GOLF scholarships International Sports Scholarship Programme Scotland’s University for Sporting Excellence
University of Stirling Golf Scholarships The R&A supported University of Stirling high performance golf programme was established in 1981. It is part of the International Sports Scholarship Programme whose alumni include Olympians, World and Commonwealth Games athletes. Stirling has won more British Universities team Championships and sent more players to the FISU World University Championships than any other institution worldwide, with many alumni currently playing on professional tours. Training and Competition Our individually tailored golf programme, for men and women, enables scholars to combine their high performance training with study for an academic degree. The weekly schedule comprises up to 10 hours coaching time and three hours fitness training with specialist staff. There is access to sports science support, including diet and nutrition, psychology, physiotherapy, lifestyle management and medical expertise. Squad members compete in Scottish and British University competitions and also take part in regular training camps abroad. Facilities The programme is based on-campus at the University Golf Centre and scholars also receive membership at the world-renowned Gleneagles Hotel with three celebrated golf courses, where team matches are played. Golfers have access to world-class training facilities, including: ii A nine-hole par-3 parkland golf course and practice centre ii 280-yard driving range ii Specialist short game area ii Video analysis teaching room ii MP Jackson Fitness Centre with aerobic area ii Strength and Conditioning Super Centre ii State-of-the-art sports science laboratories Coaching Experienced former professional golfers and PGA qualified coaches run the men’s and women’s teams. Further support services are provided by our experienced, qualified staff. Funding Selected scholars can receive financial support up to £6000 per annum to subsidise competition entry, travel and training camps. Academic Flexibility A fundamental part of the scholarships is academic flexibility to help combine study with high performance sport. This includes assessment extensions, exam deferment and study extension periods. Accommodation and Equipment Golf scholars have the opportunity to stay in on-campus accommodation and every player is provided with training and match clothing as well as essential equipment.
Apply Now Applicants must meet the normal entry requirements for study at the University of Stirling and hold a profile in national golf competitions at junior level or higher. Prospective scholars should hold a handicap of scratch or below for men and -3 or below for women. Apply by the end of February for entry the following September. Study at Stirling Flexibility and choice – Stirling has a refreshingly different approach to degrees. You get to adapt and develop your study choices as you go, combining subjects from across the University. Scholarship golfers can study full-time or part-time, in undergraduate or postgraduate degree programmes of their choice. Sport-specific programmes at the School of Sport, which make up 12% of all applications to Stirling – include: BA Sports Studies, BSc Sport and Exercise Science, MSc Sports Management and MSc Sports Coaching.
