This year, 36 learners were selected from Parktown High School for Girls, to exhibit their science expo projects at the online Gauteng Provincial round of the competition. The standard of projects was particularly high this year, according to provincial co-ordinator of the Eskom Expo, Raven Motsewabangwe.

Cultural News SHAKESPEARE FILM FESTIVAL Report by Teacher-in-charge, Miss Doust On Saturday, 11 September, our girls performed their play, The Taming of the Shrew, for the annual Shakespeare Schools' Festival. The learners performed at the Joburg Theatre to a small audience. They had an absolute blast. Well done to the entire cast and crew for their exceptional hard work over the last few months. DEBATING Report by Teacher-in-charge, Mr Ciric On the 11th and 12th September, the Parktown senior and junior debating teams participated at the Gauteng Schools' Debating Board tournament. The girls performed incredibly well (seniors ranking 2nd in the province, while the juniors ranked 13th overall). Both teams will progress to the knockout rounds in October. The girls and coaches are to be commended for their excellent work ethic and for these superb results.
Please note that due to Covid, and in line with current restrictions, only 200 people will be allowed in the audience and it is first come, first serve. Sport News CONGRATULATIONS Congratulations to Kate Gordan, who has been selected for the final Southern Gauteng U18 B Hockey Team after training with the squad for the past few weeks. This is a fantastic achievement. Well done Kate. Kate Gordan TENNIS On Tuesday, 7 September, we hosted St Dominic’s for a friendly Tennis match. On a beautiful afternoon, our Tennis players enjoyed their first inter-school match in about a year. They played well and enjoyed a change-up of doubles partners which proved to be a fruitful experience. Overall, we lost 41 – 22. Well done to all the players and good luck for the upcoming league starting on 21 September 2021.
SOCCER Our Soccer Teams have kicked off their season with a bang. The four teams have been working hard in their training sessions and are enjoying being back on the field together after a very long wait over the past year. On Tuesday, 7 September, we hosted Jeppe High School for Girls. Jeppe is always a tough competitive game and it was a great way to start the season. The U15 A Team drew their match 1-1. This was an exciting match where the team managed to settle into a rhythm and started to get to know each other on the field. The First Team won their match 2-1 against the Jeppe First Team. This was a gripping match; both Goal-Keepers had to be on their toes throughout the match. A special mention to Jessica Chukwuyem who played her first match as Goal- Keeper for the First Team and did extremely well. U15 A Team half-time talk On Thursday, 9 September, we hosted Greenside High School. Our Second Team played first against the Greenside First Team and played their socks off, winning the match 5-1. A special mention to Zoe Devine who scored 2 goals for the team! The U15 B Team went on to play the same team, as Greenside could only field one team on the day. What a fantastic result; 1-1 from our U15 B Team. This was their first match together and their first match in high school. The talent from the junior group this year is very exciting and our coaches are extremely excited to work with the players going forward. First Team Soccer players supporting the juniors
Parktown Fast 5’s Netball and Hockey 5’s League On Friday, 10 September, we hosted the first round of the Parktown 5’s League with great success. The schools that joined us on the day were very excited to be back at it, especially after the winter season being cut short due to regulations earlier in the year. The league has been designed to be a friendly fun environment with no pressure on results and no winner. Friday afternoons the seniors get to show off their skills against other schools and clubs. Tuesday afternoons the juniors get a chance to play some competitive sport, some for the first time in their high school career due to the last two winter seasons being in the peak of Covid-19. Each school is given a designated space to relax between their matches to limit the amount of contact between schools. The first aiders were fantastic on the day, strapping and plastering any injuries. Jehan Elmedany and Grace van den Berg were our local DJ’s making sure the environment was festive with music playing throughout the afternoon. Thank you to Mrs Pautz and Mrs Nkosi for all their effort in making sure this league is a success. We look forward to the next 3 weeks of fun hockey and netball. Thank you to Mr Helling who has taken some very nice action photo’s of our hockey girls and shared them with the team. The fixtures can be found on the D6 Communicator “Resources – Sport”. TOUCH RUGBY AND SOFTBALL Our Softball Team continues with their training, sharpening their skills and hand-eye coordination, while our Touch Rugby players are well into their pre-season for the second half of the year, getting fit again and fine-tuning their knowledge of the game. TOTALSPORTS TotalSports has been very kind to donate two beautiful brand new gazebos to the school. We are extremely grateful as at sporting events gazebo’s are in endless need. We used them for the first time at the Parktown 5’s League on Friday, 10 September. Thank you TotalSports. The Sport Corner Brought to you by the Sport Portfolio, written by Erin Helling In this week's edition of the Sport Corner, read all about the continuous buzz in our sporting world, including the start-up of matches for many of our sports! It has been a very successful two weeks of sport at Parktown. Much to the delight of everyone, many of our sports including netball, soccer, hockey and water polo were able to start matches again! All these teams have loved being back in action in a more competitive environment and have played exceptionally well. With that being said...5 aside netball and hockey matches have been underway at Parktown and it's wonderful seeing our courts and AstroTurf full! Thank you to everyone who made it happen. This report from Karabo in Grade 10 emphasises just how happy everyone is about not only matches starting again but also about regular afternoon practices that give everyone some normality. "I'm happy that netball is back because it gets my mind off of school and our physical health is so important. I've learnt that working with other people is way better than working alone and that winning isn't everything but rather having fun in that moment is what matters. Sometimes it can be overwhelming for me because I feel like I don't play my best.... but that makes me work harder and push myself more." The water polo girls played their first match of the year on Saturday and the first team worked really well together and won their game. The juniors, most of whom had never played a match before, also impressively won their game! "I really enjoyed playing on Saturday! I loved being back with my teammates and I really loved how we all played so well together as a team!" - Alayna Badat. The cross country team is now offering Icey's to all who participate in the time trial on Tuesdays! There is a 2.5km and 5km option and all are welcome. Come show them what you’ve got!
Spin on Sport Touch Rugby is a sport that will test your limits. In touch rugby, you are taught how to be resilient, calm and confident. Touch is a game of opportunities. Every set of 6 touches is a chance for you to create something beautiful. All you need to play touch is an open mind and a determined mind-set. Scoring tries in touch is the most exhilarating feeling that any player can experience. Touch is a team sport! Remember there's no “I" in "team". With that being said, it provides a platform for one to form new relationships and to have a place to grow. The rules of touch rugby are very simple. All you have to do is tap the ball to start and remember to never pass the ball in front of you. Listening to the referee and your coaches is very important as they will help you navigate your way in the game. When in doubt, come to Touch!!! Left: Rodha Olivier
