FOR THE ARTS CELEBRATING 50 YEARS! - 2022 EVENTS & WORKSHOPS - Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill
It all began in 1972, when a group of visionary artists led by Joyce Johnson
launched our creative community in a historic barn, still in active use on the Castle
Hill campus. We’ve grown considerably since then. Now we deliver up to 200
summer workshops at the Castle Hill and Edgewood Farm campuses; off-season,
our Artist in Residence program, free workshops for seniors and local students and
the annual International Encaustic Conference keep our studios and residences
    buzzing.

As we begin to look at our 50th year history, we look back with thanks for the many
hands that built the Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill. Working together, artists,
administrators, volunteers and donors have supported us from dream to reality. As
we move forward, education, openness, and community remain our key values.
Today, thanks to the support and hard work of those many hands (thanks to you all)
we stand on a solid foundation, eager to build the future.

Today, we approach our 50th anniversary with gratitude, pride and a great deal of
optimism. We hope you consider a gift to Castle Hill to help reach our anniversary
goal. We are more than half way there!

Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill has served a single purpose for 50 years:
to create an inclusive and supportive arts community by providing a wide range
of artistic experiences to students at all levels of ability. Energized by a faculty
of distinguished artists and writers and enlivened by a welcoming and engaging
community, Castle Hill offers workshops, lectures, exhibitions, performances,
special events and artist residencies. In our exquisitely beautiful rural setting, we
strive to provide unique and inspiring learning experiences to all who come here.

WORKSHOPS IN-PERSON & ON-LINE
Workshops take place on both campuses, so please check the material list as to where
your class will take place. Most workshops are in person but some are on-line on Zoom.
We generally send a link on Friday before the monday class and again the morning of the
workshop. To take advantage of the Zoom classes one needs acess to a computer.

ARTIST RESIDENCIES
We offer Artist in Residency Program in the spring and fall at Edgewood Farm. Additionally,
Castle Hill’s Ceramic Artists in Residence program runs from January to March and
provides emerging artists with the time and space they need to develop their work.
Residents are provided with furnished housing, studio space in a shared studio, and an
exhibition upon completion of the residency. Applications are available online.

EDGEWOOD FARM
This is our newest campus of Truro Center for the Arts, it is 7.5 acres and it provides some
very needed housing for our students and faculty. It also houses a painting studio, a new
green printmaking studio, Sam’s Stage, 3 historic buildings including our finance office,
and a great place to paint in the meadow.

NEW PERFORMANCE VENUE: SAM’S STAGE
Truro Center for the Arts at Edgewood Farm built a beautiful stage in 2021 to be able
to offer an array of performances in dance, music and poetry readings. This will be it’s
inaugural full summer of programming. The stage is named Sam’s Stage after Sam Miller
who was an incredible advocate and supporter of dance. Special thanks to Carmi Bee for
designing it.

CASTE HILL CAMPUS
The campus at 10 Meetinghouse Road is considered the “main campus” and houses our
administrative offices, the Castle Hill gallery, the ceramic studio, a painting studio, a dark
room, jewelry & fiber studio and the wood fired pizza oven.

                                                                                                 3
Letter from the Board Presidents

We are honored to be serving as co-Presidents of Castle Hill
in this special year, when we celebrate our 50th anniversary by
offering excellent wide-ranging programming for artists of all
backgrounds, experience and interests. To mark the occasion,
we are delighted to inaugurate a new building at Edgewood
Farm with a new first-class printmaking studio and a spacious
second-floor flexible space for painting and other workshops.
The new building overlooks and helps to frame the meadow
at Edgewood Farm and the outdoor performing arts stage
that was completed last July. This brings to eight the number
of working art spaces available for the dozens of workshops
         described in this catalog.
This year’s selection of workshops will be taught by the
most diverse group of distinguished teachers we have ever
assembled. It will cover virtually every art medium from
painting through sculpture, printmaking, installation, fiber arts,
quilt-making, paper-making, even Judy Pfaff teaching welding!
In addition, Castle Hill offers what we believe is the finest
ceramic program on Cape Cod, with gas, electric, salt and
raku kilns and the only wood-fired kiln on the Cape. The 2022
offerings are rich and deep and our anniversary will be marked
with special events and programs throughout the summer.
As a final note, we learned over the past two years how to
run our workshops and campuses safely and comfortably, in
accordance with the best guidance available for protecting
against covid. While, of course, we hope that it will not be
necessary to institute special measures this summer, we
are confident of our ability to create and maintain a safe
         environment.

