Fourth Sunday of Easter May 8, 2022 Devine Service Setting 4 Sanctuary, CarChurchFM 90.5 & Facebook Services at 9:45 a.m. Grace and Peace are yours, from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ! Welcome to Worship! Alleluia! Christ is Risen! The word Alleluia has been absent from our church for the last 40 days. The word means "Praise Yahweh/Praise the Lord", and is used in times of victory, jubilation, and abundant thanksgiving. During Lent we repent in dust and ashes, grieving our sin and turning to the cross of Christ. But this morning, the Alleluias ring again in our sanctuary as we celebrate the greatest victory of all time, the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. Today our joy knows no bounds as we celebrate "the first, the last, the living one". In fact, it seems as if we are trying to put as many alleluias as possible into this service! So, sing loud, sing with joy, sing knowing that Christ is risen, and you too will rise! Visitors, welcome to Ascension! We are so glad to have you here. If it is your first time here, please take a moment to say hello to our pastor. He would love to meet you. Feel free to ask an usher or any of our members if you have any questions about the service. If today is a communion Sunday, we invite you forward to receive the sign of the cross and words of blessing during the distribution of communion. Pastor would love to talk with you about our adult instruction class and communion! If you are visiting and desire to commune, please speak with Pastor before service. Peace be with you! ~ Pastor Ulm Easter Acclamation P Alleluia! Christ is risen! C He is risen indeed! Alleluia! Welcome & Announcements
Sharing of Peace P The peace of the Lord be you with always. C And also with you. (Congregation will share the peace of the Lord with one another) Opening Hymn He’s Risen, He’s Risen LSB 480 1 He’s risen, He’s risen, Christ Jesus, the Lord; He opened death’s prison, the_incarnate, true Word. Break forth, hosts of heaven, in jubilant song And earth, sea, and mountain their praises prolong. 2 The foe was triumphant when on Calvary The Lord of creation was nailed to the tree. In Satan’s domain did the hosts shout and jeer, For Jesus was slain, whom the evil ones fear. 3 But short was their triumph; the Savior arose, And death, hell, and Satan He vanquished, His foes. The conquering Lord lifts His banner on high; He lives, yes, He lives, and will nevermore die. 4 O, where is your sting, death? We fear you no more; Christ rose, and now open is fair Eden’s door. For all our transgressions His blood does atone; Redeemed and forgiven, we now are His own. D 5 Then sing your hosannas and raise your glad voice; Proclaim the blest tidings that all may rejoice. Laud, honor, and praise to the Lamb that was slain: With Father and Spirit He ever shall reign. Text: © 1941 Concordia Publishing House. Used by permission: LSB Hymn License no. 110004483
Confession and Absolution The sign of the cross T may be made by all in remembrance of their Baptism. P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. Matthew 28:19b C Amen. P Our help is in the name of the Lord, C who made heaven and earth. Psalm 124:8 P If You, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand? C But with You there is forgiveness; therefore You are feared. Psalm 130:3-4 P Since we are gathered to hear God’s Word, call upon Him in prayer and praise, and receive the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ in the fellowship of this altar, let us first consider our unworthiness and confess before God and one another that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed, and that we cannot free ourselves from our sinful condition. Together as His people let us take refuge in the infinite mercy of God, our heavenly Father, seeking His grace for the sake of Christ, and saying: God, be merciful to me, a sinner. Silence for reflection on God’s Word and for self-examination. C Almighty God, have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins, and lead us to everlasting life. Amen. P Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. John 20:19-23 C Amen.

