PRESIDENT’S ADDRESS Hello all hockey players, coaches, parents and fans. I truly cannot believe how fast this year has gone by and know how much this hockey community aspires to be one of the most sought after elite organizations. The tremendous amount of pre planning and planning throughout the season sometimes seems like it’s never ending but a thought out plan is usually a successful plan. On behalf of the Maple Leaf Athletic I wish to thank so many people that continue to give up their donated time to help make this club better every day. My executive board members I’m truly blessed to be able to work with such incredible creative minds to make my Experience as being the president that much more enjoyable. I’m very proud of the year our organization had this past season. Lots of new and different approaches to the start of the 2019 -2020 season. This was the first year the Midget AAA program did not have a team as the new changes to the program took affect and MLAC sat out the first year, as we will be rotating amongst the 4 City clubs. The 2020 -2021 season we will have our Midget AAA back going again. The exciting news as well our club will be taking on the Pee Wee AA teams and will make our organization that much stronger. This organization continues to focus on development for our athletes and we feel we accomplished this in many ways. Power Edge Pro / Competitive Thread / Donna Stuart / our Spin sessions at the club house. We have already put into place a summer program to continue developing our players to be faster, stronger & better for the upcoming season which is not that far away. The incredible focus on giving back to the community continues to be top of mind every season and this past season our organization stepped up in many ways. From the Pink Cancer Awareness games to getting our players involved with either feeding the homeless or delivery presents for the Santa’s Anonymous made me very proud as a parent of the organization and as the President. The amount of work dedicated to putting these events together is no easy task. Our Social director Michelle Courville did an exceptional job this year, our club is lucky to have such an incredible caring volunteer. The ladies Auxiliary continue to support our young athletes from injured players and feeding each of the players on bus trips with a lunch. Deja and the ladies Auxiliary do so much for the club I cannot thank them enough for all that they continue to do behind the scenes. The banquet and the year book is a true example of our strong leadership from the president of the LAX, Deja Wachowicz / WAY TO GO DEJA and thank you. Our general manager Tyler Richards did an incredible job this season. He’s very passionate and usually has a good one liner and a story to tell. This being his first season as the clubs general manager he was very committed to ensure he was in the rinks helping support our Coaching staff and ensuring our development program was running smooth. I have been truly blessed to have great people supporting me as the president of the club. The entire board members have supported me throughout my 3 years and I thank you for that. My first Vice Stew Baxter has been an incredible supporter and has done a tremendous job. Liz Huston is and has been the “GLUE” for this organization as the Registrar and working with all the team’s managers to ensure they are set for the season. Thank you Liz for everything that you do for this organization and keeping the executive members on point. I wanted to thank all of our sponsors for supporting our teams, without you we would not be able to do the over and above development opportunities we incorporate every season. In closing I have so many people I wish to thank before I sign off as your MLAC president as my 3 years has come very fast and I know the club will be in good hands. I will move into the past President position and will fulfill my duties and support the club as much as I can. I wish all the Graduating players that are moving on a huge thank you and good luck in all your future endeavors. I truly hope one day we cross paths and maybe be a future coach with our organization. Have an incredible summer break and I’m looking forward to next season and to step back and watch this organization prosper and grow as the Elite organization it already is. Thank you all for the incredible memories I will cherish forever. To my family I cannot say thank you enough for all the support and help over the last 3 years. Yours Truly Neil Brown President
