View from the Hill June 2019 From 30th May to 9th June, that is, for church people, Ascension Day to Pentecost, we are called to pray by our Archbishops. Christians around the world will be praying for their communities, and, if you’ll excuse us, especially that our neighbours and family who do not yet know what Jesus can do for us, might somehow find out. Perhaps that will be through our kind actions, through prayers we say, by the power of the Holy Spirit, or by something they read in church, on the media, or given out by us. Maybe even by something in this magazine! There’s a perfect piece in Rev Alan’s contribulltion (not a spelling mistake!) this month that I hope makes you smile and think at the same time! At Parwich, Thorpe and Tissington there will be prayer stations, and of course, all the churches are open every day for you to call into. It can be very special to make time to spend with God, as Adam and Eve did in the Garden of Eden, and Jesus did regularly often in the wilderness. What might the benefit be? Well, people who write in our visitor books often talk about the peace they find there. In this busy world, with so much bad news offered to us in the press and media, peace is a commodity we badly need. We’ll be exploring possible ways to pray ‘Thy Kingdom Come’ in Tissington’s Family Service on 2nd June, and, the Fruits of the Spirit in Tissington’s Family Service on 4th August, the promised qualities that help with the strains of life given to Christians by the Holy Spirit (see Carolyn Baguley’s piece in this magazine). You’re welcome to come whichever village you live in, and especially if you are a visitor on holiday. When we don’t know what to do about a situation, we might say “I’ll just pray”, and sometimes, and often, praying is the most important thing we can do, and is what we ought to do first! May I pray for health and peace and wellbeing for each reader, and those we carry on our hearts, in the name of our Saviour Christ. Revd Carollyn

Peak Five – Pondering in the Peak It can be heart breaking for farmers when TB strikes the herd. Looking at this wonderful bull, you can begin to imagine why. This beautiful looking bull is also called a Christian by one farmer. Why is that? Carolyn Baguley, a farm vet that I know well explains what it means for her to be a Christian in an article she shared with me for the agricultural chaplaincy and thought I would share in this month’s magazine. And spare a thought for farmers in the benefice and beyond that face the constant threat of TB and the uncertainty it brings. Rev Alan. “That bull’s a Christian, vit’nery, a real Christian.” I was somewhat surprised by the farmer’s greeting as I clambered out of the car to do a pre-movement TB test on his prize animal. Clients don’t usually inform me of their animals’ religions, Christian or otherwise. It turned out that he meant the bull was kind. Usually when farmers go out of their way to tell me how kind their cattle are it’s because they’re trying to persuade me to TB test in a poor (or non-existent) handling system but, on this occasion, both the handling system and the bull’s behaviour were exemplary! But what does it mean to be a Christian? Is it someone who’s loving, kind, patient and well-behaved, and goes along to church sometimes? It’s far more than that – it’s to believe that Jesus Christ, God’s son, came to earth to die for us, and then defeated death by rising again, and it’s to trust and obey his teaching that we find in the Bible. The fruits of the Spirit (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control) should follow, and going to church allows us to meet and worship with other believers (although busy farmers may not always have time for that!). I’m not sure about the bull being a Christian, but I do believe that animals, as a wonderful part of God’s creation, bring glory to him. And I think that we can learn a lot from them – especially when they’re as peaceful, patient and self-controlled as the bull! Alan Griggs
Bible study June 2019 Fruit of the Spirit Galatians chapter 5 13 You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. 14 For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’ 16 So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. Here are some verses before the phrase that is quoted in this magazine, that Rev Alan has brought to our notice. We celebrate the first coming of the Holy Spirit to all the believers this month – Pentecost! For the first time, anyone who believes receives the Holy Spirit of God. Earlier in the Bible we read of special people; leaders, Kings, Prophets who had been filled with the Spirit, or as in some services, we say The Holy Ghost. But now that Jesus Christ has ascended into heaven to be with his Father, as he promised, the Holy Spirit comes to comfort us, guide us, remind us of everything Jesus has said to us. Questions for reflection, either on your own, or with other Christians. How do we increase the fruit of the Spirit in our self? (hint, we can ask the Holy Spirit – what would it be like for you?) What do you think the Fruit of the Spirit could help you with? Can you identify Fruit in other Christians that you know? Can you find evidence in the Letters (the books after the Gospels in the New Testament) of this fruit in the behavior of the new Christians and the Apostles (e.g. how they open their understanding to non-Jews, and relax the food laws). Could you pray today, to keep in step with the Holy Spirit, and to live by the Spirit in your daily life?

