T H E 2008 Beijing Olympics B E I J The Beijing Olympics I N G China’s History spans many thousands of years. The staging of the 2008 Olympic Games heralds a fundamental global transition as China takes its place in the new world. O This is a moment in history you can be a part of. L Y M P I C S The Olympic Games will be China’s greatest ever international event. Beijing is already starting to radiate the excitement that comes with staging an event of this magnitude and significance. The organizers of the Olympic Games Cultural Festival of the Beijing Olympic Games recognize that the public entertainment program is a key expression of this excitement in the immediate countdown to the Olympic Games! The Sydney 2000 Olympic performance experience indicates that performing in the pre - Olympic countdown period is the ideal time to contribute to the Olympic excitement. Appropriate venues are available Airlines and hotels are not yet charging an Olympic premium Cities are comfortable to move around in Audiences are abundant The Beijing Olympics commence on 8 August. The Perform In Harmony – With Olympic Spirit countdown performance programs operate during the 2008 Spring break. This is your invitation to contribute to this excitement as America salutes the XXIX Olympic Games. 3
S A 2008 Beijing Olympics L U T E Choral Salute to the Olympic Games T O T The Festival. This is a choral Festival that honors excellence in choral music and salutes H the forthcoming Olympic Games—an event that creates bridges between Chinese and E American music as well as between singers and audiences. The outcomes are as follows: • an authentic immersion into Chinese culture and society; O • an educational exchange between American and Chinese citizens; L • an intriguing exploration of music representing Eastern and Western traditions; and Y • an inspiring experience in choral artistry through individual and massed performances. M P I C The Leader. Rollo A. Dilworth is Associate Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities and Music Education at the G North Park University School of Music in Chicago, Illinois. He A received his Doctor of Music degree in conducting performance M at Northwestern University where he studied conducting and E composition with Robert A. Harris. Dilworth's choral S compositions are a part of the Henry Leck Creating Artistry Choral Series with Hal Leonard Corporation and Colla Voce Music Company. He has recently published pieces with the Santa Barbara Music Publishing Company as part of the Mary Alice Stollak Choral Series. Dilworth is a contributing author for the Essential Elements for Choir and the Experiencing Choral Music textbook series, both published by the Hal Leonard Corporation/Glencoe/McGraw-Hill Publications, and for Music Express! Teachers Magazine. An active conductor, composer, educator, and clinician, Dilworth has taught choral music at the elementary, secondary, and university levels. He is a member of the Music Educators National Conference, the National Association of Negro Musicians, the American Choral Directors Association and Chorus America. He currently serves on the ACDA Central Division Board of Directors as the Repertoire and Standards Chair for Multicultural and Ethnic music. 4
S 2008 Beijing Olympics A L U T E The vision. I was delighted to be invited to lead this wondrous musical adventure to China for several reasons. T O 2008 is the year that Beijing stages the Olympic Games. This will be a defining moment for China as it ascends in people's consciousness this century. T H We will have a chance to savour this moment and to add to it by staging our Choral Salute E To The Olympic Games. We will perform the Salute in Beijing in the Olympic countdown program: “Perform In Harmony – With Olympic Spirit.” We will also perform in Shanghai, O Asia’s most dynamic city. L Y Individual choir performances will culminate in a number of massed works including the M one I am planning to write to premiere with you at this salute. This new choral work will P incorporate great American and Chinese musical traditions. I C As you can tell I am excited to be a part of this and hope you are too! Rollo Dilworth G Performances. S H A 2008 Beijing Olympics N G H A I The Itineraries / PROGRAM ONE SHANGHAI - BEIJING B E DAY ONE: Friday, March 21 I USA/CHINA: Depart USA on Flight to China J I We begin our adventure in travel, as we board the giant jet for our flight over the Pacific. N We follow the sun as we fly to the Orient. G DAY TWO: Saturday, March 22 SHANGHAI: Arrive Shanghai (B/L/D) We are greeted by the friendly Kingsway International representatives upon arrival in Shanghai, China’s second largest and most cosmopolitan city. We immediately notice the amazing skyscrapers, which tower as far as the eye can see. Futuristic buildings dominate the skyline, particularly in the recently transformed area known as the Pudong. So many new buildings have interesting designs and we learn that the city now boasts one of the fastest rail lines in the world, connecting the center with the huge, modern airport. We travel along the old European-styled buildings fronting the Bund, the tree-lined avenue bordering the Huangpu River. Overnight in Shanghai. DAY THREE: Sunday, March 23 SHANGHAI: Rehearsal and Welcome dinner (B/L/D) After our buffet breakfast we enjoy a half day sightseeing tour of this fascinating city, especially the breathtaking city of the future in Pudong. We join together in the afternoon for a rehearsal of the massed choral works under the direction of Rollo Dilworth. Also, each individual ensemble has a chance to perform a welcome song for all our fellow choirs before the Festival Shanghai welcome dinner. 8
