      Happy 110th Birthday,
        Delta Kappa Psi!

Per recommendations from the CDC and the Governor of the State of California,
Delta Kappa Psi will not hold its 110th Birthday Luncheon this May. We look forward
to seeing all of our beloved Lavender Ladies and celebrating 111 years of sisterhood at
the 2021 Delta Birthday Luncheon!

President’s Message
Dear Delta Sisters,
Like many of you, I cannot believe where time has gone. As I write this, I have served three-quarters of my
term as Alumnae Executive Council President. I cannot believe I will turn over the gavel in May, and I cannot
believe it is 2020. Our President-Elect is Ivy Scott, and she will be a great addition to Delta Exec. If you do not
know Ivy, you will be able to meet her at the Birthday Luncheon in May. I will remain on the Council for one
more year as Past-President, but the reins will be firmly in Ivy’s hands. Being so involved with Delta continues to
be a great joy for me and while I may be stepping down soon as President, I will continue to be involved where
I can, including in my local Alumnae Chapter. Delta remains strong through our Alumnae Chapters and our
Initiated Members. I look forward to meeting the new Lovely Lavender Ladies welcomed into our sorority in
January – just in time to help usher Delta into its 110th year. .
The past year has been filled with traditional events and activities including:
     • The 109th Birthday Luncheon hosted by the Alpha Chapter at the University of Redlands Orton Center.
There truly was “No Place Like Home.” It was a wonderful afternoon, and our luncheon continues to be a
great Delta Tradition and a time to reconnect with Deltas of all ages. The Delta Chapter did a wonderful job
with the raffle and silent auction items (along with donations from our other Chapters) which raised money
     for scholarships and awards.
     • Our Annual “Cuca’s and a Cold One” event at Homecoming, hosted by the Omega Chapter, was held at the
Delta House with Alumnae, New and Initiated Members and their families in attendance. What a fantastic
opportunity for families to see what Delta is all about. We also acknowledged three IMs that received
scholarships from Delta’s Anita Gordon Hentschke Endowed Scholarship Fund .
     • The Mother-Daughter Tea was held at the Delta House last March, hosted by the Omega Chapter. This is
another fun tradition where IMs and their mothers or other guests come together to celebrate the graduating
seniors who receive their traditional Recipe Boxes at the event. It was my distinct pleasure to be able to give
my daughter, Mary, her Recipe Box at the Tea.
Thank you to all the Alumnae Chapter members who faithfully plan and host these functions year to year.
Without their work, we would not have these opportunities to see Delta Sisters from near and far nor the
opportunity to showcase Delta to family and friends. If you are not involved in an Alumnae Chapter, I highly
encourage you to join one in your area. If you do not live in Southern California, please consider starting a
chapter in your area. Please contact me if you are interested in learning how to start a chapter at hojono@cox.net.
Delta has numerous ways to keep in touch. We have a website for Deltas only, a private Facebook page, and
an alumnae Instagram. Please use these social media outlets to stay up to date on what Delta is doing on campus
and off, and to remain in touch with your Delta sisters.
Executive Council continues to support the IMs and Alumnae Chapters in various ways. This includes
recognizing a Delta Girl of the Year and Delta Woman of the Year, presenting scholarships and Named
Awards to IMs, and providing other support where needed. Executive Council is also instituting another award
to recognize an IM for her exemplary community service, on and off campus. We expect to honor the first
recipient of the Making a Difference Outstanding Community Service Award at the Birthday Luncheon in May.
Executive Council continues to discuss how else we can spend some of our non-designated funds to support
Deltas, but we cannot continue to do these things without your financial support through paying annual dues.
There are several levels of dues giving. Please see the Treasurer’s Report for full information on how you can help
support both alumnae and IM activities by paying your dues. Note: If you are part of an Alumnae Chapter, you
can pay your dues to your Chapter Treasurer and she will forward a portion to Executive Council.
If you are interested in serving on Executive Council, feel free to contact me to discuss open positions and
how you can be involved. Serving on Executive Council is an ideal way to have your finger on the pulse of Delta.
You would be surprised at the things you learn about our sorority!
Thank you for allowing me to be part of this amazing organization and to serve as the President of your
Alumnae Executive Council. I want to especially thank my fellow Council officers and members who kept me on
track and assisted me in more ways than I can count. Deltas do amazing things in Delta, at the University, and in