LINK. Each week for about a year we have printed the Bible readings and a little news on the reverse of a pre-printed sheet called the LINK, from Redemptorist Publications. These have little reflections that build on the readings, and when there are extra sheets, I hope that visitors to the churches have picked one up. Following a recommendation by Rev Joe Lister, we have a month of a free trial of a new format from Redemptorist. The Bible readings and the collects are pre-printed, and on the reverse, I have complied some notices about events in and around our church and communities. Please get in touch if you would like to submit something for the back page; I cannot guarantee to get it in, but I will try. If you can feed back through your wardens your thoughts about this trial format, that would help to make a decision about future months. Thank you. Rev’d Carollyn Resources for families, for prayer and reflection are available in our five churches. Prayer stations will be in St Peter’s church Parwich, St Mary’s Church Tissington, and St Leonards Church Thorpe; all welcome to explore.

Group Community Fire Safety – June 2019 Dear all, I hope you are enjoying our summer. Barbecue Fire Safety. When we experience hot sunny weather, it is natural to want to get out the barbecue, go outdoors and enjoy it with family and friends. By following some simple rules you can ensure your barbecue is a safe enjoyable event. Coal Barbecues. • Keep a bucket of water, sand or a garden hose nearby for emergencies. • Never leave a barbecue unattended. • Never use a barbecue indoors. Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service would like to remind you that the burning of all fossil fuels, gas, coal or wood, produces carbon monoxide (CO). Sadly every year we hear reports of deaths and serious injuries from CO poisoning in both tents and caravans. • People should never use stoves or disposable barbecues for either cooking or warmth in an enclosed space with poor ventilation. • We would also recommend that caravanners should have gas-powered appliances serviced annually and should consider using an audible carbon monoxide alarm inside their caravan. • Make sure your barbecue is well away from sheds, fences, shrubs or garden waste. • Only use enough charcoal to cover the base of the barbecue. • Ensure the barbecue is cool before moving it. • Empty the ashes onto bare garden soil and not into wheelie bins as burning embers could cause a fire. • Don't drink too much if you are in charge of the barbecue. • Never use petrol or paraffin to start or revive your barbecue; use only recognised lighters or starter fuels on cold coals. Gas Barbecues. • Never store gas cylinders under the stairs - if there is a fire they might explode and block your escape route. • Store gas cylinders outside, away from direct sunlight and frost. • Make sure the valve is turned off before changing the gas cylinder. • After cooking, turn the gas supply off first and then the barbecue control. This will stop any gas from leaking. • If you suspect a leak, turn off the gas cylinder and try brushing soapy water around all joints, watching for bubbles. • Always change gas cylinders outdoors or in a well ventilated area.
• Never store gas cylinders in your home as they are a serious hazard during a fire. If you have a medical need for gas cylinders, you require oxygen for example, they should be kept upright. Carbon Monoxide. CO Safety Information. Carbon Monoxide and its potential deadly properties are something that Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service have been campaigning to bring to the attention of the whole of the county for some considerable time. Carbon Monoxide (CO) is potentially fatal and even low-levels of the poison can cause lasting damage to your health. You can't see it, taste it or smell it but CO can kill quickly without warning. How is carbon monoxide produced? Carbon based fuels, including gas, oil, wood and coal, are usually safe to use. A shortage of air can cause the fuel to not burn properly. It is when the fuel does not burn properly that excess CO is produced. What does carbon monoxide do? When CO enters the body it is absorbed in place of oxygen in the bloodstream and prevents the blood from bringing oxygen to the cells, tissues and organs that need it. Starved of oxygen the cells and tissues can be damaged or die and organs can fail. Because of the way CO effects the body you should always be aware of the following symptoms: Headaches, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, drowsiness and fatigue. CO dangers in the home. Boilers, heaters and cooking appliances that use a carbon containing fuel (e.g. oil, gas and solid fuel) have the potential to produce carbon monoxide if they are not installed correctly, are poorly maintained or used incorrectly. • It is important that flues and chimneys are cleaned and that vents to the outside and are not blocked or covered. • Any un-flued heating or cooking appliance (which is meant to work without a flue) should not be used in small, closed-up rooms as adequate ventilation is required to ensure these appliances work correctly. • Keep appliances and vents clean to ensure that their is sufficient airflow. • It is important that appliances are maintained by an appropriately registered engineer. You can help further control the risks by installing an audible carbon monoxide alarm which is EN50291 compliant