have received significant investment.

Manchester truly is a world class city of sport!
Manchester City Council has invested significantly in its leisure estate and is embarking
on further ventures in one of the largest public leisure investments anywhere in the UK
over the coming years
Since 2014 three brand new centres have opened across the city – East Manchester
Leisure Centre, Hough End Leisure Centre and Arcadia Library & Leisure Centre. Moss
Side Leisure Centre and Hulme High Street Library were also completely refurbished in
2018. Work is due to begin this year on the brand new Abraham Moss Leisure Centre
in Crumpsall.
ABOUT
On 1st April 2019 MCRactive was created. MCRactive are a not for profit organisation
established and overseen by Manchester City Council, responsible for driving sport and
physical activity across Manchester, inspiring and encouraging everyone to lead a more
active and healthier lifestyle.
Their role is to provide the leadership and a common narrative, working with the whole
sport and physical activity sector to activate all publically accessible sport and leisure
places that exist across the city.

We work with a huge range of stakeholders across Manchester, Greater Manchester and
nationally. This includes national governing bodies, elite squads and strategic partners.
You’ll play a key role in building and maintaining our already excellent relationships with
these key stakeholders plus explore new opportunities for working with other strategic
partners as we continue to grow elite sport and events across the City.
We serve a number of key governing bodies of sport including, England Squash,
Basketball England, England Lacrosse, British Cycling, British Taekwondo, GB Taekwondo,
England Netball, British Swimming, GB Para Swimming, and England Athletics.
THE MANCHESTER SPORTING AND VENUE INVESTMENT
GLL began operating nine leisure centres on behalf of Manchester City Council in
October 2014. In 2018 this increased to twenty, with our partnership due to continue
until 2028 with an option for a further five years beyond that.
During this time we’ve supported Manchester City Council to deliver their significant
investment programme across the city. This has included opening brand new leisure
centres and the continued investment to the product offer across other facilities in the
portfolio from health and fitness provision to outdoor pitches and soft play.
Despite the current pandemic the future is extremely bright in Manchester, with further
plans to invest significantly in leisure and sporting provision continuing to gather pace.
A flavour of the projects delivered across the City since 2018 include:

1 1THE ROLE - HEAD OF ELITE SPORT AND EVENTS SALARY RANGE: £43,777 to £47,893 Based on the Etihad campus you will be in the heart of this sporting city. This is a new role, where you will be working in partnership with MCRactive and our key stakeholders to deliver GLL’s key objectives, which are to increase participation in sport; deliver in- dustry leading programmes; deliver the commercial elements set out in the contractual commitments; and host world class events in Manchester. Working as part of the Manchester Leadership Team, you will be the strategic lead for GLL on all things sport.
