2 TG4 ALL IRELAND SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP SEMI FINALS TEACHTAIREACHT ÓN UACHTARÁN F earaim fáilte is fiche romhaibh anseo go Páirc an Chrócaigh chuig Cluichí Leath-Cheannais Sinsir na hÉireann i bPeil na mBan TG4 2019. I am very pleased to welcome you to Croke Park for this afternoon’s historic TG4 All-Ireland Senior Ladies Football Championship semi-finals. For the very first time, our Senior semi-finals are being staged at this magnificent and historic venue. The first game on our double-bill is the meeting of Connacht rivals Galway and Mayo at 2pm, followed by the clash of Cork and Dublin at 3.45pm, which is a repeat of last year’s Final between the counties, which attracted a record attendance of 50,141 to this great venue. Mayo and Galway have met already met twice in this year’s Championship, with Galway eventually prevailing at the Gaelic Grounds in a Connacht Final replay, after the sides had finished level at Elvery’s MacHale Park in Castlebar, following a thrilling game. When they last met in the All-Ireland series, Galway prevailed at the All-Ireland Quarter-Final stage last year. Mayo, the Finalists in 2017, will have their sights set on getting back to the big stage once again, while Galway are targeting what would be a very first Final appearance since 2005. The scene is set for a cracking game, with both counties high on confidence. Galway came through the stern challenge of Waterford at the Quarter-Final stage, as Mayo accounted for Armagh, who had beaten Cork in their previous outing. The ultimate prize today is a place in the Final at Croke Park on Sunday, the 15th of September, and the winners of today’s semi-final will meet Dublin or Cork for the Brendan Martin Cup. Dublin and Cork renew acquaintances following last year’s memorable Final between the counties. They’ve met in four of the last five TG4 All-Ireland Senior Finals, but now meet at the penultimate stage of the 2019 competition. Cork are the reigning Lidl National League Division 1 Champions, and they beat Dublin after extra-time in the League Semi-Final, in what was an epic game at Nowlan Park in Kilkenny. That’s the last competitive fixture between these two excellent teams and if we get the same levels of entertainment and excitement that were on show back in April, we are in for a treat. In the Championship, Dublin made it eight successive Leinster Senior titles before topping their qualifier group, and then accounting for Kerry at the All- Ireland Quarter-Final stage. Cork retained their Munster crown, had a blip against Armagh in the qualifiers, but regrouped to see off Tyrone in impressive fashion in their recent Quarter-Final. I would like to wish all four counties, their supporters and respective management teams the very best of luck, ahead of what promise to be great displays of Ladies Gaelic Football. A special word of thanks, also, to TG4, our Championship sponsors, for their continued support and coverage. We have already enjoyed some wonderful games throughout the summer and now that we are just three weeks away from the TG4 All-Ireland Finals at Croke Park on Sunday, the 15th of September, I would appeal to supporters of all counties to make it back here for the highlight of our annual calendar. TG4 All-Ireland Finals day is an event not to be missed and two of the four counties in action here today will be back in three weeks in the quest for the coveted silverware. I’d also like to compliment the county boards and volunteers for their work in ensuring that days like today become a reality. A word of thanks also to our hosts today at Croke Park. To be in the position to stage our TG4 All-Ireland Senior Championship Semi-Finals here is another huge step forward for our Association. I’m sure that we will get two memorable games to mark the occasion. Bain taitneamh as na cluichí. Máire Ní Icí Uachtarán Senior Semi Finals 2019.indd 2 21/08/2019 17:07
