It all began in 1972, when a group of visionary artists led by Joyce Johnson launched our creative community in a historic barn, still in active use on the Castle Hill campus. We’ve grown considerably since then. Now we deliver up to 200 summer workshops at the Castle Hill and Edgewood Farm campuses; off-season, our Artist in Residence program, free workshops for seniors and local students and the annual International Encaustic Conference keep our studios and residences buzzing. As we begin to look at our 50th year history, we look back with thanks for the many hands that built the Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill. Working together, artists, administrators, volunteers and donors have supported us from dream to reality. As we move forward, education, openness, and community remain our key values. Today, thanks to the support and hard work of those many hands (thanks to you all) we stand on a solid foundation, eager to build the future. Today, we approach our 50th anniversary with gratitude, pride and a great deal of optimism. We hope you consider a gift to Castle Hill to help reach our anniversary goal. We are more than half way there! ~ The Castle Hill Community 2 TRURO CENTER FOR THE ARTS AT CASTLE HILL
CONTACTS US: OUR PROGRAMS Castle Hill Campus 10 Meetinghouse Road, Truro, MA Edgewood Farm Campus 3 Edgewood Way, Truro, MA Mailing Address: PO Box 756, Truro, MA 02666 email: info@castlehill.org / phone: 508.349.7511 Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill has served a single purpose for 50 years: to create an inclusive and supportive arts community by providing a wide range of artistic experiences to students at all levels of ability. Energized by a faculty of distinguished artists and writers and enlivened by a welcoming and engaging community, Castle Hill offers workshops, lectures, exhibitions, performances, special events and artist residencies. In our exquisitely beautiful rural setting, we strive to provide unique and inspiring learning experiences to all who come here. WORKSHOPS IN-PERSON & ON-LINE Workshops take place on both campuses, so please check the material list as to where your class will take place. Most workshops are in person but some are on-line on Zoom. We generally send a link on Friday before the monday class and again the morning of the workshop. To take advantage of the Zoom classes one needs acess to a computer. ARTIST RESIDENCIES We offer Artist in Residency Program in the spring and fall at Edgewood Farm. Additionally, Castle Hill’s Ceramic Artists in Residence program runs from January to March and provides emerging artists with the time and space they need to develop their work. Residents are provided with furnished housing, studio space in a shared studio, and an exhibition upon completion of the residency. Applications are available online. EDGEWOOD FARM This is our newest campus of Truro Center for the Arts, it is 7.5 acres and it provides some very needed housing for our students and faculty. It also houses a painting studio, a new green printmaking studio, Sam’s Stage, 3 historic buildings including our finance office, and a great place to paint in the meadow. NEW PERFORMANCE VENUE: SAM’S STAGE Truro Center for the Arts at Edgewood Farm built a beautiful stage in 2021 to be able to offer an array of performances in dance, music and poetry readings. This will be it’s inaugural full summer of programming. The stage is named Sam’s Stage after Sam Miller who was an incredible advocate and supporter of dance. Special thanks to Carmi Bee for designing it. CASTE HILL CAMPUS The campus at 10 Meetinghouse Road is considered the “main campus” and houses our administrative offices, the Castle Hill gallery, the ceramic studio, a painting studio, a dark room, jewelry & fiber studio and the wood fired pizza oven. 3
Letter from the Board Presidents We are honored to be serving as co-Presidents of Castle Hill in this special year, when we celebrate our 50th anniversary by offering excellent wide-ranging programming for artists of all backgrounds, experience and interests. To mark the occasion, we are delighted to inaugurate a new building at Edgewood Farm with a new first-class printmaking studio and a spacious second-floor flexible space for painting and other workshops. The new building overlooks and helps to frame the meadow at Edgewood Farm and the outdoor performing arts stage that was completed last July. This brings to eight the number of working art spaces available for the dozens of workshops described in this catalog. This year’s selection of workshops will be taught by the most diverse group of distinguished teachers we have ever assembled. It will cover virtually every art medium from painting through sculpture, printmaking, installation, fiber arts, quilt-making, paper-making, even Judy Pfaff teaching welding! In addition, Castle Hill offers what we believe is the finest ceramic program on Cape Cod, with gas, electric, salt and raku kilns and the only wood-fired kiln on the Cape. The 2022 offerings are rich and deep and our anniversary will be marked with special events and programs throughout the summer. As a final note, we learned over the past two years how to run our workshops and campuses safely and comfortably, in accordance with the best guidance available for protecting against covid. While, of course, we hope that it will not be necessary to institute special measures this summer, we are confident of our ability to create and maintain a safe environment. We hope to see you this summer at a Castle Hill workshop or event and to celebrate our 50th anniversary together! Rob Silverstein | Ellyn Weiss Co-Presidents | Board of Directors 4 TRURO CENTER FOR THE ARTS AT CASTLE HILL