Treasurer’s Report
We continue to receive the majority of our income from the payment of dues by Delta alumnae. This year,
close to 60% of those paying dues paid at the Royal Purple or Lovely Lavender sponsor level. We still are only
receiving a handful of dues at the Young Alumnae level of $15 but hope this will increase in the future. (Just a
reminder: if you graduated within the last 10 years, your dues are only half of the regular annual dues of $30.)
So how are the dues you pay being used? They are used to support the Advisors in their work with the Initiated
Members including providing pizza when the Advisors meet with the IM Exec Team at the start of each semester
and the traditional New Member Breakfast. In addition, dues are used to cover the cost of each graduating Delta
and her mother (or guest) attendingthe annual Mother-Daughter Tea , as well as the cost of the IMs attending
“Cuca’s and a Cold One” at Homecoming. Dues also subsidize half the cost of the Birthday Luncheon for the
IMs , as well as covering the cost of the award given each year to the Delta Girl of the Year. Funds will also cover
the cost of the newly established Making a Difference Outstanding Community Service Award. We, of course,
have some overhead costs such as the cost of our website that are also covered by the dues we receive.
If you have not paid your dues this year, I am more than happy to still accept them. Checks may be mailed to:
Luann Bangsund, 648 Palo Alto Drive, Redlands, CA 92373.
The other sources of income are from individual and Chapter donations to the Named Awards funds,
financial support earmarked for the Delta House and from the raffle and silent auction each year at the Birthday
Luncheon. The proceeds from the raffle go to fund the Named Awards given each year to IMs. The proceeds
from the silent auction are donated to the University of Redlands to increase the Anita Gordon Hentschke
Endowed Scholarship fund. Last year we were able to donate $3,410 to the endowment of the scholarship.

Historian’s Report
The scanning of Delta history continues with the older Doings having been scanned most recently. Our oldest
copy dates from 1939 and we have several from the 1940s. Note: These early copies were created by the Active
Chapter! There is still a large variety of photos and memorabilia to scan. We hope to upload all of this to cloud
storage at some point in the future.

There’s No Place Like Home
With a fresh coat of exterior paint and new laminate flooring throughout, the Delta House looks amazing! A
HUGE “shout out” goes to the Martel family (Mia Martel ’22 joined Delta last fall) for their donation of a “Ring”
doorbell system for the House to enhance security. Delta House Funds will be used to pay the annual fee for the
system’s operation and monitoring.
Thank you to those who attending “Cuca’s and a Cold One” at Homecoming and put money in one of the
“purple pigs”. Those funds have been put to good use to provide the House with a set of rechargeable back-up
batteries for the “Ring” system, a hose, a Swiffer Wet Jet for wood floors, interior door mats and a variety of
cleaning supplies.
Future projects include the repainting of the decorative plaques on the backyard fence and hopefully
convincing the University it’s time for interior paint. We are also in need of additional purple E-Z UPs and
purple plastic beverage buckets for events so we will be working on acquiring those.
Deltas interested in donating to the House Fund may send a check (made payable to the University of
Redlands with “Delta House” indicated in the notes section) to: Office of Development, University of Redlands,
P.O. Box 3080, Redlands, CA 92373-0999. New or “gently used” household items are welcome too. Please email
Lori Hatfield at buick1913@msn.com if you have items to donate or want to discuss anything Delta House
related.

