Settling In So you have arrived on campus and are excited to start your new life at NTU! But before you throw yourself into your classes, projects and exams, first on the list is to settle in to your new home. Here are a few things that will help you to do exactly that: SIM card: Most important on the list is connectivity! Mobile access! To stay in touch with friends and family back home, as well as to stay connected to new friends on campus. You will need a SIM card then. Pre-paid SIM cards are available on campus from any branch of 7-11. There are 3 mobile phone operators in Singapore. These are M1, SingTel and Starhub, and all have pre-paid options. EZ-link card: For International students, this is the first card you'd want to get. It'll make public transport cheaper and easier. Tap the card on boarding and alighting (exiting), both on the bus and MRT. Purchase one at 7-Eleven, SingPost outlets, Passenger Service Centres at MRT stations (Boonlay and Pioneer) or at Boon Lay Bus Interchange in Jurong Point accessible via 199 and 179 bus route. Prepare some loose change for your first trip out from NTU without the card, fare is approximately $1.60 on bus 199 from Hall 11 to Boon Lay and on bus 179 from North Spine to Boon Lay. Daily Necessities: Refer Section “Essential Retail Services” for in-campus supermarkets. Alternatively the nearest mall, Jurong Point is accessible via bus 179/199, you would surely find whatever you need there. Also along the bus 199 route is the Sheng Siong supermarket. Money Changer: Many options are available at Jurong Point Shopping Mall with reasonable rates. Study Rooms and other Activities Learning Hubs The Hive The new learning hub offers one of the world's best learning environments for students of the 21st century. It provides an exciting mix of learning, community and recreational spaces for NTU students, professors and researchers from various disciplines to gather and interact. Student could access the tutorial rooms for discussions, recruiting volunteers, and raising social awareness for projects. The Hive can also host exhibitions, screenings, workshops and seminars to promote community engagement. The Arc The Arc is a six-storey building with 56 smart classrooms located in North Spine. The building has 13 project discussion rooms, a room for quiet reading and a 108-seat lecture theatre. Its two lower levels have rooms that serve as workshops for engineering students. The Arc was designed to create avenues for students to discuss ideas and interact across disciplines. Incorporating curved structures and spiral stairs, The Arc is designed with innovative and eco-friendly features befitting its place as the newest building on the NTU Smart Campus. Instead of walls, it comes with an aluminium sunscreen that reduces solar glare and heat. This keeps the rain out while allowing constant ventilation throughout the day. Its air- conditioning system saves energy by using passive cooling coils to chill the air without the use of fans. These coils work by creating a natural convection cycle, cooling the air as it sinks downwards, which displaces the warm air upwards. The Arc has already been awarded the Green Mark Platinum in 2017 – the highest award for sustainable building design in Singapore from the Building and Construction Authority. Students Activities Center (SAC) SAC is located below Lee Wee Nam Library and adjacent to the Global Lounge. Facilities at SAC: 1. Lounge 2. Console games ($1/hr) 3. Board Games 4. Billiard Table 5. Computer Terminals 6. Secretariat rooms for the Students' Union and the Non-academic Constituent Clubs 26

From beautiful nature reserves, to a buzzing nightlife and everything in between, you can be sure to find something to entertain you in your free time. Here are a few places of interest… Marina Bay Marina Bay in Singapore has undergone a transformation of epic proportions. Once a quiet body of water at the entrance of the Singapore River, this area now stands as a spectacular example of how this miniscule country has come to be one of the world's most luxurious travel destinations. Overlapping the Financial District, Clarke Quay and the central Civic District towards the north, Marina Bay boasts some of Singapore's most iconic hotels, skyscrapers and attractions, as well as the Merlion fountain! It is difficult to ignore the iconic Marina Bay Sands resort too, which itself is home to a substantial list of great things to do and see. Clarke Quay Clarke Quay is a unique conserved historical landmark located along the Singapore River and at the fringe of Singapore's Central Business District. It is within walking distance of the Clarke Quay MRT Station and the newly opened Fort Canning MRT Station, making it well accessible by public transportation. Comprising five blocks of restored shophouses and warehouses infused with funky art-deco structures, Clarke Quay plays host to a wide range of dining and entertainment options, and has become an attraction for both locals and tourists over the years. 29
Islands Did you know that Singapore actually consists of over 60 islands? You do now! Sentosa Island is Singapore's playground and features 3 beaches with cool bars and restaurants. Also on Sentosa you will find. Universal Studios, Madam Tussaud's, Adventure Cove Waterpark and a whole bunch of other fun and exciting activities. Or if you prefer your islands a little more laid back, then you might like to visit Pulau Ubin for some mountain biking, or to hire a kayak and paddle through the beautiful mangroves. Be sure to take some sun screen! Cinemas The closest cinema to NTU is the Golden Village cinema at Jurong Point, just a short bus ride away. Or maybe you prefer a slightly bigger cinematic experience? No problem...there is an IMAX located at Shaw's Theatre in the J-Cube mall in Jurong East. And cinephiles preferring a more indie experience can visit the Projector, located in the historic