MLAC VICE PRESIDENT The 2019/20 season has come and gone. To me this was a very exciting season for the club. It was a rebuilding year for us and in my opinion we came though it with flying colors. All of our teams improved considerably from last season and a lot of that comes from the program that Tyler Richards had put in place and the coaching staff we hired this year. Having almost all practices at Russ Barns and Spin before or after practice reduced the amount of travel for parents. Competitive Thread and Power Edge pro seemed to help our players develop all throughout the season. I am a little biased when it comes to this team, the Midget AA, as my son Zach played there. I can’t say enough about the team. They were exciting to watch all season finishing first in their division with a 23-6-3 record. This was the best record for one of our club teams in a long time. This club has started to be noticed more and more as well thanks to all the social media this season. Brooke Sampert did a fantastic job for us this year and I would like to thank her for that. I also would like to thank Traxx Coachlines for everything they did for us this year. They sponsored one of our Bantam AA teams, provided a bus free of charge when we did 50/50 at Oiler games and gave us great service once again for this past season. Thank you Lonie Bartel and Traxx. Every season has its ups and downs, but there were definitely more ups this year for sure. I am very excited for the 2020/21 season as we will be adding two peewee AA teams to the club and we get back the Midget AAA team as part of the 4 club 3 team rotation. With the hard work the 4 clubs did this past season on new boundaries, this will also help benefit the club giving us a few new areas and some new faces to the club. In closing, I want to say that I am very proud of this club and the people that work so hard to run it, from the Executives, Alumni members, the Ladies Auxiliary and the parents that put many hours of volunteering in. Thanks and enjoy a well-deserved summer break. VP Stew Baxter Stew Baxter VP MLAC MLAC HOCKEY DIRECTOR Hello Everyone It has been another great year for the Maple Leaf Athletic Club. I would like to thank all the Players and parents for their hard work and efforts throughout the season. Without you and your commitment to this sport, there would be no Maple Leaf Athletic Club. The Players played with a dedication and passion that was noticeable to not only myself, but many members throughout the leagues that we participate in. I believe these a reflection of the Coaches and there tireless efforts. I want to personally thank all the people behind the scenes that have help to develop and move the club in the right direction. I wish everyone a great summer and look forward to seeing many of you next year, and to the graduating players the best of luck in your hockey careers, and whatever the future holds for you. Yours in Hockey Tyler Richards

MIDGET MAJOR AA-BEVERLY OPTIMISTS Kyle Lambourne-Head Coach, Kal Eschuk-Assistant coach, Adam Hall-Assistant Coach, Ashley Ostapowich-Trainer, Karen Evasiuk- Manager, Nestor Soroby-Director This year has been one for the memory books. A group of guys that from day 1 have stepped up and played for one another, supported one another, and won for one another. Coming from behind for a dramatic 3 on 3 overtime win in Prince Albert for the Tournament Championship, to the 2nd place finish in Maple Ridge, and the pursuit of finishing first in the division and beyond, these are memories that will last for a lifetime. From new comers like Alexis Alexander, Kyle Bartel, and Max McKee, to some of the more seasoned MLAC veterans like Zach Renner-Baxter, Jackson Field, and Dominic Houle, this team has made everyone proud, from the coaches, to the parents, right down to the players themselves. To the graduating 2002 Players: #5 Dominic Houle, #7 Zach Vandekerckhove, #8 Jesse Courville-Lynch, #9 Jackson Field, #12 Brayden Ramos, #16 Joshua Bentley, #19 Henry Lenarduzzi, #21 Zachary Renner-Baxter, and goalies #1 Max McKee and #31 Alexis Alexander, it has been a privilege getting to experience your last . year of minor hockey with each and every one of you. Sincerely, Kyle Lambourne Head Coach MLAC Beverly Optimists 2019-2020
To our graduating players, we wish you all the best in the future!
