The fact that the course is mainly assessed by doing coursework also relieved some of the pressure, although some of the course is also assessed by doing exams. The flexibility in lesson times meant I could balance my work and my college life. I found the teachers very friendly and they went the extra mile when I needed help. Having finished the course, I am now looking forward to going to Coventry University this September to study Biomedical sciences.

WWW.FARN-CT.AC.UK | 01252 405555 27 SOPHIA I STUDIED: BSC HONS COMPUTING I’M NOW: A SOFTWARE ENGINEER I was in the Army and got medically discharged. When I left, I went back to college for a year and during that time I decided what I wanted to do. The course was very insightful. I was a late starter and didn’t have much experience. I was a bit scared not knowing anything but I got a lot of support and help which I’m really grateful for. “ Being in a small group and having the communication and relationship with the lecturers ” is great. You can ask them any question and they will point you in the right direction. I really enjoyed the networking module as it was hands-on. I also liked web development – you see a lot of websites and wonder how they’re made. When you can actually do it yourself it’s fun and not as hard as you might think. I’m happy I chose to study here, as I feel if I went to a bigger university I might’ve got lost in the crowd and not received as much support as I did here. I’m now a Graduate Software Engineer at Viasat UK. Most of the information covered in the degree I am using now. I was exposed to so many different components as part of the course and in my role I find that everything applies.

It was important for me to be of service to others. Farnborough College is the nearest to where I live. Fortunately the course is part time, which allows me to carry on working and support my family financially, and devote quality time to my children who are in Junior School whilst studying. “ I love that I’m amongst like- minded people, mature learners finding a new purpose and following their passion to hopefully make a difference in other people’s lives. ” A lot of the course content is fascinating. Being curious about self-awareness is something I was involved in through personal development and interest. I’d already been on the journey of wishing to understand myself more and this is one of the core elements of the course. WWW.FARN-CT.AC.UK | 01252 405555 39 LEILA I STUDIED: BA HONS EDUCATION (LEARNING SUPPORT) I’M NOW: TRAINING AS A PRIMARY SCHOOL TEACHER I began my journey while working in a primary school as a teaching assistant. I realised I really wanted to become a primary school teacher and enrolled on a foundation degree, which is designed with the teaching assistant’s professional role in mind. I liked the idea of having smaller class sizes, which also meant the lecturers were able to offer more personalised support to match my learning needs and requirements. “ I did not feel as though I was just another student, I felt valued and included whenever ” I was in a lecture. I also felt that the lecturers wanted to help beyond lesson times and were so willing to go the extra mile for the students who needed that extra bit of support. This has helped me to achieve my dream of completing a degree, something I did not think was achievable for me.
