Good Friday Tenebrae - April 2, 2021 at 12pm & 7pm Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church 511 Groveland Avenue, Minneapolis MN 55403
The service of Tenebrae, meaning “darkness” or
“shadows,” has been practiced by the church since
medieval times. Once a service for the monastic
community, Tenebrae later became an important part
of the worship of the common folk during Holy Week.
We join Christians of many generations throughout the
world in using the liturgy of Tenebrae.

Tenebrae is a prolonged meditation on Christ’s
suffering. Readings trace the story of Christ’s passion,
music portrays his pathos, and the power of silence and
darkness suggests the drama of this momentous day. As
lights are extinguished, we ponder the depth of Christ’s
suffering and death; we remember the cataclysmic
nature of his sacrifice as we hear the overwhelming
sound of the “strepitus;” and there in the darkness, dare
we dream to hope? Do we dare to choose love?
Welcome		Rev. Judy Zabel

Lenten Entrance

   God is light, in whom there is no darkness at all.
   Jesus Christ is the light of the world.
   And this is the judgment, that the light has come into the world,
   and we loved darkness rather than light.

Hymn No. 286 Go to Dark Gethsemane Redhead
				                                   stanzas 1, 2
           Go to dark Gethsemane, See him at the judgment hall,
      Ye that feel the tempter’s power;               Beaten, bound, reviled, arraigned;
       Your Redeemer’s conflict see, O the wormwood and the gall!
      Watch with him one bitter hour. O the pangs his soul sustained!
       Turn not from his griefs away;                 Shun not suffering, shame, or loss;
        Learn of Jesus Christ to pray. Learn of Christ to bear the cross.

                        That we to judge thee have in hate pretended?
                           By foes derided, by thine own rejected,
                                       O most afflicted.

Please respond with:
I can’t breathe; Christ have mercy on us.

Almighty God, look with mercy on your family for whom our Lord Jesus Christ was willing to be betrayed
and to be given over to the hands of sinners and to suffer death on the cross; who now lives and reigns
with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.
Amen.