This year being team mom has been an honor sharing the title with Terry. Being team mom for the MLAC Midget AA Beverly Optimist for the second year has been awesome. With 8 returning boys from last year, this year has been a memorable one. Having 10 graduating boys with us this year had been a treat watching all these boys grow into young men and I wish all of them the best of luck in whatever next year brings whether it be going College or University or carrying on with your hockey career, I wish you all the best of luck. Our team and families went to Prince Albert in November to the Kelly Dmyterko Tournament and went 5-0 and won Gold, then at the end of January we went to Maple Ridge, BC to defend our title from last year and our boys fought a great fight and won Silver, and I didn't need a helmet to fend off any pucks flying at me... Way to go boys! ❤ MLAC Midget AA Beverly Optimist finished 1st in their division this year and broke a lot of records A few boys broke some records for MLAC and a few boys hit Milestones with MLAC ❤ Way to fight hard boys!❤ So now it's time to realize that my son is finished with Edmonton Minor Hockey and I want to thank MLAC for making these last 2 years very memorable for me and my family Thank you to Coach Kyle, Adam and Kal for being our coaches this year and fighting hard and Coach Kyle for keeping us informed with all his stats. Thanks Ashley for making sure our boys were healthy and strong enough to play and Nestor for being our Director and keeping us all inline. What an AWESOME year, THANKS for the memories, I WOULDN'T CHANGE A THING Michelle Courville Team Mom Midget AA Beverly Optimist 2019-2020

PLAYER OF THE MONTH OCTOBER TO FEBRUARY SEASON 2019-2020 CONGRATULATIONS BOYS! This was a special year for our team – lots of wins, points, records… and while it’s nice to win, for me it remains about the boys. ALL 19 of them. I am so grateful to have spent this year in the company of these amazing young men. It was my joy to watch the quiet leadership of Dom and Josh (who I’ve seen grow since they were itty bitty), the unparalleled grit of Ramos and Cosco, the amazing spirit of Bartle and Max (who after winning a grueling game in a shoot-out after 9 shooters went to console the losing goalie before celebrating with his team – SUCH a class act), Alexis’s determination and the easy-going nature of Vandy. I got to meet a few who were new to me – Jackson, Henry, Zach, Riley & Jesse and to be team mom again to some of my long-standing faves – Enrique, Brownie, Cramer, Toff, and T. And not to be forgotten, my Mak. Truly my honor to watch them all (and maybe chirp a few) and I wish them all the best in wherever their journey takes them. Thanks to the amazing hockey moms on this team who ‘mom-ed’ my son when I couldn’t. I was happy to return the favor when I could. Wouldn’t trade this crazy hockey life for the world. ❤Team Mom Terry
MIDGET MINOR AAA GO LOGOWEAR This year is my son’s 1st year with MLAC and I am fortunate to be the Team Mom of the MAA Go Logowear team. As team mom I have met 18 wonderful and supportive families. This year got off to a rocky start. The boys went to Olds for a tournament and they came 6th place out of 10 teams. Then we went to a tournament in Maple Ridge, BC with a mix of family & friends. Our weekend didn’t disappoint as our boys brought Terence Scott-Head Coach, Steffon Nelson-Assistant Coach, home the gold medal beating out the first place host team!Justin Funny Canning-Assistant Coach, Cameron Irish-Assistant Coach, enough as team Michelle Keough -Trainer, Doug Ungstad-Manager,John Yaremkowych -Director mom, I didn’t realize my commitments included taking a puck to the head! Let itGo Logo Minor Midget AAA 2019/2020 Season Year Reflection be known that I took one for the“Nothing in Life that's Worth Anything is Easy “– Barack Obama team. The start to the Go Logo Minor Midget AAA season wasn’t how a team would ideally like to get going. It was nothing short of a Our boys ended up third going struggle and a battle every night to compete with the teams in the league. No game early in the year stung more than a game into round robin play for playoffs tying goal by the CRAA Gold team with 11 seconds left to play, which made for a long trip home with coaches and players and ended up in second place. searching for answers. From that point on, the Go Logo team memorable played the game season! again with confidence, showing up to the rink expecting to win and competing with the best teams in the league. The winning and strong play continued for the remainder of the season and set them up for a competitive playoff run. This team was dealt adversity, bad luck, difficulties, and challenges; right from the onset of tryouts; they could have used many excuses and had given up, but they didn’t. They rallied together to overcome the struggles and obstacles set before them and faced adversity head on, instead of running from it. There was no quit in this team, they fought to the bitter end, no matter what the score, game in, game out. Eventually hard work and perseverance paid off and it did on that Sunday afternoon in GP. To be successful, you have to fail a number of times before one will succeed. It’s what you learn from the failed attempts that can be used as fuel to help one become successful. The lessons these young men learned by the failures of our season made them a stronger, more resilient group of individuals that rallied together as a team. Lessons that they can take with them into their future teams and ones that will help them succeed in life. -Terrace Scott