TG4 ALL IRELAND SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP SEMI FINALS FOCAL ÓN URRA 3 F áilte is fiche romhaibh go Páirc an Chrócaigh, don chéad uair riamh ar reáchtáladh na cluichí leathcheannais i gCraobhacha TG4 i bPeil na mBan sa cheannáras. Féasta peile romhainn - Maigh Eo i gcoinne Gaillimh agus Baile Átha Cliath i gcoinne Corcaigh. Welcome to this historical double-header, the first time the LGFA TG4 All- Ireland Senior semi-finals have been played in Croke Park, where we are in for a feast of top class football - Galway v Mayo and Cork v Dublin. The first semi-final between Mayo and Galway proves to be an epic encounter. A repeat of the fabulous Connacht Finals between the counties, with Galway prevailing in a replay at the Gaelic Grounds in Limerick, after the sides drew in a thrilling encounter at Elvery's MacHale Park in Castlebar. The sides also met at the All-Ireland quarter-final stage last year, with Galway coming out on top before losing out to Dublin in the semi-finals. Mayo were beaten finalists in 2017, and are hoping to get back to another final, while a win for Galway would send them through to a first final since 2005, when they were defeated by Cork. Current title holders Dublin are going for three-in-a-row and this semi-final against Cork is a repeat of the 2018 Final, which was played out in front of a record 50,141 attendance at Croke Park. These two counties have contested four of the last five TG4 All-Ireland Senior Finals, but now they meet at the semi- final stage for the right to face Mayo or Galway on September 15th. Dublin beat Kerry and Cork overcame the challenge of Tyrone at the quarter-final stage. TG4 is extremely proud once more to be the main sponsors for the 2019 LGFA All-Ireland Ladies Football Championship. The comprehensive coverage we give to the games – at all levels – show the importance that TG4 places on this wonderful sport and we are extremely proud of the wonderful partnership that has been built between the LGFA and TG4 over the years. Over the course of eight weekends, TG4 are bringing the very best action from 18 fixtures in a revamped championship to our own TV channel and worldwide on the TG4 Player, our YouTube channel and on Facebook Live. All culminating at Croke Park on Sunday, September 15th when the TG4 All-Ireland Junior, Intermediate and Senior Champions will be crowned. Viewers can keep up with all the action on social media @SpórtTG4 as well, where the #properfan campaign has contributed to a surge in interest in the games. TG4 is also delighted to be supporting the ‘20 x 20 - Women in Sport’ initiative, which is aiming to increase the profile of women’s sport at all levels. Through our very successful partnership with LGFA and Lidl, TG4 is extremely proud that we can help to give ladies football the prominence it deserves. Mar sin, bainigí sult as an imirt agus guímid gach rath orthu siúd ar fad atá páirteach ar aon bhealach. Alan Esslemont Ard-Stiúrthóir TG4 Senior Semi Finals 2019.indd 3 21/08/2019 17:07
4 TG4 ALL IRELAND SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP SEMI FINALS CAPTAIN'S Q&A The Captain’s Table Galway's Tracey Leonard Q : How excited are you about the prospect of today’s game against Mayo? A : Any day you get to play an All-Ireland semi-final is always going be a very exciting day. They don't come around too often, so you have to make the most of them when you get there. Q : What are your thoughts on Mayo and the challenge that they present? A : Mayo have always been a top side with great drive, talent and ambition. We will need to be at the top of our game to overcome them. Q : A Final place at Croke Park on September 15 is on offer for the winners. Is this in the Q : How do you assess Galway’s season to date? back of your mind or is all focus on this game? A : It’s been a very progressive season to date. We reached the Lidl National League A : To be honest, it’s one game at a time. That has been our motto from the outset, so this game will be no different. Division 1 Final, but came up short on the day. In the Connacht Championship, we needed two outings to get past Mayo but we really dug deep on the second day, which really shows the Q : How good is it for the team to have the prospect of playing in front of the TG4 cameras, and with Croke Park hosting the All- character of this bunch. Ireland semi-finals for the very first time? Q : How important is it to have had previous experience of playing in big games, when you’re preparing for a fixture of this magnitude? A : It's massive for our group, no one within our team has ever played here. I think it's everyone's dream growing up to play there. A : I don't think it's the ultimate, however it probably does help in relation to nerves. Allowing the semi-finals to be played at Croke Park Sometimes, I think too much emphasis on big gives exposure and inspiration to more girls to games can get inside players’ heads. At the end play there. of the day, it's a simple game. Senior Semi Finals 2019.indd 4 21/08/2019 17:07
