INTERNATIONAL HEMP BUILDING ASSOCIATION MISSION STATEMENT The aims of this associa*on are; To develop, promote and support the produc*on and use of all hemp based construc*on materials and their by-‐products in a sustainable and bio-‐regional manner for the benefit of the ecology and communi*es of all regions of the world.

Transi*on assump*ons • 1. Life with drama*cally lower energy consump*on is inevitable. It is beEer to be prepared that not!!! • 2. Our seElements and communi*es presently lack the resilience necessary to withstand the severe energy shocks that will accompany Peak Oil • 3. We have to act collec*vely and we have to act now. • 4. By unleashing the collec*ve genius around us to crea*vely and proac*vely design our energy descent, we can build ways of living that are more connected, more enriching and that recognize the biological limits of our planet.

LOCAL SUSTAINABLE HOMES How to make them happen in your community Chris Bird
What do we mean by “Hemp-‐building”? Firstly there can be a floor made of Hempcrete
This surrounded by a founda*on
Walls are cast with Hempcrete
This Hempcrete envelope can be extended across the roof
The roof can be addi*onally or alterna*vely insulated with Hemp fibre
Externally the structure is made weatherproof by covering with plaster or boards
The roof is of whatever is appropriate locally
Hemp/lime, Hemp/clay or just Hemp
Hemp building has relevance in all regions of the world and at every scale
Urgent need for housing supplied with Hemp, for future sustainability • Africa an example
Tradi*onal methods of construc*on are beEer suited to climate and local skills Establishing a local hemp produc*on facility and by providing the knowledge and skills to build appropriate housing using hemp, real sustainability can be achieved
Modern materials are not only unsuitable
Western technology is olen inappropriate because it has to be imported
• The IHBA aims to work for the gathering and dissemina*on of knowledge about the materials and systems from those developing and using them to those wishing to. • The IHBA will assist members developing systems both from the point of view of produc*on of the materials to their use in vernacular and new styles of architecture appropriate to their region. • The IHBA will work to educate and inform the rela*ve government and trade bodies to help in the establishment of the infrastructure necessary to create a hemp building industry throughout the interna*onal community. • The IHBA will at all *mes work to ensure that the use of such materials has the least environmental impact possible.