We hope to see you this summer at a Castle Hill workshop or
event and to celebrate our 50th anniversary together!

4 TRURO CENTER FOR THE ARTS AT CASTLE HILL
Letter from the Executive Artistic Director

		                        Welcome
Every year at Castle Hill is a wonderful adventure, but this is
a particularly special year: Castle Hill’s 50th anniversary and
my 20th year as Executive Artistic Director. Those are two
major milestones in one year and I think we have put together
a summer worthy of the occasion.
The past 2 years have been quite challenging with the worldwide
pandemic, planning, cancelling, regrouping, reformatting and
planning again. Most people have no idea how challenging
that is for a non-profit organization, but we have prevailed
and have come out stronger. During the past year, even during
Covid, we built a wood-fired kiln at Edgewood Farm and an
award-winning outdoor stage. This winter we built a brand new
beautiful building that will house our new green printmaking
studio and a 2nd floor flexible painting studio. It is exciting to
be planning workshops for all these new beautiful spaces.
When we think of learning, we think about what we can offer
that is both exciting, innovative and different. This year our
offerings are more diverse than ever including 37 workshops
with faculty who have never been to Castle Hill before! We
are especially pleased to launch the Osborne Fellowship
program with Morgan State University, a 160-year old HBCU
in Baltimore, to bring emerging black artists who have either
just graduated or are students to spend time focusing on their
artwork as Artists in Residence at Edgewood Farm.
We have a terrific line-up of workshops and events to celebrate
the 50th Anniversary of Castle Hill. This year’s Woody English
Distinguished Artist and Writers Chair is Reginald Dwayne
Betts a poet, lawyer and scholar, author of Felon, a book of
poetry, and a winner this year of a MacArthur Fellowship award.
This summer will also feature an improvisational quilt making
workshop with nationally known artist Ed Johnetta Miller. We
have a star studded group of Ceramic Artists coming from
across the country: Adam Field, Jack Troy, Gay Smith, Wes
Brown and William Baker, just to name a few. Printmaking,
sculpture and the writers this summer are truly amazing. Take
your time in looking at the catalog. Sign up for more than one!
I personally want to thank you for your support of this great
institution. And special thanks to the board of directors who
have put their heart and soul into Castle Hill for 5 decades and
to all that come and get inspired, either from a workshop, a
lecture or an art opening or just walking around the grounds.

		                      In solidarity!

2022 TRURO CENTER FOR
     THE ARTS WORKSHOPS

Cape Cod’s beautiful coastal landscape is the setting for Truro Center for
the Arts at Castle Hill, a place where such noted artists as Hans Hofmann,
Edward Hopper, Robert Motherwell, and Edwin Dickinson were inspired by
the atmospheric light reflected from the sea that surrounds us. Castle Hill
offers week-long workshops in drawing, painting, and mixed media that
are sure to inspire your art practice, and introduce you to new friends and
     fellow artists.

Most workshops are Monday through Friday, but please check the dates and times
as that does vary. Students registered for workshops with open studios are welcome
to work independently in the afternoon following their class, Monday through
Thursday. On Friday there is no open studio.

Material or studio fees may apply to particular workshops, please see your materials
list for details. Fees are due at the time of registration or on the first day of class.

Our Committee on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility (DEIA)

Over the last two years, our DEIA Committee has been making more concrete
our commitment to respect and value diverse life experiences and heritages and
ensure that all voices here are valued and heard. Our work has made an observable
difference in the ways Truro Center for the Arts approaches hiring, promotions,
leadership cultivation, programming, events, systems, accommodations, access,
and inclusion. We welcome new members and fresh ideas as we move together
toward a fully diverse, equitable, inclusive, and accessible Truro Center for the
         Arts at Castle Hill.

