www.whkp.com WHKP’s 2020 Apple Harvest Magazine • 3 WHKP Welcomes You To Apple Harvest Season What a strange year! Corona has taken the Apple Festival from us. There will be no King Apple Parade, no vendors up and down Main Street, and no entertainment. But make no mistake… there will be apples!!! Henderson County has a bumper crop of apples this year. All varieties appear to be healthy and ready for the taking. Richard Rhodes WHKP’s Apple Harvest Magazine will highlight many of our local apple growers – all of them have point of purchase stands. Many of our growers have full bakeries now, in addition to their apples. If you haven’t had a Henderson County “apple cider” donut – you have missed out. WHKP salutes our growers during this trying time and we encourage you to use this booklet to see our growers and local merchants who support them. WHKP fm & am continue to lead all of Henderson County in radio listeners. We thank you for allowing us to be the apple of your ear… for 74 years now. Be sure and see pages 18-19, highlighting this year’s featured apple grower! 5-STAR

12 • WHKP’s 2020 Apple Harvest Magazine www.whkp.com Johnny Appleseed Actually, his name was John Chapman and he was born in 1774. As far as his legend goes, he travelled the country on foot introducing folks to apple trees. Known for being barefooted most of the time, he planted trees and entire nurseries in many states over his 71 year life span. He wasn’t just an apple nursery planter – he used the apple to spread the good news of the gospel, especially to children. During his time, he was known as much as a preacher of the gospel as he was a planter of apple trees. © Wikipedia John Chapman never married, and died a lifelong vegetarian March 18, 1845. There is a Johnny Appleseed Museum in Urbana, OH and in Fort Wayne, IN, where he spent his final years, a minor league baseball team is named in his honor, the Fort Wayne Tin Caps. 14 • WHKP’s 2020 Apple Harvest Magazine www.whkp.com The Honeycrisp: Star of the Show Honeycrisp has been a runaway success in the country, and here in Henderson County. Developed in the 1960s by the University of Minnesota, it was not introduced into the market until the 1990s. The honeycrisp is a mix between the Golden Delicious and the Macoun apple and is praised for its “touch of pear flavor.” The ever-popular honeycrisp apple has rapidly become the most sought after apple in Henderson County. While many local Henderson County growers grow honeycrisp, they indicate it is a very hard to grow apple, and can be very temperamental. Many of our stands now cook with honeycrisp, and honeycrisp apple pies are a definite fan favorite! One of our local growers now produces candycrisp apples, another new variety on the market. The candy crisp comes in later than does the honeycrisp. 18 • WHKP’s 2020 Apple Harvest Magazine www.whkp.com We salute this year’s “Apple Harvest Magazine” Grower of the Year... Jimmy Nix “ We have been truly blessed, and I thank God everyday. e Allen Nix (left). ” Jimmy Nix (right) and wife Fay ~ Jimmy Nix Jimmy Nix, a second-generation farmer, grew up in the farming business. In fact, his family farmed right here in Henderson County, just as his sons – Brent and Mark – do today! And for many years, Jimmy sold chemicals to the local farmers in addition to growing and selling his own apple crop. Years ago, operating from a small shed on the property, the Nix family picked, graded and hand-boxed their apples for sale. Today, Jimmy Nix & Sons Apples owns and operates one of the largest – and the oldest – apple houses in apple country. In 1983 Jimmy was able to purchase the roadside building. After major repairs and renovations, he opened for business in the fall of 1984. Now – 36 years later – he has also added his own cold storage units so he can keep apples longer. This allows Jimmy to have the ever-popular honeycrisp apple still available long after the other local markets sell out. And a few years back, Jimmy and his family expanded their apple business by acquiring an additional packing house and cold storage facility on Pilot Mountain Road.
www.whkp.com WHKP’s 2020 Apple Harvest Magazine • 19 under The “roadside building” (above). renovation in 1983-4 The packing house “today” (right). The business and the farming have always been a family operation. Jimmy’s wife of 47 years, Faye Allen Nix, his son Brent and wife Tammy, as well as son Mark and wife Charlene, are also active in the business. They have three grandchildren – Gracie, Alivia and Mason. Jimmy Nix & Sons Apples is located at 3642 Chimney Rock Road and is now open for the apple season. In addition to apples, they have peaches, pears and other vegetables. They also carry local jams, jellies, honey and the like. From growing, to grading, to picking, to selling at market, Jimmy Nix has seen all facets of the apple business. One of the testaments to the success of Jimmy is the many returning customers – both wholesale and retail – that choose to get their apples from the Nix family annually. Pastor Dan Blackwell of Dana Baptist Church says, “Jimmy is a mighty fine fellow – faithful to the church, and loved by many!” Local apple grower Deb Lyda stated, “Jimmy is a wonderful neighbor and helpful to the community. His apple growing skills are among the very best in our profession.” Proverbs 16:3 Commit to the Lord whatever you do and he will establish your plans.

28 • WHKP’s 2020 Apple Harvest Magazine www.whkp.com How ‘Bout Them Apples? Henderson County first saw settlers moving here back in 1783. These folks brought with them seeds for vegetables and flowers, hogs, chickens, and cows… but, more importantly, most all of these settlers brought fruit tree seedlings. William Mills has been credited with starting the apple industry here in Henderson County, though many dispute that he was the original “Johnny Appleseed” for the county. Mills did name many of the areas in the county, including Fruitland – one of the many apple-producing areas of Henderson County. In 1860 the first mention of fruit as a “money crop” appears. Early apple varieties included: Ben Davis, Arkansas Black, Carolina Red June, Fried Sweet, Green Cheese, Grimes Golden, Green Pippin, Hoover, Hollow Leg, Jonathon, Limbertwig, May Apple, Rome Beauty, Sheepnose, Winesap, Wolf River, and Yellow Transparent. It is interesting to note that many of these original apples are still grown in Henderson County today. In the 1920s local grower William Dalton began to experiment with new apple varieties and is credited with developing the King Luscious apple. By the 1930s growers were buying trucks to haul all the Henderson County apples to market. Melvin Lane opened the first refrigerated apple house in Henderson County in the 1940s. Prior to this some growers packed apples in ice for transport. In 1946 the Apple Festival originated – and this was about the same year the first tractors appeared in the county. After WWII truckers from near by southern states began coming to Henderson County to buy apples and haul them across the country. The 1950s saw apples booming and that is when the first cardboard box for apples appeared. Prior to that, it was wooden crates. New apples have arrived now in the county – the ever-popular Honeycrisp, Pink Lady, Mutsu and many others. Our local growers still work 15-18 hours a day during picking time, and pray for no hail or late frost.
