PELJEŠAC BRIDGE WITH ACCESS ROADS AND STON BYPASS
ISSUES RELATED TO THE EXISTING TRAFFIC CONDITIONS • The territory of the Republic of Croatia (RH) is divided by a narrow strip of the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH). This discontinuity of the Croatian territory causes many difficulties regarding economic flows, poor accessibility of public services (public health, education, etc.), alienation of local communities, etc. • The mentioned difficulties have been acknowledged in recent agreements between RH and BiH and attempts have been made at solving them to mutual satisfaction. • New circumstances occurred when RH entered the EU, as well as a need to overcome negative effects of the discontinuity of the RH/EU territory. The need to resolve the mentioned obstacles is particularly emphasized in view of the expected Croatia’s admission into the Schengen zone. • Croatia’s admission into the Schengen zone shall result in a dramatic decrease in accessibility and in potential for the regional development of the separate territory of RH (Dubrovnik-Neretva County - DNŽ).
PELJEŠAC BRIDGE WITH ACCESS ROADS AND STON BYPASS
DIFFICULTIES SOLVED BY CONNECTING THE SEPARATE TERRITORY OF RH • Pelješac Bridge with access roads will have a strong positive impact on economic development of the territoy of DNŽ. This positive impact is not only based on ensuring a transport connection between the separate territories of RH, but also on a better connection between the areas of Pelješac, Korčula and Mljet and Dubrovnik, Split and Zagreb, as well as with other important development and public service centers. • Pelješac Bridge ensures permanent link and shortest travel times between the separate territories of RH, and it is the only alternative that resolves existing legal issues. • The design solution covers all technical elements which adequately take into account the international legislation (internatioal law of the sea) and enhances local and regional accessibility to social and economic services, including the tourist industry.