Advisory Team Update
The life of a Delta Alumnae Advisor is never boring, that’s for sure! In addition to basically being “on call 24/7”
to provide ongoing counsel and support, Advisors enjoy meeting formally with the Initiated Member Executive
Officers each semester, hosting the New Member Breakfast, and attending Formal Rush, the Presents Dinner, the
Mother-Daughter Tea and the Senior Wine and Cheese as schedules permit. The opportunity to spend individual
time with a few of the New Members over coffee or a meal is always a treat. Our work can be time-consuming,
but is important, and seems genuinely appreciated by the current members of Delta as well as the University with
the recent addition of Janet Sitton Grenda ‘84 and Lori Hays Hatfield ’80 representing Delta at Greek Alumni
Advisory Committee (GAAC) meetings.
GAAC was created a year ago with the intention of fostering a stronger partnership with the University,
while becoming a collective voice for undergraduate and alumni Greek communities. Similar committees have
existed in the past but Ken Grcich, Senior Associate Dean of Student Affairs, believes the positive energy and
relationships of the members, the robust agenda for each meeting, and Mackenzie Oppenheim Dawes’ leadership
(Beta Lambda, ’07) as Chair are key factors to its success. Erin Sanborn, Director of Student Involvement and
Success, also partners with GAAC to support the present and future Greek students.
Over the past year, the committee created a leadership structure, instituted a policy that no new members
can serve as Sober Hosts at parties, reviewed the Greek Council constitution, hosted an All-Greek event at
Homecoming and rewrote the Organization Housing Handbook and Contract Supplement for Residence Life
and Housing to adopt. Upcoming topics include reviewing IFC and Panhellenic rules for consistency, creating a
Greek alumni-wide Advisory Team Structure, updating the Rush and Bid Process, redefining University Advisor
expectations and evaluating how House Funds are managed.
Katie Miller Gaw ’97, Elizabeth Peale Hind ’95, Claudia Proctor Newton ’84 and Cathy Moreland Schilling ’76
continue to round out our Alumnae Advisory Team with Meigan Karraker, Assistant Director, Academic Success
at the University of Redlands, serving as University Advisor for Delta.

Actives Update
The active circle continues to preserve Delta traditions through rush, new member process events, songs, Lip
Sync, and Presents. Delta welcomed 25 sisters this year, with 16 new members joining in the fall and nine in the

spring. All members enjoyed sisterhood bonding events throughout the year, including a trip to Big Bear for the
fall informal.
On campus, Delta engaged in community service; the sorority is currently transitioning their philanthropy
from the American Cancer Society to Redlands Family Services. Delta’s soccer team placed second in the spring
intramural tournament.
To support the renovations to the Delta House, the actives thoroughly cleaned out the garage and shed, and
they are enjoying the added security of the house’s new Ring system.

Actives + Academics + Community Service = SUCCESS!
The Initiated Members achieved a 3.6 overall GPA for the fall of 2019 which is a figure well above the
minimum required of Greek organizations by the University and another increase over the fall of 2018…got to
love the trend!
Deltas continue to have a strong presence on the Dean’s List with half the current membership achieving that
honor for fall 2019…wow! Those having a semester GPA of 3.65 or above and therefore being on the Dean’s
List include Lauren Bingham, Sara Bond, Madeline Bush, Savannah Casey, Brittany Dinkins, Sarah Draves,
Emily Duncan, Michelle Encinas, Kameron Fernandez, Joren Fettig, Allison Gillies, Marissa Hernandez, Samara
Herrick, Kelly Klish, Maya Lang, Sarah Levi, Molly Lindsay, Amy Markowicz, Claire Olmstead, Makenna
Parenti, Isabelle Pilato, Amanda Riebe, Janean Ruttner, Madeline Salminen-Cunningham, Clara Sanders,
Payton Shatafian, Emily Shipcott, Samantha Tafoya, Natalie Thayer, Alison Waddles and Charleston Walters. Six
Initiated Members received a 4.0 GPA for fall – Lauren Bingham, Sara Bond, Emily Duncan, Makenna Parenti,
Janean Ruttner and Madeline Salminen-Cunningham. Makenna, as the woman with the highest cumulative
GPA of the six, was honored with a traditional Delta pin to wear this Spring.
Community Service is another area in which Deltas continue to excel. The sorority completes anywhere
from 500-1,000+ hours as a group in any given semester depending on how many women are on campus. Each
Initiated Member is required to complete 10 hours of community service per semester but, like academics,
there are those who go above and beyond. In recent years, the Initiated Member with the highest number of
community service hours was honored with a traditional pin to wear the following semester. If that was still the
case, Amy Markowicz would be wearing a pin having completed 38.75 hours of community service in the fall of
2019…way to go Amy!
However, Executive Council has taken acknowledging Initiated Members’ community service efforts one
step further. Beginning this spring, a new “Making a Difference Outstanding Community Service Award” will
be added to the awards presented at the Birthday Luncheon for which all current Deltas may apply. Just like
the Lois Hentschke Scholton Leadership Award, women will complete an application to be considered for the
“Making a Difference Outstanding Community Service Award” and a selection committee will determine the
recipient. A monetary award equal to the Delta Girl and Named Awards will accompany the honor, but the
award amount will be split between the honoree and her charity of choice.

