BEST VALUE Vin de France Selection 2014 87 recommendations for the international retail market For the fifth year in a row ANIVIN DE FRANCE held a blind tasting in Paris in February. The aim of the event was to select wines in the ANIVIN DE FRANCE category worthy of particular recommendation to the international retail market. The French Union of Oenologists (Union des Oenologues de France, UOEF), which has extensive experience in staging and hosting international wine competitions such as Vinalies Internationales, was entrusted with organizing the wine selection. This cooperation with such a renowned partner ensured a uniform procedure and ideal tasting conditions. Our jury of international experts tasted 290 wines this year and selected 87 for recommendation. Visit www.vindefrance-cepages.org/en/best-value-vin-de-france for a complete list of the selected wines. Jury This year’s expert jury included buyers from the international retail market. Thanks to their perfect knowledge of the wine market, it was possible to select cuvées with the flavor profile to match the expectations of a great number of consumers. PANEL QUOTES Simon Gaudreault, wine expert SAQ, Canada “It’s a good thing that France is embracing a more commercial attitude and a more New World-style mentality without losing the fact that it makes some of the best wines in the world.” Grace Cai Yingji, buyer Aussino, China “Vin de France wines have many competitive advantages – price, attractive packaging, the flexibility to select grapes from across France – [all of which] make them a creative and interesting [category].” Christian Mewes, buyer EDEKA Struve, Germany “Vin de France has the potential to be a playground for new wine styles. Over the last few years I think the quality of Vin de France wines has increased very quickly.” Jacqueline Snoeker, buyer Ahold, Netherlands “Vin de France wines are very relevant on our market – there is great commercial potential.” more PANEL QUOTES next page 7
PANEL QUOTES Benjamin Cahill, buyer The Co-operative, United Kingdom “You can make a wine with character, one which is definitely French, but with a New World twist so it is approachable. I think producers should have the confidence to experiment and remember what they are good at.” Ana Sapungiu, buyer Oddbins, United Kingdom “Vin de France is an opportunity for people doing the right things to build a brand and be successful. And what I like about it is that it is trying to make wine for the end consumer, not terroir driven, but grape and style driven.” “Vin de France wines offer great potential in terms of innovation with different grape varieties and brands.” Beth Willard, buyer Direct Wines, United Kingdom “For us what’s important is finding a style that matches consumer demand rather than specific appellations. This category fits perfectly with our overall philosophy.” William Schallert, buyer Young’s Market Co., USA “Vin de France wines’ competitive advantages are quality combined with value. Vin de France is a necessary step in the growth and development of wines from France – it will help take away some of the mystery surrounding French wines for new wine consumers.” 8

It represents all that is good about the land with the most illustrious tradition of fine winemaking. What has made La Châsse a firm favorite with wine drinkers around the world is its consistently delicious, fruity and elegant style – a modern wine with classic values. The name, La Châsse, refers to the ornate chests used to store the treasures of the Pontiffs who lived in Avignon, on the banks of the River Rhône, during the 14th Century.