COLOR AND FIGURE
Instructor: Jo Hay
April 25 - 29 / 9am - 12pm $485
In this class, students will focus their attention on making one
large painting from a week-long pose of the human figure.
Daily drawing exercises will be used to enhance the students
understanding of the geometry and compositional elements
of their painting set-up. Emphasis will be on gaining control
of the color palette and making color mixes to successfully
execute a dynamic figure painting. Students will be encour-
aged to photograph their work each day so that they have a
record of their progress for later analysis. Class discussion of
all topics covered will occur throughout.

NO FEAR PAINTING
Instructor: Mary Giammarino $495
May 2 - May 6 / 9am - 12pm
In this course we will be studying and applying many of the
fundamental techniques of plein air painting. Together, we
will investigate light and its effect on our visual field and how
to translate that onto a canvas. We will not employ formulas;
there is no “correct” way to paint and no such thing as a
“mistake.” It is my goal to equip you with the tools necessary
for a lifetime of exploration with Plein Air painting.
Mary Giammarino’s devotion to light and color is evident
in all of her paintings. While her work is influenced by the
impressionist palette of the Cape, her work is less idealized
and more contemporary by design. Mary’s plein-air paintings
reflect her passion and devotion to capturing the exquisite
drama of nature’s fleeting moods. Returning to Provincetown
to paint and study the Cape light every spring since 1989,
she has had numerous solo shows and exhibitions in Prov-
incetown, Philadelphia and Vermont. Her work is in private
collections and museums as well as all over Europe. Mary
studied fine art at Greenfield Community College in Massa-
chusetts and continued her art studies with a scholarship at
the University of Massachusetts. Today, Mary carries on the
tradition by teaching plein-air painting classes on the Cape,
in Vermont and on trips to Europe.

SCULPTURE WITH INVASIVES (KIDS & ADULTS)
Instructor: Justin Cifello
Kids Group, Monday, May 2 / 3pm - 5pm $25
Adult Group, Tuesday, May 3 / 10am - 2pm $100
Join natural artist Justin Cifello in making sculpture with in-
vasive species. We will discuss the process for working with
these unusual materials, the importance of containing their
spread, and making large works like the Serpent at Castle
Hill. Participants will get to experiment with the materials and
build smaller pieces, either to add to the Serpent or to take
home.
No prior sculpture experience is needed! Participants should
be aware that these are raw natural materials, and gloves and
work clothes are strongly recommended.
Justin Cifello is an organic farmer, amateur naturalist, and
aspiring artist, based in Buzzards Bay. While always drawn to
the creative arts, he came to sculpture by accident. In helping
to reclaim field edges from invasive plants, he learned to re-
spect their strength and flexibility. Beginning with wreaths, he
experimented with larger works, abstract and representative.
His monsters and spheres crafted from invasive species have
appeared in public art shows from Provincetown to Western
Massachusetts.

     WEBSITE BUILDING FOR ARTISTS
     Instructor: Jesse Freidin $300
     May 9 - 13 / 1pm - 3pm (EST) ONLINE
This 5-day course is open to artists of any medium who not
only want to learn how to build their own website, but more
importantly, build a website with confidence, professionalism
and strong messaging. We’ll be using the Squarespace only,
as these do-it-yourself platforms are the most contemporary,
well designed and industry standard. You’ll learn how to
write a compelling artist bio, create beautiful and correctly
sized digital images, write a blog that brings in search traffic,
sell online, make a contact page and connect to your social
media, and build a fully functioning website for your art. All
students must have a computer with updated web software,
access to image editing software, and access to a digital
camera or smart phone. Students will receive one-on-one
time with the instructor before presenting their final websites
to the class on the final day.
Jesse Freidin was America’s leading fine art dog photog-
rapher for the past 15 years, and now focuses his attention
on elevating the experience of the queer/tgnc community
through portraiture and interviews. His photography is part of
over 150 private collections. He is a teacher and mentor for
artists looking to market and sell their work effectively and
with authenticity. He is the author of two books: When Dogs
Heal: Powerful Stories of People Living with HIV and the
Dogs That Saved Them, and Finding Shelter.

