From the Desk of President Daniel Tannhauser Happy Spring! While we were able to escape the snow and cold in December and most of January, Old Man Winter sure did remind us of how cold and snowy winters in the Midwest can be. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Superintendent of Public Works Joseph Spain and his Public Works crew for clearing our streets of over 30 inches of snow that fell in just three weeks. This, in addition to handling over 30 water breaks since December 1, 2020. Job well done Joe and team! The Spring season has always been associated with rebirth and growth. The trees begin budding, tulips and daffodils begin poking through the earth and our lawns begin to show signs of green. The Village of Norridge is also showing signs of new growth - development growth. The shell of the building at the site of the old K-Mart property has been completed, and we are eagerly awaiting the turnover of the spaces to the new tenants of this development. While we have all been speculating what is coming into that space, until the developers are ready to release the names of the stores, we just have to continue to be patient. On March 11th, I attended the ground breaking for the new Caputo’s Fresh Market that will occupy a large portion of the new development at 4400 N Harlem Avenue. In addition, I attended the ribbon cutting of the Blue Gems Swim School at the corner of Oleander and Irving Park Road, the site of the former Olson Rugs Store. And, as you can see below, Harlem Irving Plaza has some exciting news to share..... DICK’S Sporting Goods is opening at the HIP The Harlem Irving Plaza Management team is extremely excited to announce the newest addition to our shopping center. DICK’S Sporting Goods is planning to open this Fall on the upper level of HIP’s newly redeveloped section! The new store will boast approximately 47,000 square feet and will offer customers convenient access from inside the shopping center, as well as exterior access from HIP’s parking lot. For more information regarding DICK’S Sporting Goods, please visit their website at www.dickssportinggoods.com. Village of Norridge 4000 N. Community Events As of the deadline of this newsletter, current Phase 4 mitigation prohibits gatherings of over 50 people. We are currently in discussion as to the fate of our annual Memorial Day Observation, Car Show, Flag Day Retirement Ceremony and Touch-a-Truck events. While we will be very disappointed if we are unable to hold these events again this year, the health and welfare of the attendees has to remain of the utmost concern to us. If Governor Pritzker, the IDPH and CDC relaxes the mitigation, or moves us into Phase 5, and it is possible to hold one or all of these events, we will do so. Please consult our website, Facebook page and future issues of this newsletter for the latest information on our community events. Safety Reminder from Norridge Police Department Spring and Summer are times when distraction burglaries are more common. Offenders try to distract you at the door or lure you out of the house in order for an accomplice to enter your home and search for cash and valuables. Many times they use vehicles with no clear identification of the services they are providing. These burglaries typically target our older population. Norridge does not permit unsolicited contractors to go door to door without a permit and ID. Village inspectors and water department personnel will always have a Norridge ID, uniform shirt and marked vehicles with Village logos. They usually try to reach you by phone prior to coming to your house. If you have any concerns about why a person is at your door, don’t open the door and contact 911 and request an officer for the suspicious person. Let us all help each other and keep an eye on our neighbors and neighborhood. Lawn Irrigation Systems If you have a lawn irrigation system, the Reduced Pressure Backflow Preventer (RPZ) must be tested annually by a licensed plumber with a Cross Connection Control Device Inspector’s license (CCCDL). It is advantageous to you to have the device tested in early spring when the system is being turned on. All tests must be completed and submitted to BSI by your due date. If you decide to reconnect a previously inactive system, contact the Water Department at 708-453-0319. The RPZ must be tested before you start using the system and then annually by a licensed plumber with a CCCDL license. Sprinkling Regulations No water shall be used for sprinkling gardens or lawns between 12:00 noon and 6:00 P.M. from May 15th through September 15th.
