Happy spring from Saint Mary's! A Message from Grandparent Co-Chairs Mary Jane Jenkins and Vicky McKenzie Armes '62C As co-chairs for Saint Mary's grandparents and grandfriends Annual Fund campaign, we are excited to share this edition of our quarterly e-newsletter, which was created especially for grandparents and grandfriends of our Saint Mary's girls. This edition will update you on what's happening at Saint Mary's this quarter, as well as important updates regarding Grandparents & Grandfriends Day 2021. In the past, Saint Mary's has held an in-person event on campus. When the COVID-19 pandemic struck last year, we had to cancel our annual event. This year, with new variants and surges in exposures, Saint Mary's is adhering to strict protocols to keep our granddaughters safe. Following direction from the CDC and local state agencies, this year's Grandparents & Grandfriends Day event will be a virtual event.
Be sure to scroll down for the updates and all the news from campus. Additionally, if you have not yet made your Annual Fund gift to Saint Mary's Grandparent & Grandfriends Campaign, we hope you will join us this year. Click here to donate or pledge. (For those who have already given, THANK YOU!) We also hope you are as excited as we are for the wonderful learning experience our granddaughters receive at Saint Mary's, and we look forward to connecting with you in the near future. School News MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF SCHOOL BRENDAN O'SHEA Time to Celebrate! Dear Members of the Saint Mary’s Community, We've made it to March! That fact, in itself, is reason to celebrate as winter weather slowly begins to fade while sunshine and slightly warmer weather return. It’s amazing how much a couple of days of sunshine have boosted the energy on campus. At Saint Mary’s, we’re also celebrating International Women’s Day (which was Wednesday, March 3) and Women’s History Month, which continues throughout March. During the first week of March, our Connected Saints time was dedicated to learning more about significant women in history who through their grit, perseverance, dedication, and vision established themselves as pioneers in their respective fields. We shared information about women in the following areas: Business and Corporate World Performing and Visual Arts Politics and Government Medicine and Science Sports and Sports Management Education and Technology Women from around the globe were celebrated as advisory groups learned about three or four women in one of the above categories. From Shirley Chisholm to Sandra Day O’Connor, from Ellen Ochoa to Kim Ng, and from Katie Sowers to Fei Fei Li, a range of talents, backgrounds, ethnicities, and nationalities were explored. Don’t know one or more of these names? Take a moment to research them and celebrate these accomplished women in history. There’s a month ahead to learn even more. Go Saints!
Brendan J. O'Shea Head of School CLASS OF 2022 | Pitch Night As part of their seminar programming, Saint Mary's juniors spent this past quarter of the semester working with our community partner, District C, to solve real-world problems for real local businesses. For the last two months, the juniors have worked collaboratively in squads of three to four girls to tackle complex business problems. The experience has required them to build and exercise a number of key competencies, like communications, cross-cultural intelligence, self-directed learning, and new media literacy, to name a few. They have engaged in independent research, regularly interfaced with business professionals, asked critical questions, brainstormed solutions, and challenged themselves to think outside the box. Pitch Night was held on Tuesday, March 8, and was the culmination of their incredible work. This year's community partners include: Copeland Springs Farm and Kitchen, GoKart Kids, Iris Coffee Lab, Jobs for Life, Raleigh Pride, Susie Silver Art, Whole Brain Escapes, and Wiley Elementary PTA. We hope to soon share the videos from the virtual event withyou. Saint Mary’s Chapel celebrates Inspiring Women of Scripture for Women’s History Month Saint Mary’s Chapel program is celebrating Women’s History Month with a series of messages about “Inspiring Women of Scripture,” throughout the month of March. Chaplain Maggie Stoddard introduced the theme in Chapel, Tuesday, March 2, speaking about the importance of lifting up the lesser-known stories of Bible women who taught, led, served, and loved with faith and courage throughout the generations. “These women are our spiritual ancestors, and we honor them by celebrating their stories and discovering, or rediscovering, the Good News that God calls and equips women to the holy change-makers,” says Chaplain Stoddard. Over the next few weeks, Coco Jones ’22, Annie T. Ham ’21, Matilda McCard ’21, Jane Usher ’22, and Sarah Stockton ’22, will each speak about an inspiring woman of the Bible, including Mary and Martha of Bethany; Queen Esther; Deborah; and more.
