I
hope you and your families enjoyed our Father’s Day brunch and had even more
fun solving the Murder Mystery event we held at the end of last month. If you
liked those events, please let us know as we plan for other events later this year.
Next up is our July 4th weekend with live entertainment on both Friday and Sunday,
BBQ, Bocci, and fun for everyone! Later this month is our Hawaiian Luau, with more
great food from our Chef and live entertainment. Please continue to make

reservations any time you’d like to visit the Club, as we are much busier than we’ve
been. When you make a reservation, we can be better prepared for your visit and
make sure you get the very best service.
Summer at CCYC brings lots of updates and a few changes. By now you may have met
our new Restaurant and Bar manager, Sophia Ancona. She joins us from Sycuan
Casino where she managed multiple restaurants, bars and service areas. You may
have also noticed other new additions to our staff: new severs, bussers, and pool
attendants added on weekends. We’re working to bring food and drink service to the
pool. Please let me know how it is going.
Clubhouse improvements are continuing. Pedro and his team have been hard at work
painting the hallways, the Lipton Cup Room, and Board Room. If you haven’t been in
the hallway yet, please take a look at our new magnetic bulletin boards. Courtney has
been busy updating all of the member announcements. There’s a new Guest Book for
reciprocal members on a stand by the front desk for our visitors from other clubs. A
reminder that all reciprocal visitors to the Club must sign in and will be asked to
show their current membership card before being accommodated. In addition, the
north side wind breaks have been removed now that warmer weather is
here. We’re getting bids on roll-down windbreaks (like those on the
west side) that we can deploy any time we need them. Our pool and
spa heaters have also been replaced. Thank you for your patience as
we attend to these repairs.
Finally, we’re following the California Department of Public Health
Covid Updates as well as Cal/OSHA. The latest guidance recommends
vaccinations for everyone that has been previously approved for the
vaccine, masks to be worn by anyone who hasn’t been vaccinated,
and no masks required in most outdoor and indoor settings. Our
recommendation is to allow our members to make individual
choices on masks. Pease feel free to wear a mask in our
Clubhouse anytime.
Let's get summer rolling!

CCYC’S Dockwalker Training Program

D
ockwalking is a fantastic way to interact with boaters to help keep California’s
marinas, waterways, and ocean clean and healthy. Anybody who loves the water
is welcome to join this program and help us to promote clean and safe boating
practices. Marina/Yacht operators believe that education is critical to successfully
operating a clean boating facility and minimizing water quality impacts. Becoming a
Dockwalker, or having staff personnel or yacht club members trained as Dockwalkers,
will provide CCYC with the educational materials and tools to work with our tenants and
visitors as partners in the clean marina/yacht club and clean water effort. This program
provides marinas with points toward the Clean Marina designation. Participation in the
Dockwalker Program counts towards the nomination of the Club of the Year under the
community service category. Safety organizations, such as the US Coast Guard Auxiliary
and US Power Squadrons, also benefit from the program.

For the US Coast Guard Auxiliary, The Dockwalker program is consistent with the Coast
Guard marine environmental pollution message and fulfills our commitment to carry
out the mandate of the Commandant of the Coast Guard. The Dockwalker program
complements the USCGAUX Vessel Examination program, supports Public Affairs/
Public Education events, and counts towards the annual Marine Safety service
requirement for the TRIDENT program. Hours of Dockwalking may count towards
earning the AUX Recreational Boating Safety Insignia. For US Power Squadrons, the
Dockwalker program is consistent with the US Power Squadrons mission of Making the
Water a Better Place. The program is endorsed by USPS National, CA USPS. Becoming a
Dockwalker will provide CCYC with educational resources for our safety
classes, vessel examinations, boat shows and other public events and
presentations. This program will support our current efforts, enhance
and broaden our boating safety mission, and will provide USPS with
additional tools to protect our waterways.

Finally, working as a Power Squadron member for the Dockwalker
program counts as effort toward a Merit Mark. If you are a boater, this
is your program because you want to protect the waterways and share
your knowledge with your peers. Many Dockwalkers are boaters
themselves, thus the program boasts that it exerts a bit of “Pier
Pressure.”

Happy and Safe Boating!

THE NAVIGATOR 9

T
he 2021 Sailing Season is well underway, with races every week. We had a great
Sail Fleet meeting in June with Bill Barsz reviewing the history of Sir Thomas
Lipton (of Lipton Tea fame) and how he came to America and supported San
Diego Yacht Club. The sailors also discussed the sailing rules for “When Boats Meet:
What to do when you are over the Start Line early; when boats meet a concrete piling or
mark; and when boats meet each other."
The Lager Beer Can Series is underway! Current leaders are:

Class 1: Thunderstreak, Brad Stump; Class 2: Reydiance, Kai Erdmann; Class 3: Cay Bueno,
Mike Durgin; and Class 4: Piste Off, Bill Bowlby.

The Spring Classic Series sailed on the weekends and has completed three races. The
leaders are: Class 1: Carole’s Fandango, RG; Class 2: Too Much, Robert Bragaglia; Class 3:
Cay Bueno, Mike Durgin, and Class 4: St. Lulu, Nanci &Randy Copley. The last of these four
Spring races is scheduled for Sunday, July 11.

Race Committee: The Sail Fleet honored Race Committee Chairman, Darrell McNurlan,
at the Fleet meeting On June 4. The Race Committee is critical to the success of any racing
program, and we are in search of volunteers who would like to learn more about
managing races. What we need are a few volunteers to ride along with Darrell as he starts
each of the races and records their finishes. The job is easy and can be a lot of fun. It is
also a way to give back to the Club that provides us so many fun activities and services.

