Most of the zoo’s animals can be seen enjoying the winter season, but if you’re feeling a little chilly, warm up with a visit to the Faces of the Rainforest exhibit. New Food Finds in Town There’s no shortage of places to grab a bite in Providence and it feels like a few more options are added each year. The Stage Is Set It’s time to once again raise the curtain as live performances return to Providence. From original shows and Broadway productions to comedians and concerts, there’s something for everyone nearly every night of the week. Please check with individual venues for ticketing information and current health and safety precautions. The Providence Performing Arts Center (ppacri.org) is an architectural gem located in the heart of Downtown. From premier musical acts and Broadway shows, to comedians and even family-friendly specials, there’s always something for all types of crowds. Highlights from this upcoming season include “Hamilton,” “The Prom,” “Alton Brown Live: Beyond the Eats,” “Pretty Woman” and “RENT.” Just a few blocks away, The VETS (thevetsri.com) hosts an array of performances, including the Philharmonic, ballet, comedians and family shows. On Dec. 9 don’t miss the return of “Black Violin,” an electrifying show combining classical string arrangements with modern beats. Also in December, Festival Ballet Providence, the state’s resident ballet company, brings the holiday classic “The Nutcracker” to The VETS for the first time with a brand-new production featuring magnificent sets and costumes, plus inventive new choreography. 12
The Tony Award-winning Trinity Rep (trinityrep.com) kicks off its return to the stage with the annual performance of “A Christmas Carol.” The production is reimagined each year, so don’t skip out because you think you know the story. Featuring the talents of a resident acting company, each thoughtfully crafted season offers productions that exemplify both the intimacy and spectacle that can only be found in theater. You never know what you’re going to find at the Columbus Theatre (columbustheatre.com), a beautifully restored venue known for eclectic live performances, film screenings and community events. This season’s lineup includes incomparable comedian and actress Maria Bamford, the side-splitting interactive improv “Tinder Live! With Lane Moore,” and “Puddles Pity Party,” featuring Puddles the clown’s melancholy melodies. The Wilbury Theatre Group (thewilburygroup.org) continues to engage the community in thought- provoking conversation through original works, new spins on classics and adventurous playmaking. They’ll debut a new theater space, the Wilbury Theatre at WaterFire Arts Center, this fall where they will continue to deliver a diverse array of innovative live theater.
