Box 6 Gazelle, CA 96034 Phone: (530) 435-2321 Fax: (530) 435-2298 Parental Involvement Policy GOAL To ensure that parents and community members have the opportunity to assist and support the educational process by participating in decision making and through volunteer activities. It is our desire to have parents and community members have the opportunity to be an integral part of our students learning process. A. Involvement Parents will be encouraged to become involved in the joint development and review of the Single School Plan for Achievement through participation in School Site Council Meetings and goal setting meetings. The school will increase parent/community involvement through school programs and activities created and maintained to improve student academic achievement and school performance by participation of parents in the School Site Council (SSC), Sports Committee, Special School events, and as classroom volunteers. Parent feedback will continue to be incorporated through local needs assessments surveys, annual evaluations and discussions at meetings. Parents will always be invited to participate in school / community events such as awards assemblies, fund-raising events, Parent/Teacher conferences, Back to School Night, Open House, field trips, athletic events, graduation ceremonies, Holiday Programs, and any other special events. B. Communications It is very important to the success of students that two-way communication between families and school is in place. The following documents are sent home on a yearly, monthly, or weekly basis: The GIFTS (Gazelle Information from Teachers and School) newsletter is sent home weekly. A weekly breakfast and lunch menu is included in the weekly GIFTS. A calendar of important dates and events is sent home yearly or as needed. Teachers hand out yearly expectations to students at the beginning of the school year. Parent-Student Handbooks are updated and handed out yearly and are available at the school website http://gazelleuesd.cyberschool.com/. Letters, phone calls, progress reports and informal and formal conferences are held concerning students’ behavior, student progress and, state and local standards, test scores, work samples, and instructional goals. The administrator, staff and parents work effectively toward achieving our long-range goals. 1

Training Gazelle Elementary School will provide information for parents regarding parenting classes. Additionally School Site Counsel and parent meetings will update and train parents during council meetings regarding budgetary concerns, District and State Standards, Test Results, the importance of school attendance, standards-based education, etc. Program goals and evaluation are discussed and on-going including an annual evaluation of the content and effectiveness of our parental involvement policy and then use those findings of the evaluation to design a more effective policy. Orientation for incoming Kindergarten students will be held the spring before they will attend school. A bridge program to high School will take place each spring. D. Community Resources Community resources are encouraged to enrich our school program. Field trips offer real-life practical experiences for students. Our students take field trips into the community to visit and participate in activities at the high school, college, library, museum, hospital, Siskiyou County Environmental Area, Shasta valley Wildlife Area, and other sites. Gazelle Elementary School will continue to reach out to the community of volunteers. Parents are asked to help in the library. Parents volunteer in each classroom, at school events, and participate at fund-raisers. E. Parent Pledge and School Compact We believe that an important part of a child’s growth depends on developing self-discipline and understanding that school rules are adopted for the safety and benefit of the students. These rules are to be recognized and obeyed by all at all times. It is the belief of our school that this kind of self-discipline is the beginning of a responsible and law-abiding adult citizen in our community. The Gazelle Parent-Student Handbook is sent home at the beginning of each school year to all students/parents. Parent Involvement The parents’ role at Gazelle Elementary School is very important. The effectiveness of a school depends on the cooperative efforts of the parents, teachers, administrator and students. We encourage and expect you to participate in parent-teacher conferences, meetings, and to support various activities. You can be involved in other areas by supporting the following: 2

First your child will benefit when you help at the school, your child gets the message that you feel learning is important. 2. You will get to know your child/children’s teachers. Knowing the teacher makes it easier to ask for help when your child needs help. 3. The school will benefit. You will share what you know with others. 4. The community will benefit. As you learn more about what happens you will share with others. 5. Volunteering is easy. We will be glad to train you. There are things you can do at school, at home, on field trips. 6. Volunteering is satisfying. You will meet other parents. You may learn new skills. It may make you feel good. Room Parents Parents willing to volunteer in classrooms for party preparation should contact the teacher. If a room parent comes forward, he or she will be responsible for arranging class parties. Room parents may ask other parents to assist in coordinating refreshments and activities. Parties are usually held at Halloween, Christmas, and Easter. If parents would like to bring refreshments on their child’s birthday, they must first arrange to do so with the teacher. Birthday refreshments are to be passed out immediately following lunch or immediately preceding departure from school. Classroom Visitations You are urged to visit the school, meet your child’s teacher and become acquainted. You may make arrangements through the teacher or the principal. Periodic twenty-minute visits are recommended rather than visits of long duration. We ask your cooperation with the following regulations: Sign in and obtain a visitors Permit at the office Enter and leave the room as quietly as possible Do not converse with the teacher during class instructional time Please limit visits to 20 minutes Preschoolers are not permitted as visitors No child under 18 years of age may visit without an adult (High School Students may not hang out. Please do not request permission for under aged friends/relatives to visit the class for the day (state regulations). Gazelle Sports Committee The Sports Committee believes that the character of young people is strengthened by participation in extracurricular activities. 3

Box 6 Gazelle, CA 96034 Phone: (530) 435-2321 Fax: (530) 435-2298 School Site Council This council consists of elected parents, teachers, classified staff, and the principal. It makes decisions and recommendations in the following areas: The council assesses reviews and makes recommendations regarding the implementation of the Single School Plan for Student Achievement (SSP), School Wellness Policy, Parental Involvement Policy, and other school activities requiring parental involvement and input. Through input gathered from annual surveys and meetings, the SSC decides when and where modifications and revisions should be made in order to maximize student achievement. The council: Monitors, evaluates and revises the SSP Plans and schedules staff development activities Plans school activities Plans, reviews and supervises the following budgets: School-Base Coordinated Plan (resource 7250) Title I (resource 3010) Title II, Part A (resource 4035) Title V (resource 4110) Council elections are held in September of the new school year. Notices of all meetings are sent home. Curriculum Gazelle Elementary School Curriculum has been developed according to the California State Education Code. For grade level we focus on skills specified in the “standards: and the scope and sequence of California State Framework. Homework Homework is a necessary part of each student’s educational program. It’s success depends greatly on the cooperation between home and school. Homework is given to allow the student time to complete or expand a classroom assignment. It develops good work habits and a sense of responsibility. Homework is assigned Monday through Thursday. Extended assignments may be assigned and scheduled over a period of time. Students are encouraged to take part in the After School Program where assistance can take place by instructional aides who are all NCLB qualified and the sight director who is a credentialed teacher. Tutoring is also available with the classroom teachers. 4

Box 6 Gazelle, CA 96034 Phone: (530) 435-2321 Fax: (530) 435-2298 Parent Conferences/Progress Reports Parents will have an opportunity to have formal conferences scheduled at the end of the first and third quarter and as needed during the school year. We encourage and recommend conferences. We feel they should be held privately, without interruption, and by appointment. 5