in your home. If you require any further advice on any of the items covered in this article or require a ‘Home Fire Safety Visit’, please call the Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service on 01773 305305 My regards to you all and keep safe. FITZHERBERT SCHOOL NEWS – JUNE 2019 This half term has been a very short one (only 4 weeks) but all our children have been working extremely hard especially those in years 2 and 6 who have all taken their SATs. All the children have worked very hard and we are very pleased with their very positive attitude towards the tests. On Friday 17 May our junior age children took part in a Homeless Sleepover in school. We had lots of cardboard for the children to make their beds from and we welcomed Kerry Collyer from the Padley Centre in Derby who came to talk to the children about why people become homeless and what they can do to help. We feel it is important that our children learn about other people who aren’t as fortunate and we hope that holding the sleepover will have taught our children a lot whilst they were in a safe familiar environment. During our Celebration Assembly on the last day of term in April, we were delighted to have been presented with the Runner Up trophy for our fundraising efforts at the BHF Sponsored Swim back in November. We just wanted to share a photo of the presentation with you – here are our swimmers pictured with Paula and John from the Derbyshire branch of the British Heart Foundation Our School Sports Night and Summer Fair will take place on Thursday 27 June starting at 6 pm everyone is welcome to come along to this special event. Please be aware that there will be extra cars in the village on that evening but we will be reminding parents to park sensibly and not to block driveways. If you would like any more information about any of the events mentioned then please get in touch, tel. 01335 350362 or more information about school can be found on our website: http://www.fitzherbert.derbyshire.sch.uk/

Thorpe COFFEE MORNINGS We had a very interesting Coffee Morning – somewhat different than usual! We were joined by two Police Community Support Officers, Joanne Dale and Elaine Porter. They had been asked to come along to talk to us about ‘Safer Neighbourhoods’. They gave Crime Prevention advice on three areas: Inside your home; Outside your home and On your street. Several of the items were common sense but some were not. I will list a certain amount of the advice given. Inside your home: Make it difficult for your valuables to be taken. Check who is at the door and don’t open it if you feel anxious. Leave some lights on or consider using plug timers if it will be dark before you get home. Store keys, including your car keys, out of sight and away from the front door area. Hide wallets, identity cards, passports and cash. Take photographs of your valuable items such as jewelry. Outside your home: Install good outside lighting. Lock doors and windows every time you leave the house, even when you are in the garden. Install a burglar alarm that can be seen on the outside of your property. Ask a neighbour, friend or relative to keep an eye on your property if you are going away. Keep ladders and gardening tools locked away to prevent them being used to gain entry to your home. On your street: Be a good neighbour and check on your neighbours’ properties if they are away. Remove any letters or deliveries from the letterbox or doorway. Burglars look for the best house to target, so report anyone acting suspiciously. To find out more one can visit the force website on www.derbyshire.police.uk
Unfortunately, there were not many of us present. The charity to benefit from our donations was The British Red Cross and £45.00 was donated – thank you to those of you who contributed. A letter from Christian Aid has been received to thank us for our donation from the April Coffee Morning. It opened with the words: ‘Your amazing effort in raising funds for Christian Aid will support our work around the world. The charity encourages communities to work together to bring about change.’ It goes on to say ‘Christian Aid believes that communities around the world must be self-reliant, community led and responsibly governed. We choose partners that share our values and put these into action. It is through love and support that we are able to provide this assistance. So thank you so much for your continued support of our work with the poorest communities on earth.’ Future Dates: June 19th and July 17th both Wednesdays in the Village Hall as usual between 10.30 am and 12 noon. On June 19th the charity to benefit from any donations will be the Ashbourne Community First Responders. On July 17th Rob and Angi Jackson will be coming with their two dogs Waldo and Benson to talk with us about Guide Dogs. Ros Hunt St Leonard's is Listening Thank you for your continued support as St Leonard's Church continues to discuss its priorities for the future and responds to the information you provided through our survey in May. The information has been really helpful and we now have another meeting on Thursday 6th June at 7pm in the village hall to which all are welcome. We hope to agree some of our priorities at this particular meeting and then we will be back in touch to let you know what they are and find out what you think. Once again, thank you for your support and we look forward to being in touch again soon. Rev'd Alan.
