Good news: The Treats & Reads Program is very easy to adapt to
contactless participation! The online platform allows girls to reach out to
family and friends while keeping socially distant. Girl delivery of nut and candy
product can be done safely with porch drop-offs or pick-ups. Or a customer can choose to have their
order direct shipped to them. Look for the callouts throughout this guide for tips about how girls and
troops can safely participate despite the challenges presented by Covid-19.

The Treats & Reads website is a single logon system making it a snap to use! Girls, families, and
volunteers can get started by going directly to GSOFCT’s Treats & Reads website. This guide will
help orient troop volunteers to this year’s program. The family flyer is an excellent resource for girls/
       families.

Theme • When a troop participates in the Treats & Reads Program, it is an excellent opportunity
for girls to identify their strengths, get to know the strengths of their sister Girl
Scouts, and to consider how they are brave in their everyday lives.

Top Tips for Volunteers and Quick Launch

Top tips for troop volunteers
Below are the key points for volunteers to keep in mind when girls/families are participating in the Treats & Reads
Program. Need more specifics? Check out the rest of this guide and/or GSOFCT’s Treats & Reads page.

  1
Register directly on the Treats & Reads website. Girls/families can go directly to the M2 Treats & Reads
website. No need to wait for a registration email. PRO TIP: Remind parents/guardians to have the troop
number handy BEFORE starting the registration process.

2 Online orders automatically record in the Treats & Reads website. Orders placed by customers via a girl’s
online storefront are paid for with the customer’s credit card AND flow directly into the girl’s record on the
Treats & Reads website. This means no money needs to be collected by the girl/family for these orders AND
online orders don’t need to be manually entered!

3 In-person/offline orders are entered into the girl’s online
storefront. Girls/families should enter the paper order card/offline
orders into her storefront before 11:59 p.m. on November 1. No need The Treats &

Offer all girls the opportunity to participate. The online program
is straightforward and simple for girls/families to navigate. Since
parents/guardians can enter in-person/offline sales into the online

Safety

                                  A reminder from Mama Sloth:
The safety of girls, families, volunteers continue to be our
primary concern when girls are participating in the Treats &
                                  Reads Program.
Below are the recommended steps girls, families, and volunteers take not only
to ensure girls are participating in a meaningful and appropriate manner, but
also keep girls and others in their communities healthy and safe.

                                  General safety tips
                                      • A parent/guardian must know the Girl Scout’s whereabouts when she is
participating in the program, including if and when she is utilizing the Treats &
                                        Reads website.
                                      • Girls and adults should be familiar with the neighborhoods where the Girl Scout
sells and should only participate in door-to-door sales during daylight hours.
• Girls should always wear a Girl Scout uniform, membership pin, or Girl Scout clothing when taking orders and/or
  delivering products to customers.
• Girls should not share their full name, phone number, address, or personal email address with customers who
are not trusted family or friends. An email address overseen by an adult should be used for customers to request
information or to place an additional order.

Using the internet
• Girls must read and agree to the Girl Scout Internet Safety
Pledge. The pledge can be found at girlscouts.org.
• Girls/families must review the Supplemental Safety Tips for
  Online Marketing.

Treats & Reads Program Girl Training

Girls and troops are most successful in the Treats & Reads Program when it is included
as part of a troop meeting (virtual or in-person) and is presented as fun, engaging, and
meaningful for the troop. Help your girls/families get the most out of the program by
reviewing the topics below.

Program • Distribute nut and candy order card and family information to each girl. The material can
Overview be picked up from the service unit Treats & Reads volunteer or downloaded from GSOFCT’s
                  Treats & Reads page.
                • Discuss ways (online and in-person) girls can reach out to customers. Be sure to review
safety measures, including masks and social distancing, girls should take when taking
                  in-person orders.
                • Discuss the “why, what, and how”: why girls/families should consider participating, what girls
will learn, and how the troop will benefit.
                • Encourage girls to register on the Treats & Reads website to create their online storefront.
                • Encourage girls to send at least 15 emails and consider using social media to reach
                  customers.
» Sending at least 15 emails is a key requirement for earning the Me2® Avatar patch AND the
Cookie Crossover patch (see page 9 for more details).
» Sending 15+ emails is a great way to jumpstart a Girl Scout’s Treats & Reads Program!
                • Review program dates (see calendar on page 2).
                • Review page 5 for additional information about how girls participate in Treats & Reads.
Safety Review • Girls should wear their Girl Scout clothing/uniform when taking in-person orders and/or
delivering product. Girls/adults should follow guidance from local and state public health
officials regarding wearing masks and maintaining physical distance when taking in-person
                  orders.
                • An adult should always know how and when a girl is participating in the Treats & Reads
Program, including when she is using the Treats & Reads website.
                • Girls should NEVER share their full name, address, phone number, or email address with
                  customers they/their families don’t know.
                • An adult’s contact information should be used for communicating and placing additional
                  orders.
                • See page 6 in this guide for complete safety information.
Product • Discuss the products: magazines and nut and candy items.

Customers can choose in-person delivery (same 16 items that are featured on the nut
and candy order card) or direct ship for nut and candy items (there is a wider product

» In-person: customers can choose from 16 nut and candy items.
» Care to Share: customers can make a purchase to donate Honey Roasted Peanuts to the

or at a GSOFCT service center the first week in December.
Goals and • Discuss the importance of each girl setting a goal and sharing the goal with family and
Decision friends.
Making • Have the girls decide on a troop goal (number of items sold, number of emails sent, how the
troop will use the proceeds, etc.).
                • Have the girls review the girl rewards on the nut and candy order card or from the dashboard
                  on a girls’ online storefront.
                • If the troop is Junior level or older, girls should vote (majority rules) whether to take
additional proceeds in lieu of girl rewards (see page 10 for more details).
                • Daisy and Brownie troops are required to take the girl reward proceed option.

get started with Cheddar Up, visit gsofct.org.