This is the feast of victory for our God. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Prayer of the Day 2 Timothy 4:22 P The Lord be with you. C And also with you. P Let us pray: Almighty God, merciful Father, since You have wakened from death the Shepherd of Your sheep, grant us Your Holy Spirit that when we hear the voice of our Shepherd we may know Him who calls us each by name and follow where He leads; through the same Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C Amen. First Reading Acts 20:17-35 Now from Miletus [Paul] sent to Ephesus and called the elders of the church to come to him. And when they came to him, he said to them: “You yourselves know how I lived among you the whole time from the first day that I set foot in Asia, serving the Lord with all humility and with tears and with trials that happened to me through the plots of the Jews; how I did not shrink from declaring to you anything that was profitable, and teaching you in public and from house to house, testifying both to Jews and to Greeks of repentance toward God and of faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. And now, behold, I am going to Jerusalem, constrained by the Spirit, not knowing what will happen to me there, except that the Holy Spirit testifies to me in every city that imprisonment and afflictions await me. But I do not account my life of any value nor as precious to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God. And
now, behold, I know that none of you among whom I have gone about proclaiming the kingdom will see my face again. Therefore I testify to you this day that I am innocent of the blood of all of you, for I did not shrink from declaring to you the whole counsel of God. Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God, which he obtained with his own blood. I know that after my departure fierce wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; and from among your own selves will arise men speaking twisted things, to draw away the disciples after them. Therefore be alert, remembering that for three years I did not cease night or day to admonish everyone with tears. And now I commend you to God and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified. I coveted no one’s silver or gold or apparel. You yourselves know that these hands ministered to my necessities and to those who were with me. In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’” L This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. How Beautiful are the Feet Bob Zellmer Epistle Reading Revelation 7:9-17 After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands, and crying out with a loud voice, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!” And all the
angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, saying, “Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen.” Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, “Who are these, clothed in white robes, and from where have they come?” I said to him, “Sir, you know.” And he said to me, “These are the ones coming out of the great tribulation. They have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. “Therefore they are before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple; and he who sits on the throne will shelter them with his presence. They shall hunger no more, neither thirst anymore; the sun shall not strike them, nor any scorching heat. For the Lamb in the midst of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of living water, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.” L This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Please Stand if You Are Able Alleluia (sung) LSB 205 John 20:19-31 C Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. These things are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
Holy Gospel John 10:22-30 P The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the 10th Chapter. C Glory to You, O Lord. At that time the Feast of Dedication took place at Jerusalem. It was winter, and Jesus was walking in the temple, in the colonnade of Solomon. So the Jews gathered around him and said to him, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly.” Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in my Father’s name bear witness about me, but you do not believe because you are not part of my flock. My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. I and the Father are one.” P This is the Gospel of the Lord. Service of the Sacrament If you are visiting Ascension this morning, know that it means the world to us that you are here. During the distribution of Communion, we invite you forward to receive the sign of the cross and words of blessing. Pastor would love to talk with you about our adult instruction class and communion! If you are visiting and desire to commune, please speak with Pastor before service. Please Stand If You Are Able Proper Preface (spoken) P The Lord be with you. 2 Timothy 4:22 C And also with you. P Lift up your hearts. Colossians 3:1 C We lift them to the Lord. P Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. Psalm 136 C It is right to give Him thanks and praise. P It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God. And most especially are we bound to praise You on this day for the glorious resurrection of Your Son, Jesus Christ, the very Paschal Lamb, who was sacrificed for us and bore the sins of the world. By His dying He has destroyed death, and by His rising again He has restored to us everlasting life. Therefore, with Mary Magdalene, Peter and John, and with all the witnesses of the resurrection, with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying:
Sanctus (sung) LSB 208 Isaiah 6:3, Matthew 21:9 C Holy, holy, holy Lord God of Sabaoth adored; Heav’n and earth with full acclaim shout the glory of Your name. Sing hosanna in the highest, sing hosanna to the Lord; Truly blest is He who comes in the name of the Lord! Prayer of Thanksgiving P Blessed are You, Lord of heaven and earth, for You have had mercy on us and given Your only-begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life In Your righteous judgment You condemned the sin of Adam and Eve, who ate the forbidden fruit, and You justly barred them and all their children from the tree of life. Yet, in Your great mercy, You promised salvation by a second Adam, Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, and made His cross a life-giving tree for all who trust in Him. We give You thanks for the redemption You have prepared for us through Jesus Christ. Grant us Your Holy Spirit that we may faithfully eat and drink of the fruits of His cross and receive the blessings of forgiveness, life, and salvation that come to us in His body and blood. C Amen. The Words of Our Lord Matthew 26:26-28; Mark 14:22-24 Luke 22:19-20; 1 Corinthians 11:23-25 P Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My T body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.” In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My T blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”
Pax Domini (The Peace of the Lord) John 20:19 P The peace of the Lord be with you always. C Amen. Agnus Dei (sung) LSB 210 John 1:29 C 1 O Jesus Christ, true Lamb of God, You take the sin of the world away; O Jesus Christ, true Lamb of God, Have mercy on us, Lord, we pray. 2 O Jesus Christ, true Lamb of God, You take the sin of the world away; Have mercy on us, Jesus Christ, And grant us peace, O Lord, we pray. Distribution Distribution Hymns I Am the Bread of Life I am the bread of life. He who comes to me shall not hunger; he who believes in me shall not thirst. No one can come to me unless the Father draw him. And I will raise him up, and I will raise him up, and I will raise him up on the last day. The bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world, and he who eats of this bread, he shall live for ever, he shall live for ever.