Unapproved Minutes Minutes of Thorpe Annual Parish Meeting held on Tuesday 7th May 2019 at 7.30pm in Thorpe Village Hall Present: Councillor A. Bock (in the Chair) Councillors D. Belton, D. Morgan, C. Garrett, L. Frith 6 Parishioners Public Participation No comments made. 1093. Apologies None. 1094. Minutes The minutes of the previous annual parish meeting held on 1st May 2018 were approved. 1095. Chairman’s Report The Chairman confirmed that there continues to be several challenges affecting Thorpe and Derbyshire. These are as follows: 1. Public toilets closing – Despite our endeavours to keep them open Derbyshire Dales District Council’s agenda for a considerable time has been to close them. This took place in May 2018. 2. British Telecom decommissioned the telephone box in October and the Parish Council purchased it for £1. The future maintenance of the telephone box and its use is to be looked at closely in the forthcoming year. 3. Roads – The roads continue to deteriorate within the village with minimal repairs/investment. 4. Broadband – The broadband via British Telecom continues to get worse but we live in hope of Fibre arriving in 2020. Achievements 1. The village signs were erected on The Old Dog public house and the bus shelter and are being used by visitors to the area and delivery drivers. 2. The precept remains unchanged at £2,250. The Chairman expressed his gratitude to the Councillors that have retired after many years of service. We are therefore very grateful to Will Smith, Andrew Wager and Chris Carr.

Minutes The minutes of the meeting held on 22nd January 2019 were approved. 1100. Ongoing Matters ● Village website – A new website is urgently required as the old website no longer functions. It is necessary to display the accounts on the website in June 2019. This gives us an opportunity to have a more interesting website with details of activities e.g. Dovedale Dash, village companies e.g. Thorpe Garage and The Old Dog, Peveril of the Peak, etc. There would also be an opportunity to display old photographs of the village. Councillor D. Morgan volunteered to work on this. ● Closure of public toilets – No news as to Derbyshire Dales District Council’s intention to sell.
● Telephone Box refurbishment – Councillor C. Garrett volunteered to seek quotes for repainting and alternative uses which are likely to be for a library and tourist information purposes. A grant of £300 has been received from Derbyshire Dales District Council via Sir Richard Fitzherbert. ● Potholes/road maintenance – A number of potholes were filled in today by the County Council. It was noted that J. Bailey within the village has met with Derbyshire County Council regarding the road situation. Early indications are that there is very little budget available to improve the roads. Councillor C. Garrett offered to keep the County Council informed of potholes and situations. ● Flooding of Digmire Lane/Hall Lane – No further progress. ● Insurance – £181.67 payable for public liability insurance and officers insurance. The new insurer is Zurich. ● Grounds Maintenance – C. Challinor will maintain the grassed areas for the same sum as last year i.e. £2,175. ● Peveril Hill BT works – Councillor A. Bock to establish British Telecom’s timing for Fibre and what improvements can be made in the short term to the very slow speeds. ● Slow down sign on Wintercroft Lane – This was discussed and noted that the County Council had previously refused to move the speed limit signs. If anything is to be done it is likely to have to be the Parish Council that undertakes it. 1101. Finances Cheques issued: None Monies received: Precept £2,250.00 Maintenance of footpaths £150.00 VAT £428.50 Telephone box grant £300.00 Balance sheet up to 7th May 2019: Current account - £5,932 Deposit account - £1,054 1102. The Annual Governance Statement for 2018/19 was considered approved and signed by resolution of the council. 1103. The unaudited accounts for 2018/19 as certified by the responsible financial officer were approved and signed by resolution of the council and will now be subject to an Internal Audit prior to being published on the council’s website. 1104. Planning Nothing to report. 1105. Correspondence All general correspondence has been circulated to the Councillors.
1106. Date of next meeting 7.30pm on Tuesday 3rd September 2019 at the Village Hall. 1107. Other Matters ● Councillor L. Frith volunteered to be the Parish Council representative on the Village Hall Committee. ● The Peak Park are requesting members from the Parish Council Councillors. Chris Carr confirmed that he wished to stand again for this position and wished for Thorpe Parish Council’s recommendation. ● The notice board on the village hall is looking fragile and needs replacing. Consideration is to be given to putting the notice board by the bus shelter on the village hall. ● The defibrillator – A replacement battery is required in August 2019. ● A “walkabout” for the Councillors in the village is to be organised in the next few weeks to identify any issues. In particular Councillor D. Morgan wishes to identify which areas are the responsibility of the Parish Council in terms of maintenance and potential liability for accidents. Meeting closed at 9pm. ____________________________________________________ Would you like to do an activity with friends? Sign up for a free taster to try out Nordic Walking. This is 1 month earlier than previous years. Many contributors commented that the end of July was really too late to get the best results from their endeavours because many plants, flowers and vegetables were past their best by the end of July. We hope to get as many villagers as possible to participate in this rewarding event. If you are interested in entering this year's Open Gardens on June 30th please email Dot or Peter on peterdot@w3z.co.uk or call us on 01335 350803 by 11th June to be included in this year's programme.
