Early Literacy Tip: Singing Singing is a great way to help children get ready to read, because it slows language down and helps them to hear the sounds that make up words. Can’t carry a tune? Don’t worry, your child doesn’t care! Here are five tips to get you singing with your child: 1. Preschoolers love to be silly! Play with words - make up nonsense words that rhyme with the lyrics to your favorite song. Learning to rhyme helps children sound out words as they are learning to read. 2. When we sing nursery rhymes with children, we expose them to words they don’t hear in normal conversation. When is the last time you fetched a pail of water? This helps build their vocabulary. 3. Sing together by sharing songbooks – try “Row, row, row your boat” by Jane Cabrera or “Pete the Cat: the wheels on the bus.” 4. Sing the Itsy-Bitsy Spider together. When we sing songs with a logical sequence, we help our children learn how stories work. Try pausing in the middle of the song and asking your child what happens next. 5. Is your voice getting tired? Listening to music together and talking about what you hear helps children develop listening skills and the ability to focus. Paying attention is a learned skill!
