From the OLA President Dear Old Lauristonians, With COVID-19 ever present in our lives we continue to find new and creative ways to unite with friends, family, work colleagues near and far so we can maintain important human connections. Together with the School, the OLA Committee knows how important it is to create relevant pathways, events, and programs for alumnae to continue to connect. In the past few months: We have launched the inaugural OLA Fellowship that has sparked much interest within our community. We have been fortunate enough to welcome face to face many leaders of our school at our ‘Captains Evening’ in the hall at Lauriston. This was a wonderful event thoroughly enjoyed by many. Check out the OLA Instagram and Facebook pages for great photos of the night. We are also thrilled to welcome our newly formed choir called The Huntingtower Singers led by Suzie Hill (1969) - this choir has sung at several alumnae and school events bringing magnificent music and another OL connection to our events. The annual OLA AGM was again a ZOOM meeting and it was lovely to see so many new faces and regular stakeholders attend. A new OLA Netball team is currently being formed - we intend for this team (or teams!) to play with the same style, sportsmanship, and determination they had at School! We are planning to launch an OLA Singapore Chapter soon, as well as support an OLA UK Chapter event (pending restrictions of course). OLA merchandise is being snapped up - head to the OLA website for your purchases. The umbrellas will sell out! On Friday 3 September, the annual ‘Huntingtower Luncheon’ will be held at The Glasshouse, Olympic Park. Current and past parents and alumnae will be invited to this great event that will be a sell out. We will once again
be naming tables to honour members of our alumnae who have supported and volunteered at the School in recent times. Finally, I am so proud to work with the OLA Committee. We are a diverse group of women who all contribute to the School in a variety of ways. I would like to acknowledge the contributions of Pip Duncan (1990), Fiona Finster (1991) and Juliette Tan (1984) who have recently concluded their time on the Committee after volunteering for over 7 years. Pip, Fi and Juliette are not only great friends, but they are true OLA contributors. They are eloquent, hard working, and have all been there for meetings, the strategy days and helping to increase greater OLA engagement across the globe. I am indebted to each of them for their advice, their tireless commitment and passion for the OLA for such a long period of time. Their contributions will continue to help alumnae for generations to come. Thank you Pip, Fi and Juliette. Stay safe, stay well, and let's keep in touch! Warmest regards, Anna Wilson (1990) President, Old Lauristonians' Association OLA Committee: Lisa McLellan (1981), Caroline Morrison (1984), Molly Temay (2010), Claudette Leeming (1991), Steph Phillips (2004), Amanda Smith (1993), Sarah Smith (1989), Alex Harvey (2002), Caroline Ramsden (2010), Xing Zhang (2000), Rachel Irons (1989), Melanie Davey (2004), Charley Lupson (2015), Steph Aitken (2015), Jacqui Jiang (2015). The OLA warmly welcomes past staff of Lauriston to register to the OLA website. Past staff can register to the OLA website using their preferred personal email address. All past staff can stay connected to each other, to their former students, and to the School through the Past Staff Portal within the OLA website. Past staff will also start receiving 'Beyond the Fig Tree' and will be kept up to date with School and community news. We look forward to staying connected with our past Lauriston staff, who have contributed to the School's 120-year history. EKC Luncheon In April we launched a Gifts in Will Week@Lauriston to celebrate the giving spirit and generosity of our community and their gifts, which have helped the School to educate generations of accomplished women. The significant part of these celebrations was the Elizabeth Kirkhope Circle (EKC) annual luncheon. The EKC was established to honour benefactors who have chosen to support the school directly through a gift in their will. The luncheon was held at the RACV Club in the city and attended by current bequestors, their families and many Lauriston past students and friends.
We thanked our past, current and future bequestors and shared our gratitude for their generous gifts, their loyalty to the school, and their foresight in giving to the future of girls’ education. read more OLA Merchandise... Susan Calamassi (Stewart, 1964) Although it is many years since Susan left Lauriston and Australia, she remains very attached and extremely proud of her roots. She has also been lucky enough to maintain contact with many of her friends from the Class of 1964, though she says that it is becoming more difficult, the older they all get. She has tried to keep track of most of them during these awful times of the Pandemic, but, understandably she is finding this increasingly challenging. Susan has asked that It would be wonderful, from time to time, to receive news about how the ‘girls’ in her year are getting on. Susan now lives permanently in the UK, because her two daughters and their families are there. Susan was recently on the local Parish Council (Town Council), as well as the Church Council, which has kept her busy. She says that this is probably a good thing because COVID has made it impossible to go up to London to visit connections there. Susan and her husband Mario are lucky that they have a home with a nice garden so they have not actually been confined indoors all these months.
She understands that this has been a big challenge for millions of city- dwellers. Susan LOVES reading 'Beyond the Fig Tree' and being able to keep in wider-touch through this publication. She sends her love to all Lauristonians, present and past, and wants to send a message to keep encouraging young, Australian women to strive to be the best at whatever they chose to do. Susan recollects that women have an abundance of opportunities today, while in her generation, they were more limited. She has always urged her daughters to reach for the sky and will do so with her small granddaughter. In the photo above, Susan is pictured standing centre in the trio on the right of the picture. To Susan's left, with her head turned away from the camera she recognises her best friend Jenny Stewardson (Walpole, 1964). Susan also recognises Paula McKenzie (Johnson, 1964), sitting down second from the right. On the far left on the end is Cynthia Rosen (1964) and next to her, Susan believes it is Ann Chisholm (O'Connor, 1964). Susan suspects that the girl who appears to be talking to Paula (who is second from the right sitting down) is Susan Speirs (Rodd, 1964). Susan is amazed to see the image that was taken in 1959. Susan sends her deep love and affection to her friends from 1964 and that when the world starts to return to normal, she hopes to see her old gang who used to come to the UK in the Summer months. She hopes they are all well and that they remember 'Stewpot'! NB: If you recognise any of the other girls in the photo, please email ola@lauriston.vic.edu.au. Captains' Corner.... This year Lauriston celebrates 120 years of empowering young women through education. The Irving sisters founded Lauriston with the vision of offering girls a well- rounded education which provided opportunities for academic achievement, sport, the arts, debating and public speaking, and outdoor education. This vision continues today. As we look to the future, we are focused on providing future generations of Lauriston girls with the educational programs and sports and learning facilities they will need to prepare them for their future. We invite you to support future generations and celebrate your family’s connection with Lauriston by making a tax-deductible gift in support of these facilities.