Golden Theatre near Nicoll Highway MRT station. Museums For the culture vultures among you, you may wish to visit some of Singapore's many museums. Discover how art and science merge at the lotus-shaped ArtScience museum near Marina Bay Sands. Or for those of a more anthropological persuasion, you can learn more about local cultures at the Malay Heritage Centre or the Peranakan Museum. Details of all of the museums (and there are plenty!) can be found on the National Heritage Board's website at the following address- www.nhb.gov.sg. The list of museums together with corresponding links are presented as below. ü National Museum of Singapore (http://nationalmuseum.sg/) ü Asian Civilisations Museum (http://acm.org.sg/) ü Peranakan Museum (https://www.peranakanmuseum.org.sg/) ü Singapore Philatelic Museum (http://spm.org.sg/) ü Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall (http://sysnmh.org.sg/en) ü Malay Heritage Centre (http://malayheritage.org.sg/en) ü Indian Heritage Centre (http://indianheritage.org.sg/en) ü Reflections at Bukit Chandu ü ArtScience Museum (https://zh.marinabaysands.com/museum.html) Nature If nature is your thing, then you can take a walk around some of Singapore's nature reserves. Take a stroll among the tree canopies on the Treetop Walk at MacRitchie Reservoir. Prefer something a little less vertigo-inducing? Try Sungei Buloh, with its birdwatching shelters and saltwater crocodiles! Or if crocodiles aren't your thing, then you could take a hike through Bukit Timah Nature Reserve...who knows, you may even catch a glimpse of the legendary Bukit Timah Monkey Man! Take plenty of water and a packed lunch though as hiking in this climate can be thirsty work. 30
Wildlife Housing more than 2800 animals of over 300 species, the Singapore Zoo is another not to be missed destination. Be sure to allocate 2 days for River Safari and Night Safari as well! Closer to NTU would be the Jurong Bird Park, though underrated but truly worth a visit! Night Life Calling all clubbing enthusiasts, let's hit the clubs! Get a taste of Singapore's night life because here, you can find bars and restaurants to suit all preferences. From the funky little cafes and bars in Arab Street to the lively clubs of Clarke Quay and Boat Quay...you can definitely find somewhere to get your groove on a weekend. And ladies, look out for fantastic deals on Wednesdays' ladies night! Not one for clubbing? Try Cosmic Bowling and Darts Café instead! Hidden Gems in Singapore I. Dakota Crescent – One of the areas in Singapore you must visit before it vanishes, Dakota Crescent is a little neighbourhood built in the 1950s where the kampong spirit is strong. Located off Old Airport Road, this cluster of low-rise flats is one of Singapore's oldest public estates, and has not been revamped since its construction. ii. Lim Chu Kang Jetty – A quiet spot leading out into the sea in a corner of Singapore, the Lim Chu Kang Jetty is unknown even to many locals. Here, something from our country's kampong roots seems to have survived; the jetty is made entirely of wood and looks out to our neighbour, Malaysia. iii. Former Queen's Theatre – Opened in the early-1930s, Queen's Theatre on Guillemard Road was a hot favourite with Singaporeans for its Malay, Indonesian and even Egyptian movies. Back in the day, tickets cost $2 for circle seats, $1.50 for the back stall and $1 for the front stall. (They probably even let you bring outside food in!) The cinema eventually closed in 1982 and today, the building is occupied by Grandlink Square. iv. The Singapore Really, Really Free Market – A market where everything is free? Sounds too good to be true – but it is. At RRFM, nothing is for sale and all goods and services are shared. Anyone with stuff or skills to share are welcome to set up a stall, and if you find something you want, you're welcome to have it. SRRFM is the Singapore chapter of the RRFM, a movement that counters capitalism in a non-reactionary way and while promoting mutual sharing. So put your money-lined bags away, come with goodwill and good skills and have a great time. 31

The Crew has member-crews dedicated to specific dance forms. Each member-crew performs in various events and competitions in and outside NTU. The Crew seeks to promote the culture of performing arts, through the creative integration of traditional and modern elements. Members go through regular training sessions and rehearsals on a weekly basis. The primary focus is to celebrate the diversity of the cultural background of NTU and to develop a strong sense of 'liberation through movement and expression'. Tips for graduate students ü Join the various orientation programs organised by your school-based Graduate Students' Clubs to get more academic-related information and NTUGSA events to widen your social circle outside your academic environment. ü Explore the various libraries, centres and institutes around the campus as well the resources of the schools. There's so much more than you think there is! ü Take some time out to feel the sun and catch some fresh air. It's never too early or late in NTU for a casual stroll and jog around the campus. Be assured of company round the clock and, if you pay attention, you can see beautiful birds and various wildlife around. ü If you hate queuing up at food stalls and prefer a quiet and peaceful meal, avoid the rush hours around 12 noon and 6 pm. However, most food stalls on campus close by 8/8:30 pm and the choice of food items is limited after 7:30 pm. ü Shuttle buses are more frequent before 10 am and around lunch time. If you're in a hurry, be sure to check the phone and web apps for the bus arrival times on either of the internal loops. Most locations on campus are easily accessible by both loops. ü Undergraduate clubs (more than 100 of them on campus) also welcome graduate students. Do check out their stalls and booths at the beginning of the semester. 38