This is my son’s third year with the club and my first as Team Mom. As the years have passed the one thing that never changes in hockey is the friendships PLAYER OF THE MONTH and memories made on every team. Whether it is with FROM OCTOBER TO the parents, the grandparents, Coaches or the players, friendships are formed that will in some cases last a FEBRUARY lifetime. This year was a perfect example of just that. SEASON 2019-2020 We started the year with just over half the team as returning players and the rest from all over the city. It CONGRATULATIONS BOYS! didn’t take long for these young men to become teammates and friends. Sure some of the season was a little rough but they never gave up on each other. Being part of a team doesn’t always mean just showing up for practice and games but spending time together outside of hockey. I hope they look back fondly not just at their time on the ice but of the time spent together volunteering at Father’s House, delivering toys for Santa’s Anonymous, playing shinny with their dads or just laughing at their Christmas party. When these boys came together to either work or play as a group it showed me what being a team is all about. You might not remember every game you played or the scores but my wish for you is that you look back one day and smile at the memories and the friends you made because those are what will last a lifetime. ❤ Team Mom Elsa Ferguson
MIDGET MINOR AA LENBETH WEEPING TILE Brad Bilida-Head Coach, Brett Bilida-Assistant coach, Ryan Picco-Assistant Coach, Andrew Picco-Assistant Coach, Amanda Dubois-Trainer, April MacKinnon- Manager, Clay Kolstad-Director To all the players, parents, and MLAC executive, I would like to thank you all for the great opportunity to coach the minor midget 15AA team for the 2019-2020 season. We had a team of players with many different skill sets and many different hockey histories and to have them develop into, this team was a pleasure to watch. Our season had a slow start, but the players did not give up and the leadership of this team started to surface quickly supporting the coaching staff and all other players, and it was enjoying to watch. Once we started getting some points in the win column, players started to have a taste of success and this feeling was something that this team was able to draw from for the rest of the season. We were able to participate in two tournaments this past season, even though we found the team we competed against were skilled, this team still played and worked through all the challenges that came with that, and at the end of the games, players found enjoyment with spending time together and supported each other through the challenges of the game. As the season progressed through the long drawn out winter months and through the play offs, players had smiles and a willingness to compete and listen. As these players graduate to the next level of hockey and into adulthood, we hope as a staff that they found something from us that they will be able to carry forward and help them. Thank you Brad

THIS WAS MY FIRST YEAR AS A LAX MOM. I REALLY ENJOYED BEING A PART OF THIS GROUP AND WORKING WITH THE OTHER MOM’S. BANTAM AAA SCOTT PUMP Leo Reagan-Head Coach, Donny Ostashek -Assistant Coach Susan Brooke Sampert -Trainer, Edward Henshall-Manager, Bob Krewenchuk-Director Scott Pump 2019-20 Season Recap The season of 2019 -20 did not go quite as planned, the team was plagued with injury and illness through out the season. Only dressing our selected group in league play 4 times managing a record of 1-1-2, starting the season in a team building tournament in Abbottsford , BC; performing great on the West Coast, losing to a Prep team from California in the semi final and coming home with a record of 4-1. This group of athletes grew as a team throughout the year, we faced adversity head on and defeated it time and time again. There were great relationships built, new friendships and new memories that will last forever. We didn’t loose on the scoreboard but more learnt, we found ourselves late in the season and the product on the ice was different than the beginning. We proved to many that we could play with any team in the league. It was an awesome journey with this group of 13-14-year-old athletes, as I coach, I want to thank this team for the season, the new relationships and the lessons myself learned throughout the process. There are bright futures for many from this team , it will be exciting to watch them grow. Coach Leo Reagan