Madeline Huston
Delta Girl of the Year
The Delta Girl of the Year is a very special honor awarded a Delta senior who
has given her time to the sorority, the University of Redlands and the community.
Our 2019 Delta Girl of the Year, Madeline Huston, represents the best of Delta. Her
friends describe her as kind, hardworking, dedicated, loyal and considerate. She
joined Delta in the Fall of 2017 with “Livin’ on Cloud Nine”. She has held numerous
offices including Song Chair, Chaplain, Gifts Chair, Presents Chair and President.
Her sisters also noted that she volunteers her time with Big Buddies and puts one
hundred and ten percent into everything she does.
Madeline was born and raised in Redlands and she is both a University of
Redlands and Delta legacy. Her aunt is a Delta, and her mother is a faculty member
at Redlands. Madeline loves spending time with her dog and hanging out with her
family and friends. She is also a huge fan of the sitcom “Friends”. She is a math major
and will be receiving her teaching credential upon graduation. In summary, her
sisters agree, “She is truly the definition of what Delta stands for.”

                            Connie Pezoldt Smith
                            Delta Woman of the Year
The Delta Woman of the Year is a very special honor given to a Delta alumnae
who has given her time to the sorority and the University of Redlands. Often, the
recipient has also shown outstanding dedication to her community, her professional
aspirations and her personal and family life. This year’s Delta Woman of the Year,
Connie Pezoldt Smith, has spent the last 40 years building a very impressive resume
in all aspects. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Multiple Subjects from the
University of Redlands in 1981. She completed her Master of Science in Educational
Administration degree in 1989 at California State University Fullerton. She is
currently working on her Doctorate in Leadership for Educational Justice at the University of Redlands.
Connie has spent the last 38 years making a difference in the field of education. She began her career as
a classroom teacher, becoming a mentor teacher then IBM education consultant. She became an Assistant
Principal, then District Curriculum Coordinator and ultimately elementary school Principal. Her professional
associations and accomplishments have included former Association of California School Administrators
(ACSA) Region 17 Elementary Administrator Representative, Adjunct Professor at Concordia University in
Irvine, member of the Tustin Public Schools Foundation Board of Directors and Orange Unified School District’s
Administrator of the Year. She is also a member of the Kiwanis of Orange and volunteers numerous hours at the
Orange County Bob Hope USO at John Wayne Airport. This is a respite place for women and men who have or
are currently serving our nation’s military and are traveling.
Connie joined Delta in the spring of 1979 and held many offices as well as being a SPUR. She joined the
Kappa Alumnae chapter in 1981 and has been an active member for 38 years signing up for everything no one
else wants to do. She served as Alumnae Executive Council Vice President for three years and was on the “sewing
team” that refurbished the Initiated Members’ robes. She has served on two Alumni Reunion Committees and
is a member of the University of Redlands Cortner Society.
Connie was born, raised and lives in Orange County, CA and has been married to her husband, Phillip, for
26 years. She has two sons. Garrett is a student at Concordia University in Irvine, after serving four years in the
United States Marine Corps, and Grant recently graduated from the University of San Francisco.

2000 time capsule unveiled
The “Delta Dungeon,” which is now a closet within the Delta House, was found to be in desperate need of
cleaning last summer, so Lori Hatfield and Cathy Schilling went to work. The unexpected treasure uncovered
was a “time capsule” from spring 2000 which was to be opened in spring 2010. Well, we missed that deadline by
nine years with the capsule being buried at the bottom of the closet and the key, which was supposed to be in the
“Patronesses’ possession,” nowhere to be found. Created by the 10 Temptations, Lascivious 11, Incandescent 9,
Heavenly 7, Naughty 9, Flirtations 4 and 11 Electrix, the capsule ended up at Hatfield Buick GMC where shop
staff had fun figuring out how to break into it. Some of the contents of the capsule are pictured below. Enjoy
your walk down memory lane, capsule contributors!