Beer Cans: The Stout Series of eight Beer Can races starts on July 7 and
continues every Wednesday at 6:00 pm. We will continue the Lager Beer
Cans on Wednesdays in June, with the June Classic race set for Sunday
June 13. In addition, we will have our annual Summer Solstice race on
Saturday, June 19, racing all the way to the mouth of San Diego Bay.

Sail Meeting: Out next Sail Fleet meeting will be on Friday, July 2, at 6:00,
with guest speaker Eric Kroesche relating his experiences as Sail
Captain and Commodore.
     Happy Sailing,

 Hello Mates!
 J
une’s fishing tournament, hosted by Southwest Yacht Club for all yacht clubs in
the Bay, enjoyed huge participation. According to their stats, 40 boats and about
100 people gave their luck a try. Although we didn’t win any prizes, Harold
Greenberg, his friends and his Captain, Tony, remain the best fishing team at
CCYC! They were able to boat several halibut, nearly every variety of bass, and who
knows what else. Net result, let’s all do it all again some time!

And now the details of our next exciting event (drum roll please….)

5:45 PM: Check in to receive your Event Wristbands and colored Pairing Tickets.
After check in, enjoy your first glass of wine up top, paired with appetizers and a bit of mingling.
✴ When you hear the ship’s bell ring, proceed to the gate that matches the color on your FIRST
ticket. We expect groups of about 18 people at each dock. Present your ticket at the gate so
your Host Chef may serve you your first Plate and wine Pairing.
✴ After 20 minutes, the ship’s bell will sound again. At that time, bid a gracious farewell to your
first Host Chef and move on to the dock that matches the color on your next ticket.
✴ Repeat for each ticket color for a total of 4 Host Chef Stations at different docks. (You have
now had 5 glasses of wine)!
✴ When the ship’s bell sounds for the last time, proceed (carefully) back to the CCYC patio to
present your last ticket for the final Plate and Pairing, something sweet coupled with a
     saucy dessert wine.
Tidbits:
✴ Your colored tickets will be stapled together in a specific order. Each colored ticket
corresponds to a matching color posted on a gate in the CCYC Marina.
✴ All wines will be new selections, not currently available on the Burgee Bar Wine List. If you
enjoyed a particular wine, feel free to buy an additional glass or bottle from the Bar.
✴ Non-alcoholic beverages of soda and water will be available at each Host Chef Station for
     those not drinking wine.
✴ We will do our best to accommodate dietary restrictions if possible. Please inform the office
staff of any such limitations when you register.
✴ Our Host Chefs are very excited to prepare their favorite special dishes for all of us to enjoy.

                        Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage
In August 1914, polar explorer Ernest Shackleton boarded
the Endurance and set sail for Antarctica, where he planned to cross the
last uncharted continent on foot. In January 1915, after battling its way
through a thousand miles of pack ice and only a day's sail short of its
destination, the Endurance became locked in an island of ice. Thus began
the legendary ordeal of Shackleton and his crew of twenty-seven men.
When their ship was finally crushed between two ice floes, they
attempted a near-impossible journey over 850 miles of the South
Atlantic's heaviest seas to the closest outpost of civilization.

                            Into the deep- Robert Ballard

Best known for finding the doomed ship Titanic, celebrated adventurer
Robert Ballard has a lifetime of stories about exploring the ocean depths.
Now he gets personal, telling the stories behind his most exciting
discoveries―including how a top-secret naval mission provided the
opportunity for his Titanic discovery―and opens up about his private
tragedies. He frankly recounts the struggles he has worked through, rising
to prominence as a scientist whose celebrity drew academic scorn. And he
reveals the triumph and agony in the years after his Titanic find: While
media around the world clamored for interviews, he grappled with the
death of his 20-year-old son and the collapse of his marriage amid
academic and military career demands. Finally, he addresses his late-in-
life discovery of his own dyslexia, which he now sees as a gift that has
          shaped his life and accomplishments.

Boat Appetit With Floating Chef Carole Jensen

4th of July Patriotic Mug Cake and Red, White and Blue Bark

This year I celebrate my 10th year as a US citizen! When I first moved from Toronto to the United
States, I was often asked what the difference was between being a Canadian and an American.
Although I will always wear my Canadian heritage with pride, over the years I have become fiercely
 proud of my American citizenship.

I actually moved to the United States on Canada Day (July 1st) and a few days later celebrated my first
4th of July at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. Home will always be Toronto, but my heart is here, with our
children and wonderful friends. Over the years, I have realized that, although my roots keep me
grounded, I am a California girl through and through. Even though the ‘lens’ through which I see and
experience the United States is slightly different, I feel every ounce of pride to be an American citizen
and love to celebrate this gift!

No celebration is complete, of course, without food! For this month’s Navigator, I invited Deborah and
Brian Goelz’s son Gregory aboard (who by the way won the ‘Crab Cakes on our boat prize’ from

CCYC members Nellie and Dwight Ritter, to help me bake. To celebrate Independence Day, it's all
about the red, white and blue. Check out this quick, easy, playfully patriotic Mug Cake to top off your
festivities. The simplicity and colorful sprinkles make this the perfect recipe for cooking with kids and
grandkids. It's sure to be a crowd pleaser!

Here’s to the United States of America, to never forgetting, to standing up for what we believe in, and
to not ever taking our independence for granted!
