HOW MUCH ARE YOU WORTH? FY 2018 TECH + DIGITAL SALARY GUIDE paxus.com.au Across Australia and New Zealand
FORWARD We are entering an era of unprecedented change, as technology continues to accelerate at a rapid rate and transform the world we live in. Digital disruption and innovation are redefining and shaping tech and digital roles and functions, with an increased focus on raising the bar in terms of user experience to meet growing customer expectations. As a jobseeker, your ability to adapt your skill set to meet market demand by identifying areas of market growth is an inherent part of your success and employability. Knowing where the jobs are, what skills are in demand, and how much you are worth will help you identify if it is time to move roles, ask for a pay rise, or move into a niche area where there may be an opportunity to capitalise on skill shortages. Our FY18 Tech + Digital Salary Guide and Market Trends Report is designed to give you the information you need so you can make the right career decisions. We have summarised key industry trends, and compiled research from across the market to help you identify what you should be earning, and what areas provide opportunity for growth and development. KEY HIRING INDUSTRIES With the number of ICT roles in Australia predicted to increase by 14.9% by 20201, it is no surprise that ICT and Associated Services took the lead in terms of hiring capacity across Q2 2017. Government followed closely behind at 40.7%, with Manufacturing, Banking and Finance, Professional and Scientific Services and Other making up the remaining 15.8%.2 Other 6.1% Professional & Scientific Services 2.0% Banking & Finance 3.9% Manufacturing 3.8% ICT & Associated Services 43.5% Government 40.7% Chart 1.1 LOCATION OF ENGAGEMENTS According to APSCo’s June SkillsMatch Report, we have seen the misalignment of ICT job advertisements and engagements in 13.9% 13.4% 4.9% 4.4% some states across the country. NSW saw the most variance, with jobs advertised outweighing engagements by 13.2%, 3.3% 7.1% indicating key candidate shortages and significant opportunities for job seekers. 43.1% 29.9% Candidate shortages were also prevalent in WA, QLD and VIC, however to a lesser extent. 6.3% 18.8% Advertisements 27.2% 26.4% Engagements Chart 1.23 How much are you worth? ICT JOB AD GROWTH Over the past year, ICT job ads experienced growth in all states, with the exception of NSW and ACT, where job ads declined by 6% and 14% respectively4. The lack of candidates in the NSW market however has more than offset the decline in job ads, with job ads still outweighing engagements by 13.2%. The QLD job market ascertained the most growth, with ICT job ads increasing by 29%5. This coupled with a stable QLD candidate market, offers good conditions for job seekers. NT, SA, VIC and WA also experienced steady job ad growth across the course of the year.6 NEW ICT JOB ADS JUNE 2016 VS JUNE 2017 QLD 29% NT 24% SA 18% VIC 15% WA 12% -14% -6% NSW ACT Chart 1.3 How much are you worth? ICT JOBS + SKILLS CURRENTLY IN DEMAND Across the first part of 2017, we have seen a strong resurgence of software oriented roles, with these jobs among the top ICT positions advertised.7 The demand for software oriented professionals is set to continue, with the Australian Department of Employment predicting that software and application programming roles will increase by 18.4% by 2020.8 This provides significant opportunity for job seekers with niche skills in this area, increasing role choice and potential remuneration bargaining power. ICT Project Manager jobs were among the top roles filled, however they did not appear among the top roles advertised (Chart 1.4). We have seen clients rely more and more on us and our referral networks (particularly our strong relationship with The Project Management Institute) to fill Project Manager roles, as the size and business critical nature of tech projects continue to escalate. Other top jobs filled however were more generic ICT roles, signifying the lack of candidate diversification into niche areas such as software and application programming to match market demand. Our recruiters have also seen increased demand for cyber security professionals, data scientists, data miners, cloud computing and infrastructure specialists. Of these roles, cyber security specialists have proven to be the hardest to fill, as the gap between supply and demand for professionals “Paxus has a strong presence in this area continues to widen. in the project management community, leveraging their industry connections to find their clients great project practitioners. THE CYBER SECURITY TALENT CRISIS As the demand for cyber security professionals continues to escalate, employers are starting to reach crisis point - which is good news for job seekers with cyber security skills. The Australian Financial Review reports global job site Indeed10 determined that employer demand was almost three times the supply of cyber security professionals in Q1 2017. This shortfall is only predicted to widen, with a projected deficit of 1.5 million cyber security specialists globally by 2019.11 This is no surprise, as according to Telstra’s 2017 Cyber Security Report, 59% of businesses in Australia experienced at least one disruptive security breach a month in 2016, compared to just 24% the previous year.12 WHY CYBER SECURITY IS ONE OF THE HOTTEST SKILL SETS 59% 57% 6 TRILLION 59% of organisations in Australia 57% of organisations experiencing a Cybercrime damages will cost the detected a security breach on at ransomware incident paid the ransom world $6 trillion annually by 2021. least a monthly basis over 2016. - but only 70% got their files back. 1.5 1 ION T RI IL L LIO M L N There will be a shortfall of 1.5 million The world will spend $1 trillion In Australia, 61% of C-Level cyber security professionals cumulatively from 2017-2021 Executives are held responsible for by 2019. on cyber security. security breaches. DAYS TO FILL Across Q1, it took organisations on average 40 days to fill permanent ICT jobs, and 34 days to fill contract ICT roles14 (Chart 1.6). Contract days to fill are up 36% from Q4 2016, where organisations took on average 25 days to fill a contract role. This is a significant increase, signifying the increased demand for niche roles which is currently outweighing candidate supply. Permanent days to fill also increased from Q4 2016 by 25%. 40 DAYS TO FILL PERMANENT 34 DAYS TO FILL CONTRACT Chart 1.6 How much are you worth? Paxus FY18 Tech + Digital Salary Guide 8

THE INTERVIEW EXPERIENCE
As a job seeker, knowing how to prepare for an interview, and what to expect is key to your success. INTERVIEW PREPARATION A recent study by LinkedIn16 taking a look inside the candidate mindset revealed that prior to an interview, candidates use the hiring company’s website and LinkedIn page as their primary research/ evaluation tool, followed by search engines and contacts at the hiring company. Ensure you investigate each one of these sources prior to your interview, and pay particular attention to the ‘About us’, ‘Careers’, ‘Our people’ and ‘Media’ or ‘News’ sections (or the like) on the company’s website. In addition to this, make sure you track the company’s activity on their LinkedIn page and other socials, so you are across company movements, events, and involvement in various industry initiatives. Media releases are also a great source of information and a good talking point, so make sure you read up on what has been happening at the company. If you know anyone at the hiring company, touch base with them too to see if they can give you some insight. Your Paxus Account Manager will also be able to give you background information on your prospective employer - take note of their advice, as they have close relationships with their clients and an in-depth understanding of their requirements. THE INTERVIEW EXPERIENCE Our clients know that providing a good interview experience is fundamental to acquiring the best talent. They want to ensure that your interview process is streamlined and efficient to keep you engaged, and give you a good indication as to what it would be like to work for them. Research shows to match candidates’ expectations, employers should aim to complete their recruitment from application to hire within 1-2 months, using on average 3 interviews, and provide prompt follow up and feedback17.