S H A 2008 Beijing Olympics N G H A I DAY FOUR: Monday, March 24 SHANGHAI: Sightseeing, Exchange concert (B/L/D) / Following breakfast this morning we enjoy a visit B to the famous "Old Town", after which there is E some time for shopping and taking pictures of I the fashionable stores along the Nanjing Road. J We arrive at the massed rehearsal venue and I prepare for an exchange opportunity with the N Chinese choirs prior to our concert. G Overnight in Shanghai. DAY FIVE: Tuesday, March 25 SHANGHAI/BEIJING: Arrive Beijing, Orientation Tour (B/L/D) We travel to the airport and fly to Beijing, China’s capital for 3000 years. Home to over 13 million people, Beijing is China's third largest city and the heart of the nation's government, economy, and culture. The increasing excitement of the forthcoming Olympics can be felt all over the city. 2008 will be remembered as the year that China took its place in the modern world. We will all be affected by being a part of this moment in history. We’re entranced by our first look at this magnificent city, as our singers and entourage travel to our hotel for our first evening of this grand adventure. Overnight in Beijing. DAY SIX: Wednesday, March 26 BEIJING: Great Wall, Beijing Opera (B/L/D) Today we visit the Great Wall—one of the highlights of our tour. We learn of its construction 2000 years ago, and examine first-hand one of the most scenic portions of its 3700-mile length. This evening we attend the Beijing Opera to complete our full experience of traditional Beijing. Overnight in Beijing. 9
S H A 2008 Beijing Olympics N G H A DAY SEVEN: Thursday, March 27 I BEIJING: Visit Tian Anmen Square, Forbidden City, Rehearsal and Concerts (B/L/D) / Today we visit the world’s largest plaza, Tian Anmen Square, covering over 100 acres. This square is lined with monumental public buildings, B fronting the legendary and once Forbidden E City. 250 acres of splendid 15th century I halls and pavilions graced with imperial J treasures now comprise the Palace Museum I that is the Forbidden City. We follow where N millions of people have walked before us as G we visit the remarkable complex of exquisite buildings and squares. For almost 500 years ordinary citizens could not enter this vast courtyard – hence the name Forbidden City. We meet up with the rest of the festival singers and have our first massed rehearsal under the inspiring guidance of Rollo Dilworth. This is followed by individual concerts – a chance for each choir to hear the others and to share with Chinese audiences. Overnight in Beijing. DAY EIGHT: Friday, March 28 BEIJING: Exploration of Beijing; and Temple of Heaven, Rehearsal (B/L/D) After breakfast we travel to the Temple of Heaven, one of the most photographed buildings in the world. Built in 1420 and restored in 1890, the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests is one of the several amazing traditional structures that we see. As we travel through the city our guides also show us many of the Olympic related facilities that have been constructed for the 2008 Games. In the afternoon, we have our second massed rehearsal and in the evening there may be the opportunity for further individual concerts. Overnight in Beijing 10
2008 Beijing Olympics DAY NINE: Saturday, March 29 BEIJING: Joint Concert (B/L/D) We have a little free time this morning for exploring or shopping. We join together for a S sound check and final preparations for our massed concert. Each choir has an opportunity H to shine and then all amass for the joint repertoire under the direction of Rollo Dilworth. A After the massed concert we celebrate with our end-of-tour banquet. Overnight in N Beijing. G H A I DAY TEN: Sunday, March 30 / BEIJING/USA: Depart Beijing B Today we leave on an afternoon flight with our hearts filled with rich memories of E traditional and futuristic China and the joy of having represented America abroad at a I time of profound transition for the Chinese people. A N G H DAY SEVEN: Sunday, March 30 A BEIJING/SHANGHAI: Free morning then fly to Shanghai(B/L/D) I This morning we have free time to explore with friends or the option to attend church. DAY EIGHT: Monday, March 31 SHANGHAI: Shanghai sightseeing, Shanghai Acrobats (B/L/D) This morning we visit the famous Yu Garden, a place of peace and comfort in the heart of bustling Shanghai. Dating back to the fabled Ming Dynasty, Yu Garden began as a private garden created by Pan Yunduan, who spent almost 20 years, and all of his savings, to build a garden in order to please his parents in their old age. "Yu" in Chinese means "peace and health". This evening enjoy seeing the world-famous Shanghai Acrobats performance. Overnight in Shanghai. 14
2008 Beijing Olympics B E I J DAY NINE: Tuesday, April 1 I SHANGHAI: Rehearsal and Welcome dinner (B/L/D) N G Following breakfast this morning we enjoy a visit to the famous "Old Town", after which there is some time for shopping and taking pictures of the fashionable stores along the / Nanjing Road. We join together in the afternoon for a rehearsal and then the Shanghai / concert which culminates in the massed pieces under the direction of Rollo Dilworth. At the conclusion we move to enjoy our Shanghai farewell dinner.
