SUPERINTENDENT’S CORNER WITH GEORGE CASTO This December the crew has been busy with “tree-work” around the course. We have had one of our crews going around with our extendable pole chainsaw, trimming trees and taking down dead limbs. We have another crew working on the removal of several dead trees. We started down by the tee on #6 where we pulled several dead trees out of Abrams Creek that had been hung up on the banks collecting trash and impeding the ow of water down through the course. We have also taken down many dead Ash trees along the right side of 13, the bottom of the hill on 18 and the woods behind the tennis bubble. A big ‘THANK YOU’ goes out to Mr. Greg Sowers for his skillful backhoe work. We couldn’t have done it without you. George Casto GCSAA HTTPS://WINCHESTERCOUNTRYCLUB.NET/SUPERINTENDENTS-CORNER fl

GENERAL MANAGER Dear Members, Happy New Year!! I hope you were able to stay safe and celebrate the Holidays with loved ones and friends. We certainly were happy to be able to share some of the Holiday spirit with all of you who attended the Santa Brunch and the New Year’s Eve dinner. Spencer once again did an amazing job of decorating the clubhouse and dining rooms for the Holidays. As we continue to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic and most recently the Omicron variant in our everyday lives, please take precautions to keep yourself and those around you safe. We are taking precautions at the club to make sure we are providing a safe environment for our members, guests and sta by adhering to the guidelines provided by the CDC, Virginia Department of Health and Landscapes Golf Management. We ask that if you are not feeling well or have been exposed to someone who has tested positive for COVID that you stay away from the club and follow directions of your primary care givers. The Club’s dining services resume on Friday, January 7th and we encourage you to come out and experience the wonderful cuisine Barbara and her sta are preparing. Take-out orders and family meals are also a great way to support the club and provide quality meals to your family and friends. The City of Winchester is beginning the process of lining the sewer pipes that cross through the golf course primarily on holes 6 and 10 thru 14. The process will include a bypass secondary sewer line that will be exposed above ground running the length of Abrams Creek. The work is scheduled to be completed by the end of March. Congratulations to Craig Gravely, our December FISH! Ambassador of the month. Craig has been part of the golf course maintenance team for the past 8 months. His position doesn’t lend itself to much interaction with members and guests, but his positive, upbeat attitude certainly rubs o on his co-workers. Craig is always there to help others and make their day a little easier. Thank you, Craig for adding to the success of WCC. Wishing all of you and your families nothing but the best in 2022, Happy New Year and stay safe!! See you at the Club, Eri Grindereng, pga c ff ff ff
MEMBERSHIP & MARKETING We wrapped up the first quarter of the new fiscal year with WELCOME high notes in every department. Breakfast with Santa & the O U R N E W E ST New Year’s Eve Dinner were banner events with excellent MEMBERS! turnout and high-grades on the member experience. From a THE ALL membership standpoint, we are ahead of budget with the CLUB S AGER F AMILY December resignation period behind us. We had budgeted a net loss of 22 members through the winter months. With THE membership at nearly 600 members, I estimated ALL S WIATEK CLUB F AMILY approximately 3.5% attrition, well below the industry average of 10%. I am happy to say that as of January 1st, we are at a net -3 memberships, or 19 memberships ahead of T HE TENNIS W ILKINS budget. I am also seeing the leads pipeline fill up earlier than F AMILY expected with several more likely to close in January. I can only assume that this is because of our facilities, golf & tennis programs, and our culture. Lastly, I’d like to say goodbye to George Casto. George has accepted the position of Director of Golf Course Maintenance at Dominion Valley Country Club and will be starting there on January 26th. He leaves us in better shape than we all could have ever hoped for and with a crew that will continue to build on the framework that he has laid down. I will miss George and the knowledge, attitude, and Members are professionalism that he brought to the club every day he was now able to here.