PLAYER OF THE MONTH FROM OCTOBER TO FEBRUARY SEASON 2019-2020 CONGRATULATIONS BOYS! This year I had the incredible honor of being the team mom to Bantam AAA Scott Pump. I say honor because when you are blessed to be around a group such as the team that we had, I felt lucky. This group had so much personality, perseverance, dedication and loyalty no matter what the scoreboard showed. The friendships and comradery that I got to witness on the ice and off was so rewarding and it all began in our first tournament in Abbotsford and hasn’t come to an end. I was the lucky one and look forward to what the future holds for every single one you! “Bond is stronger than blood. The family grows stronger by bond” Team Mom Nicole Malkewich
BANTAM AA – ALUMNI Tyson Munro-Head Coach, Bryce Munro-Assistant Coach, Grant Nicholson-Assistant Coach, Brayden Biccum-Assistant Coach Alyssa Reid–Trainer, Ryan Leskiw-Manager, George Juhasz–Director Coming into my first season with the Maple Leaf Athletic Club, I had no idea what to expect. Coming over from Sherwood Park, where I spent my entire minor hockey and coaching career, I was hesitant about joining a new organization. What a wonderful surprise this season turned out to be. The Maple Leaf Athletic Club has a sense of family and community like nothing I’ve ever been a part of. There’s a sense of pride and history, whether that be in with the executive team, the Alumni members, or the feeling you get when you walk into the clubhouse. It’s a special organization. Being my first time as a Head Coach, and all three of my assistants coaching for the first time, there was a lot of learning for us this season. We came out of the tryout process incredibly optimistic about the team we had selected. We knew on the ice there was talent and hard work, but what we had to discover over the course of the year was the quality of people these athletes were. We were blessed with an amazing set of young men and women who come from great families and are growing into quality people. We made sure that our goal was not just to grow these kids as hockey players, but as people, and I feel we accomplished that goal. October was up and down, it was our time to really get to know our players more. Lots of lessons to be taught: respect for each other and team staff, the importance of being on time, and following team dress code are just a few examples. The month ended with a jaw-dropping weekend: a 9-0 win followed by a 12-1 loss. Crazy! November was the most difficult, but I believe most important, month of the season. We didn’t win a single game. Didn’t gain a single point. But it taught us what it meant to play for each other instead of for ourselves. The individual efforts and tendencies were highlighted. The negative attitudes and poor efforts began to disappear. We needed to hit rock bottom in order to get over the hump and see success. December was our most successful month of season. We began to learn from our past mistakes and the development of our players became evident. It began with a wild 9-8 victory! More lessons came that night, as we thought the game was over when we had a 7-3 lead. Beaumont tied the game at 8-8 before we capitalized on the very next faceoff. Stress! With a pair of ties in the next two games, we would finish on back-to-back wins for an undefeated 3-0-2 month heading into Christmas. December was capped off with the annual EBIT tournament. I believe this was the weekend that turned us from a “team” into a “family”. Two come-from-behind victories and a thrilling 7-6 win over the 1st place CAC Alumni found us in the #1 seed in our division. Unfortunately, our prize was a matchup against the undefeated Lakeland Panthers. Though we lost the game, the night was topped off by goaltender Erika Lind winning one of the annual EBIT scholarships! January kept us on a torrid pace, finishing with a 5-2 record. Four straight victories saw us outscore opponents 25-6. This left us with a combined December/January record of 11-3-2. Capping off the month was the Pink game, seeing us defeat CAC by a score of 4-3. (P.S. Please never let CAC wear red jerseys on Pink night ever again. What a nightmare!) Unfortunately for us, we ran out of gas in February. The month started with 3 games in 3 nights, giving us just 2 of a possible 6 points. Heartbreaking losses to St. Albert and KC saw us drop a few standings positions, and we finished in the 6 th seed. To our demise, all of our scoring touch was used up in January, and we couldn’t buy a goal in the playoffs. A truly tough ending to what we believe was a real successful season. In my final speech to the players, all I could talk about was how proud I was of them. I told them at the beginning of the season that I wanted to develop them both on and off the ice, and I feel the lessons learned have helped them accomplish that. It’s difficult not to be emotional while writing this. Myself and our staff have grown a connection and care with each and every one of these amazing young men and women. I’m so excited to see what the future holds for every single one of them. I can only hope that they look back in 10 years and remember what a wonderful season we had as the 2019-20 Bantam AA Alumni. To all our players…Number 1, I’m proud of all of you for what you accomplished this year. Number 2…that’s a big win boys! Cheers! Coach Tyson

