Economic Development Officer’s Message Hello, and thank you for taking the time to check out our Souris Guidebook. I fall more in love with Souris and the surrounding area every year. The seasons come and go, and I find that this is the one place in the world where I am completely happy to come home to. Someone once described the whole area as “park like”. That’s exactly it! If you were to take a large inhale, then slowly exhale you will know the feeling here in Souris. It’s right there, halfway through that slow exhale when you feel the tension leaving and a calm washes over you. I might be biased, but we have THE BEST shops here in town. From our drool-worthy bakery to the unique and eclectic stores to find treasures you will be met time and again by top notch customer service and a friendly welcome. In addition to all the necessities, we have art, flowers, jewelry, and wellness shops. Hungry? We have excellent restaurants with something for everyone. The accommodations are great too if you are coming to spend a little time and really get to know the community. More than anything, I welcome you to Souris. This guidebook was one of the first things my family and I explored to get familiar with Souris and I hope it helps you to enjoy our community too. If you are interested in support for your business, please contact me and I will be happy to help find answers you need to grow! The Swinging Bridge Celebrating Canada’s Longest Swinging Pedestrian Bridge The Souris Swinging Bridge is one of Manitoba’s Star Attractions. The first bridge was built in 1904 by Squire Sowden who wanted to improve access to town from his land on the east-side of the river in order to make it more attractive for potential buyers. Since 1904, the swinging bridge has been reinforced, rebuilt, and seen many pranks and antics performed on it over the years. In 2005, it was featured on a Canadian postage stamp. The current bridge was completed in August of 2013 and the new design has allowed Souris to once again reclaim the title of having Canada’s longest swinging suspension bridge boasting 604 feet. Spanning the Souris River, it is a popular backdrop for beautiful photographs that help capture life’s important milestones such as a graduation, wedding, or a family reunion. Celebrating 117 years since its original construction, the Swinging Bridge remains our town’s most famous landmark. It is truly a beautiful sight to appreciate any time of year! Follow the blue and yellow Star Attraction signs located throughout Souris to help locate the bridge. Photo: Kim de Koning 10 www.SourisManitoba.com

The Plum Museum & Visitor Centre 142 – 1st Street South (204) 741-0631 In an effort to share with visitors the long history of the bridge, its impact on the local community, and the construction of the new design, an exhibit was put together and is on display this summer at the Plum Museum and Visitor Centre. Through support from the Province of Manitoba Tourism Development Fund, the bridge exhibit includes an interactive 65” SMARTBOARD, which includes touchscreen videos and images. The Plum Museum, now part of Travel Manitoba Visitor Services Network, this structure was first erected in 1883 and is Souris’ oldest remaining public building. Originally St. Luke’s Anglican Church, it was decommissioned in 1989 and later moved to its current location where it was restored to its original Victorian colours of plum and chocolate brown. Here you’ll find tourism information, souvenirs, and more than likely, a muster of peacocks while touring the museum collections. In the off-season, the building can be rented for private functions. Also makes a great place for a wedding! Admission is free, donations are welcome. Open July and August. Photos: Kim de Koning 12 www.SourisManitoba.com
