This guide will help orient troop volunteers to this year’s program. Top Tips for Volunteers and Quick Launch Top tips for troop volunteers Below are the key points for volunteers to keep in mind when girls/families are participating in the Treats & Reads Program. Need more specifics? Check out the rest of this guide and/or GSOFCT’s Treats & Reads page. 1 Register directly on the Treats & Reads website. Girls/families can go directly to the M2 Treats & Reads website. No need to wait for a registration email. PRO TIP: Remind parents/guardians to have the troop number handy BEFORE starting the registration process. 2 Online orders automatically record in the Treats & Reads website. Orders placed by customers via a girl’s online storefront are paid for with the customer’s credit card AND flow directly into the girl’s record on the Treats & Reads website. This means no money needs to be collected by the girl/family for these orders AND online orders don’t need to be manually entered! 3 In-person/offline orders are entered into the girl’s online storefront. Girls/families should enter the paper order card/offline orders into her storefront before 11:59 p.m. on November 1. Why Participate in Treats & Reads? Win-win for troops and girls! The Treats & Reads Program is an integral part of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience (GSLE) with financial literacy at its core. Use the Treats & Reads Program as a ready-to-go early fall meeting, whether it is in-person or virtual. » Use M2’s 2020 Fall Product Activity Guide for ideas to introduce the theme and mascot to the girls (available on GSOFCT’s Treats & Reads page). » Younger girls can Build a Sloth and share their creation at the next in-person or virtual meeting. » Older girls can use the What Would You Do? activity to get their creative juices flowing about how they would spend their day if they were a sloth. Girls can research fun facts about sloths and then share how they are most sloth-like with the troop! • Troops earn proceeds to help fund their troop activities AND may qualify to earn a credit to a Girl Scout shop as a troop reward (see page 10 for additional information). PRO TIP: Troops that participate in Treats & Reads may be eligible to earn an additional 2¢/package during the 2020-2021 Girl Scout Cookie Program (excluding 2020 Election Day Booth Sales). COOL FACT: More than 350 troops qualified for the 2¢ bonus in the 2020 cookie program earning an average of an additional $35.00. How do girls benefit? • Girls gain experience in the five skills of the Girl Scout product sales programs (goal setting, decision making, people skills, money management, and business ethics). • Girls gain experience in setting goals (see page 7 for more info about how to get this conversation going with girls). » Girls can use the girl rewards to help set individual goals OR they can use their success in last year’s Gaining program to help determine their goals for this new skills, year’s program. helping my troop, and learning » Girls work with their sister Girl Scouts to decide on about sloths? troop goals. How do Girls Participate? Girls can ask friends and family to purchase nut and candy items and/or magazine subscriptions. NOTE: Online orders placed by customers are automatically recorded and should NOT be manually entered. Once the Girl Scout has registered for this year’s Treats & Reads program on the Treats & Reads website, she can: » Create a one-of-a-kind, totally personalized avatar! Girl Scouts can choose their avatar’s features, including eyes, skin color, hair color/length, body type, favorite shoes. and accessories, such as sunglasses and tiara. » Set up her online storefront to include her personal goals, the troop’s goals, upload a photo, and record a video message in her own voice to ask customers for their support. » Email customers and obtain the link to her site to post on social media (see page 6 for social media guidelines). » Download business cards with the link to her online storefront to distribute to family members and friends. » Select reward items. » Record in-person nut and candy orders from her order card. Safety A reminder from Mama Sloth: The safety of girls, families, volunteers continue to be our primary concern when girls are participating in the Treats & Reads Program. Below are the recommended steps girls, families, and volunteers take not only to ensure girls are participating in a meaningful and appropriate manner, but also keep girls and others in their communities healthy and safe. General safety tips • A parent/guardian must know the Girl Scout’s whereabouts when she is participating in the program, including if and when she is utilizing the Treats & Reads website. • Girls and adults should be familiar with the neighborhoods where the Girl Scout sells and should only participate in door-to-door sales during daylight hours. • Girls should always wear a Girl Scout uniform, membership pin, or Girl Scout clothing when taking orders and/or delivering products to customers. • Girls should not share their full name, phone number, address, or personal email address with customers who are not trusted family or friends. An email address overseen by an adult should be used for customers to request information or to place an additional order. Using the internet • Girls must read and agree to the Girl Scout Internet Safety Pledge. Posting on community Facebook pages or resale sites such as Facebook Marketplace is NOT permitted. Staying safe • Adults must accompany Girl Scout Daisies, Brownies, and Juniors when taking orders or delivering product. • Girl Scout Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors must inform an adult about where they will be when participating in the Treats & Reads Program and should always use the buddy system. • Girls/adults should take all precautions, including wearing masks and maintaining adequate physical distance, when taking in-person orders and delivering product. • A plan to safeguard money should be made in advance. Girl Scout Daisies should not handle money. 6
Treats & Reads Program Girl Training Girls and troops are most successful in the Treats & Reads Program when it is included as part of a troop meeting (virtual or in-person) and is presented as fun, engaging, and meaningful for the troop. Help your girls/families get the most out of the program by reviewing the topics below. Program • Distribute nut and candy order card and family information to each girl. Be sure to review safety measures, including masks and social distancing, girls should take when taking in-person orders. • Discuss the “why, what, and how”: why girls/families should consider participating, what girls will learn, and how the troop will benefit. • Encourage girls to register on the Treats & Reads website to create their online storefront. • Encourage girls to send at least 15 emails and consider using social media to reach customers. » Sending at least 15 emails is a key requirement for earning the Me2® Avatar patch AND the Cookie Crossover patch (see page 9 for more details). » Sending 15+ emails is a great way to jumpstart a Girl Scout’s Treats & Reads Program! • Review program dates (see calendar on page 2). • Review page 5 for additional information about how girls participate in Treats & Reads. Safety Review • Girls should wear their Girl Scout clothing/uniform when taking in-person orders and/or delivering product. Girls/adults should follow guidance from local and state public health officials regarding wearing masks and maintaining physical distance when taking in-person orders. • An adult should always know how and when a girl is participating in the Treats & Reads Program, including when she is using the Treats & Reads website. • Girls should NEVER share their full name, address, phone number, or email address with customers they/their families don’t know. • An adult’s contact information should be used for communicating and placing additional orders. • See page 6 in this guide for complete safety information. Product • Discuss the products: magazines and nut and candy items. Overview • Review how customers can purchase products: » Online: customers can purchase/renew magazine subscriptions and nut and candy items. Customers can choose in-person delivery (same 16 items that are featured on the nut and candy order card) or direct ship for nut and candy items (there is a wider product selection for direct ship orders and customers will pay a shipping fee). » In-person: customers can choose from 16 nut and candy items. » Care to Share: customers can make a purchase to donate Honey Roasted Peanuts to the American Red Cross, CT Chapter and Foodshare. Care to Share purchases can be made online or in-person on the nut and candy order card. • Nut and candy items ordered online for in-person delivery or via the nut and candy order card will be available for the troop to pick up from the service unit Treats & Reads volunteer or at a GSOFCT service center the first week in December.