PLAYER OF THE MONTH FROM OCTOBER TO FEBRUARY SEASON 2019-2020 CONGRATULATIONS BOYS! This is my sixth year with the MLAC family but first year as Ladies Auxiliary Team Mom. What an absolute privilege it has been! Not only did I meet a group of incredible, hard- working hockey moms, but I was also able to experience what an LAX Team Mom truly means. All moms want to let their children know they’re a part of a family, to highlight the wonderful achievements of each child, to show their children they love and care about them, and to recognize the importance of not only having men but strong women perspectives in our players’ lives. As Team Mom, it meant welcoming each player with a personalized bag they could use all year, as a symbol that every player belonged on this team; it meant gently reminding the coaches to choose a Player of the Month, who was not selected because they were most talented, but who accomplished their personal best; it meant waking up early (along with Deja our LAX President) to make customized lunches to send them off on their road trip, just like moms do every day for school; and it meant putting on a Ladies Christmas Brunch, showing thanks to the many people that it takes a village to raise a child. But being a Team Mom is even more than that! It is the opportunity to watch a group of talented young men grow into smart, polite, driven and well-behaved young people. Some of the highlights this year: We never lost a game in December. We had three wins, two ties and no losses! Then later that same month in the EBIT tournament, we made it into the Gold Semi-Finals, with Alumni winning all of their round-robin games. We also had fun times on the road where friendships were sown and where experiences were shared. We also had a group of four intelligent and respectful coaches with solid philosophies in place (Thank you Coaches Tyson, Bryce, Grant and Brayden!), a highly proficient and adaptable trainer (Thank you Alyssa!), a sociable, knowledgeable and humorous Director (Thank you George!), an organized awesome Team Manager (Thank you Ryan!), and lastly an amazing, entertaining, and positive group of parents who made hanging out before games more fun than it should be! A Team Mom then is all those things a mother is: the person who gives invisible hugs, warm fuzzies and who lets their children and their team know someone cares. Thank you for a great year! It has been an honour to your LAX Mom. Eva Poon
BANTAM AA TRAXX COACHLINES Chris St. Jacques-Head Coach, Mike Yaremkowych-Assistant Coach, Matt Hage-Assistant Coach, Tyler Huston-Assistant Coach Teegan McMullin-Trainer, Lisa Tellefson-Manager, Merv Luczak-Director The MLAC Traxx Bantam AA Hockey Club coaching staff would like to thank the players, parents, families, the organization, and all of our sponsors and supporters for a memorable first season as a coaching staff. Without the support and belief in our approach to the game and our players, this season would not have been as successful as it has been so far. As a staff, we were aware of the struggles that teams had in past years, and it was our goal to help change the perception of MLAC hockey to opposing teams. All 4 of the coaches on this team grew up playing for MLAC and it was our desire to give back to the club that gave us opportunities as young players. We didn’t want to be seen as a team that was “an easy 2 points” and we took steps to avoid that from happening. By utilizing systems that are more popular in European hockey, our goal was to bring a style of hockey that many opposing coaches hadn’t seen. We knew that there would be challenges with this as well, because players hadn’t learned it in the past, a challenge that we were willing to deal with. Very early on, we told our players to “not be afraid to make mistakes, and that if you are going to make a mistake, make it a big one.” We would rather see the players fail in an attempt than not take a chance at all. Like every team, there were some ups and downs, some big wins, some tough losses. The one thing about this group that we are impressed by, is how they came together as a team and became more of a family down the final stretch of the season. There was a shift in team dynamic, and the boys realized that in order to succeed together, you have to play together. This shift happened on December 20 at our pink game, a game that we came in to at 5 games below .500 (6-11-2). Our boys went out and played a great game for a worthy cause, one especially significant this season. Our boys ended up tying that game 2-2 against a team that would eventually finish first in our division. Our last 13 games we went 5-5-3, scoring 40 goals and only allowing 37, finishing our season at 11-16-5, in 5th spot in our division. It was our pleasure to have the opportunity to help coach and develop these young men into better players, and hopefully give them skills that transition into success in their lives outside of hockey. As a staff, we would like to leave the boys with a quote to consider: “The biggest risk is not taking any risk... In a world that’s changing really quickly, the only strategy that is guaranteed to fail is not taking risks.” Thank you again, MLAC Traxx Bantam AA Hockey Club Coaching Staff
