8 THE NAVIGATOR CCYC’S Dockwalker Training Program D ockwalking is a fantastic way to interact with boaters to help keep California’s marinas, waterways, and ocean clean and healthy. Anybody who loves the water is welcome to join this program and help us to promote clean and safe boating practices. Marina/Yacht operators believe that education is critical to successfully operating a clean boating facility and minimizing water quality impacts. Becoming a Dockwalker, or having staff personnel or yacht club members trained as Dockwalkers, will provide CCYC with the educational materials and tools to work with our tenants and visitors as partners in the clean marina/yacht club and clean water effort. This program provides marinas with points toward the Clean Marina designation. Participation in the Dockwalker Program counts towards the nomination of the Club of the Year under the community service category. Safety organizations, such as the US Coast Guard Auxiliary and US Power Squadrons, also benefit from the program. For the US Coast Guard Auxiliary, The Dockwalker program is consistent with the Coast Guard marine environmental pollution message and fulfills our commitment to carry out the mandate of the Commandant of the Coast Guard. The Dockwalker program complements the USCGAUX Vessel Examination program, supports Public Affairs/ Public Education events, and counts towards the annual Marine Safety service requirement for the TRIDENT program. Hours of Dockwalking may count towards earning the AUX Recreational Boating Safety Insignia. For US Power Squadrons, the Dockwalker program is consistent with the US Power Squadrons mission of Making the Water a Better Place. The program is endorsed by USPS National, CA USPS. Becoming a Dockwalker will provide CCYC with educational resources for our safety classes, vessel examinations, boat shows and other public events and presentations. This program will support our current efforts, enhance and broaden our boating safety mission, and will provide USPS with additional tools to protect our waterways. Finally, working as a Power Squadron member for the Dockwalker program counts as effort toward a Merit Mark. If you are a boater, this is your program because you want to protect the waterways and share your knowledge with your peers. Many Dockwalkers are boaters themselves, thus the program boasts that it exerts a bit of “Pier Pressure.” Happy and Safe Boating! Port Captain Van Peterson
THE NAVIGATOR 9 T he 2021 Sailing Season is well underway, with races every week. We had a great Sail Fleet meeting in June with Bill Barsz reviewing the history of Sir Thomas Lipton (of Lipton Tea fame) and how he came to America and supported San Diego Yacht Club. The sailors also discussed the sailing rules for “When Boats Meet: What to do when you are over the Start Line early; when boats meet a concrete piling or mark; and when boats meet each other." The Lager Beer Can Series is underway! Current leaders are: Class 1: Thunderstreak, Brad Stump; Class 2: Reydiance, Kai Erdmann; Class 3: Cay Bueno, Mike Durgin; and Class 4: Piste Off, Bill Bowlby. The Spring Classic Series sailed on the weekends and has completed three races. The leaders are: Class 1: Carole’s Fandango, RG; Class 2: Too Much, Robert Bragaglia; Class 3: Cay Bueno, Mike Durgin, and Class 4: St. Lulu, Nanci &Randy Copley. The last of these four Spring races is scheduled for Sunday, July 11. Race Committee: The Sail Fleet honored Race Committee Chairman, Darrell McNurlan, at the Fleet meeting On June 4. The Race Committee is critical to the success of any racing program, and we are in search of volunteers who would like to learn more about managing races. What we need are a few volunteers to ride along with Darrell as he starts each of the races and records their finishes. The job is easy and can be a lot of fun. It is also a way to give back to the Club that provides us so many fun activities and services. Beer Cans: The Stout Series of eight Beer Can races starts on July 7 and continues every Wednesday at 6:00 pm. We will continue the Lager Beer Cans on Wednesdays in June, with the June Classic race set for Sunday June 13. In addition, we will have our annual Summer Solstice race on Saturday, June 19, racing all the way to the mouth of San Diego Bay. Sail Meeting: Out next Sail Fleet meeting will be on Friday, July 2, at 6:00, with guest speaker Eric Kroesche relating his experiences as Sail Captain and Commodore. Happy Sailing, RG Sail Fleet Captain Sail Captain RG Head

THE NAVIGATOR 17 Ahoy Bookworms! Join us every 3rd Sunday at 12pm for our discussions on our nautical book. Starting in July, we will be meeting in-person at the Club-AND-on ZOOM! JULY SELECTION Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage In August 1914, polar explorer Ernest Shackleton boarded the Endurance and set sail for Antarctica, where he planned to cross the last uncharted continent on foot. In January 1915, after battling its way through a thousand miles of pack ice and only a day's sail short of its destination, the Endurance became locked in an island of ice. Thus began the legendary ordeal of Shackleton and his crew of twenty-seven men. When their ship was finally crushed between two ice floes, they attempted a near-impossible journey over 850 miles of the South Atlantic's heaviest seas to the closest outpost of civilization. August SELECTION Into the deep- Robert Ballard Best known for finding the doomed ship Titanic, celebrated adventurer Robert Ballard has a lifetime of stories about exploring the ocean depths. Now he gets personal, telling the stories behind his most exciting discoveries―including how a top-secret naval mission provided the opportunity for his Titanic discovery―and opens up about his private tragedies. He frankly recounts the struggles he has worked through, rising to prominence as a scientist whose celebrity drew academic scorn. And he reveals the triumph and agony in the years after his Titanic find: While media around the world clamored for interviews, he grappled with the death of his 20-year-old son and the collapse of his marriage amid academic and military career demands. Finally, he addresses his late-in- life discovery of his own dyslexia, which he now sees as a gift that has shaped his life and accomplishments. 18 THE NAVIGATOR Boat Appetit With Floating Chef Carole Jensen 4th of July Patriotic Mug Cake and Red, White and Blue Bark This year I celebrate my 10th year as a US citizen! When I first moved from Toronto to the United States, I was often asked what the difference was between being a Canadian and an American. Although I will always wear my Canadian heritage with pride, over the years I have become fiercely proud of my American citizenship. I actually moved to the United States on Canada Day (July 1st) and a few days later celebrated my first 4th of July at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. Home will always be Toronto, but my heart is here, with our children and wonderful friends. Over the years, I have realized that, although my roots keep me grounded, I am a California girl through and through. Even though the ‘lens’ through which I see and experience the United States is slightly different, I feel every ounce of pride to be an American citizen and love to celebrate this gift! No celebration is complete, of course, without food! For this month’s Navigator, I invited Deborah and Brian Goelz’s son Gregory aboard (who by the way won the ‘Crab Cakes on our boat prize’ from Type to enter text guessing the names of all the dogs correctly from a previous Navigator) along with his pal ,Gus, son of CCYC members Nellie and Dwight Ritter, to help me bake. To celebrate Independence Day, it's all about the red, white and blue. Check out this quick, easy, playfully patriotic Mug Cake to top off your festivities. The simplicity and colorful sprinkles make this the perfect recipe for cooking with kids and grandkids. It's sure to be a crowd pleaser! Here’s to the United States of America, to never forgetting, to standing up for what we believe in, and to not ever taking our independence for granted! Happy Independence Day America!