And I will raise him up, and I will raise him up, and I will raise him up on the last day. Unless you eat of the flesh of the Son of Man and drink of his blood, and drink of his blood, you shall not have life within you. And I will raise him up, and I will raise him up, and I will raise him up on the last day. I am the resurrection, I am the life. He who believes in me even if he die, he shall live for ever. And I will raise him up, and I will raise him up, and I will raise him up on the last day. Yes, Lord, I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who has come into the world. Prayers of the Church Heavenly Father, in Your name Your Son purchased us with His own most holy blood, and He now leads us through the gate of death to our eternal home with You. As the sheep of His fold, inspire us to hear His voice gladly and to follow Him steadfastly through every tribulation. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer. Lord God, Shepherd of souls, Your servant Paul entrusted his flock to the care of faithful men, urging them to follow him in the way of Christ. Bless Your Church [here/today] under the care of her pastors, and instill in them all wisdom, fortitude, humility and grace. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer. O Lord, You have provided us with the gift of family. Bless those who have shown us a mother’s love and nurtured our lives from childhood. Bless and protect all mothers with child, all those who have suffered miscarriage or the death of a child, and all those who have yearned for a child and lived with the pain of this unfulfilled longing. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer. Compassionate Lord, You will not allow any power or enemy to triumph over Your saving purpose or snatch Your lambs from Your hand. Give us wise and faithful leaders who will govern in our land according to Your Law and defend the lives of the unborn, the orphaned, the widowed and the aged. Bless all those who make, administer and judge our laws, that they may not hinder Your purpose. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer. Gracious God, You have not forgotten us in our afflictions or abandoned us in our weakness. Deliver the sick and suffering according to Your will, and give Your comfort to the dying, especially to those in our prayers and thoughts. Guard us against despair, and grant us patience in the days of our trouble as we await Your perfect healing. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer.
Eternal Lord, by Your grace bless all who receive our Lord’s body and blood in the Sacrament this day. As they receive the same body and blood given into death and raised again for their justification, grant them the joy of the forgiveness of sins and the power of an endless life. Help them by this Sacrament to live out their baptismal life, dying in repentance and being raised in the faith. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer. Lord, enthroned in heaven, You gather Your saints into the shelter of Your presence, making them white in the blood of the Lamb. Keep us faithful throughout our lives here, and bring us through death to join them in the ceaseless praises of heaven. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer. All this we ask in the name of Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. While it can be difficult for us all to attend Bible Study every week, I wanted to provide you with an additional way to engage with God's Word as you go about your week. Each Tuesday, a new episode of "Theology Top 10" will be released on our church website, YouTube and Facebook page. Podcasts are great for listening while you drive, work out, or do the dishes. Go to https://ascensionnortholmsted.org/top10 or our Facebook/ YouTube pages to check out the first episode. CANARY'S BIBLE STUDY WEDNESDAYS MAY 18, JUNE 1 & JUNE 8 @ 6:30 pm As part of our 2022 Ministry Plan, the congregation committed to increasing Bible Study attendance and off-site ministry activities. Beginning on May 18, we will be holding a Wednesday evening study at Canary's at 28981 Lorain Rd. We will meet outside at 6:30, and enjoy some dinner, casual Bible study, and leave a big tip to bless our waiter/waitress. If you are interested, please contact Pastor so we know how big of a table to reserve! We will begin this study with a 3 week "pilot" to evaluate how often to have it, etc.

Saturday Reflection In Christ, all things are made new. Gentiles once spurned from the promises of God are baptized and made recipients of forgiveness and eternal life. They are no longer alien to God. Former things, antiquated caste systems, are null and void. New things are imminent. The resurrection of Jesus deprives mourning, crying, and dying of their power. The unleashing of the Holy Spirit changes lingering sorrow into joy, ensuring the newness of all things in heaven and on earth. BEST WAY TO REACH PASTOR 1. Phone: 330-419-2720 2.