Letter from the Executive Artistic Director Welcome Every year at Castle Hill is a wonderful adventure, but this is a particularly special year: Castle Hill’s 50th anniversary and my 20th year as Executive Artistic Director. Those are two major milestones in one year and I think we have put together a summer worthy of the occasion. The past 2 years have been quite challenging with the worldwide pandemic, planning, cancelling, regrouping, reformatting and planning again. Most people have no idea how challenging that is for a non-profit organization, but we have prevailed and have come out stronger. During the past year, even during Covid, we built a wood-fired kiln at Edgewood Farm and an award-winning outdoor stage. This winter we built a brand new beautiful building that will house our new green printmaking studio and a 2nd floor flexible painting studio. It is exciting to be planning workshops for all these new beautiful spaces. When we think of learning, we think about what we can offer that is both exciting, innovative and different. This year our offerings are more diverse than ever including 37 workshops with faculty who have never been to Castle Hill before! We are especially pleased to launch the Osborne Fellowship program with Morgan State University, a 160-year old HBCU in Baltimore, to bring emerging black artists who have either just graduated or are students to spend time focusing on their artwork as Artists in Residence at Edgewood Farm. We have a terrific line-up of workshops and events to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Castle Hill. This year’s Woody English Distinguished Artist and Writers Chair is Reginald Dwayne Betts a poet, lawyer and scholar, author of Felon, a book of poetry, and a winner this year of a MacArthur Fellowship award. This summer will also feature an improvisational quilt making workshop with nationally known artist Ed Johnetta Miller. We have a star studded group of Ceramic Artists coming from across the country: Adam Field, Jack Troy, Gay Smith, Wes Brown and William Baker, just to name a few. Printmaking, sculpture and the writers this summer are truly amazing. Take your time in looking at the catalog. Sign up for more than one! I personally want to thank you for your support of this great institution. And special thanks to the board of directors who have put their heart and soul into Castle Hill for 5 decades and to all that come and get inspired, either from a workshop, a lecture or an art opening or just walking around the grounds. In solidarity! Cherie Mittenthal Executive Artistic Director 5

NO FEAR PAINTING Instructor: Mary Giammarino $495 May 2 - May 6 / 9am - 12pm In this course we will be studying and applying many of the fundamental techniques of plein air painting. Together, we will investigate light and its effect on our visual field and how to translate that onto a canvas. We will not employ formulas; there is no “correct” way to paint and no such thing as a “mistake.” It is my goal to equip you with the tools necessary for a lifetime of exploration with Plein Air painting. Mary Giammarino’s devotion to light and color is evident in all of her paintings. While her work is influenced by the impressionist palette of the Cape, her work is less idealized and more contemporary by design. Mary’s plein-air paintings reflect her passion and devotion to capturing the exquisite drama of nature’s fleeting moods. Returning to Provincetown to paint and study the Cape light every spring since 1989, she has had numerous solo shows and exhibitions in Prov- incetown, Philadelphia and Vermont. Her work is in private collections and museums as well as all over Europe. Mary studied fine art at Greenfield Community College in Massa- chusetts and continued her art studies with a scholarship at the University of Massachusetts. Today, Mary carries on the tradition by teaching plein-air painting classes on the Cape, in Vermont and on trips to Europe. SCULPTURE WITH INVASIVES (KIDS & ADULTS) Instructor: Justin Cifello Kids Group, Monday, May 2 / 3pm - 5pm $25 Adult Group, Tuesday, May 3 / 10am - 2pm $100 Join natural artist Justin Cifello in making sculpture with in- vasive species. We will discuss the process for working with these unusual materials, the importance of containing their spread, and making large works like the Serpent at Castle Hill. Participants will get to experiment with the materials and build smaller pieces, either to add to the Serpent or to take home. No prior sculpture experience is needed! Participants should be aware that these are raw natural materials, and gloves and work clothes are strongly recommended. Justin Cifello is an organic farmer, amateur naturalist, and aspiring artist, based in Buzzards Bay. While always drawn to the creative arts, he came to sculpture by accident. In helping to reclaim field edges from invasive plants, he learned to re- spect their strength and flexibility. Beginning with wreaths, he experimented with larger works, abstract and representative. His monsters and spheres crafted from invasive species have appeared in public art shows from Provincetown to Western Massachusetts. 19

PAINTING • MIXED MEDIA • DRAWING WORKING WITH COLD WAX MEDIUM Instructor: Carol Pelletier $495 June 20 - 24 / 9am - 12pm This workshop explores the various properties of cold wax, used as a stand-alone medium or combined with photo- graphs, collage on panel, ink drawings, watercolor, powdered pigment and oil paint. Cold wax has many of the luminous properties seen in encaustic painting but is flexible for the artist on the move. Unlike heated encaustic, cold wax is used without heat and does not need to be fused. You will learn to use a variety of tools to create textures and layers, to create depth in your imagery. The workshop also deals with issues of color theory and how it pertains to the development of a painting. Students are encouraged to work on a variety of surfaces, including panel, watercolor/printmaking papers, photographs and canvas that can be mounted to panel. Demonstrations will begin each session, and each partici- pant will receive one-on-one feedback. This workshop is for beginning to advanced artists. There will be individual attention and direction throughout the workshop. 22 TRURO CENTER FOR THE ARTS AT CASTLE HILL
“Daphne Confar’s paintings are the progeny of an artist whose storytelling skills match her facility with a brush. Her portraits look like characters in a Garrison Keillor monologue: self-effacing, befuddled, and guarded people, sharply drawn with tender shining souls.” - Kate McQuaid, Boston Globe Daphne has her BFA in Drawing and Painting from Laguna College of Art and Design and her MFA in Painting from Boston University. She has shown her work in galleries from coast to coast and in Europe, exhibiting at the William Scott Gallery in Provincetown for the past 20 years. We will attempt to learn more about who we are as a person and as an artist, about the world of which we are a part, what we care to share and what we are willing to contribute. In the workshop we will, amongst other tech- niques, employ secular, non-traditional, Buddhist-based mindfulness meditation and breathing exercises to go along with your art practice. The goal is to raise awareness, allow yourself to open to what you don’t know, practice learning and unlearning, and free yourself from habits and conven- tions. The desired result will be your gaining insight, opening more to the complexity of everything. The goal is not to focus on sharpening your pencil but on sharpening your mind. If meditation can be your anchor, art can be your grounding. The one informs the other.