     INTRO TO BONSAI
     Instructor: Kai Potter $180
     Wednesday, May 25 / 10am - 1pm
Price of the class includes: Nursery stock juniper tree, Bonsai pot-
composite appx 5”x8”x3”, Bonsai soil, and wire.
In this introduction to Bonsai, students will gain an under-
standing of what the art of bonsai is, learn the basics of care,
design and upkeep of a bonsai tree. Bonsai is a lifetime of
learning, and this could be your first step into an otherwise
mysterious art form. During the course of this class, we will
be working with nursery selected material, working though
the process of pruning, making design decisions, styling the
tree, and repotting it in a bonsai pot. By the end of this class,
you will have your own bonsai tree, an understanding of the
principles of bonsai, and confidence in growing and caring
     for your tree.
Kai Potter is a writer, surfer, artist, and garden designer
who has been practicing bonsai for over twenty years. He
has a collection of trees he’s grown, gathered from the wild,
and inherited, all kept in a Japanese-style garden he built in

June 13 – 17 / 9:00am–12:00pm
This course will introduce several different techniques that
highlight the unique qualities of transparent watercolor,
ranging from precise to experimental. With these new skills
in hand, introduced through specific studio projects, you will
create works later in the session using these techniques in
highly individual ways.
Kathryn Myers is a Professor of Art at the University of
Connecticut and has been teaching watercolor for over forty
years. Her paintings of watercolor and gouache explore real
and invented architecture and space. She received her MFA
in painting at the University of Wisconsin.

THE SHAPE OF A WALK:
DRAWING IN AND FROM THE NATURAL WORLD
Instructor: Susan Lyman $495
June 13 - 17 / 9:00am - 12:00pm
“…not focusing on the end destination …having faith that the
path will emerge understep.”- Catherine Ireton
Walking the beautiful Edgewood Farm campus, we will
explore the range of possibilities of “drawing” from, and in
nature. We will work on developing your personal imagery in
both conventional and more ephemeral “drawings” in nature.
Our palette is wide, including representational objects and
drawings in any media to presentational modes of action. You
will be given a list of suggested drawing paper, traditional and
non-traditional “drawing” materials and supplies, and simple
tools. Lyman will also have on hand handmade dune rakes
and various “mark making” materials such as fluorescent
string for ephemeral works. A camera (or smartphone) will be
very useful for collecting ideas and for documentation. The
workshop is open to beginning and advanced students.
Susan Lyman, sculptor and painter, has lived in Province-
town MA since 1981 when she was awarded a Visual Arts
Fellowship at the Fine Arts Work Center. She has exhibited
her work for over 40 years in solo and group exhibitions in
worldwide. She has taught at RISD, Massachusetts College
of Art, Fine Arts Work Center, and University of Michigan,
where she earned her BFA and MFA. Lyman is represented
by Boston Sculptors Gallery where she presented recent
sculpture and paintings in November 2021.

     WORKING WITH COLD WAX MEDIUM
     Instructor: Carol Pelletier $495
     June 20 - 24 / 9am - 12pm
This workshop explores the various properties of cold wax,
used as a stand-alone medium or combined with photo-
graphs, collage on panel, ink drawings, watercolor, powdered
pigment and oil paint. Cold wax has many of the luminous
properties seen in encaustic painting but is flexible for the
artist on the move. Unlike heated encaustic, cold wax is used
without heat and does not need to be fused. You will learn to
use a variety of tools to create textures and layers, to create
depth in your imagery. The workshop also deals with issues
of color theory and how it pertains to the development of a
painting. Students are encouraged to work on a variety of
     surfaces, including panel, watercolor/printmaking papers,
photographs and canvas that can be mounted to panel.
Demonstrations will begin each session, and each partici-
pant will receive one-on-one feedback. This workshop is for
     beginning to advanced artists.
Carol Pelletier is the Chair of Fine Arts and Professor of Art
at Endicott College. She has exhibited in over 60 solo and
group shows nationwide, including the Cape Cod Museum
of Art, Julie Heller East, St. Mary’s University in Halifax, the
Becket Arts Center, the Huntington Museum of Art, the Ogle-
bay Institute, and Soren Christensen to name a few. She has
received three National Endowment for the Arts Grants and a
Mellon Foundation grant and is a Salzburg Fellow. Her work
has been in multiple exhibitions and publications, including
the New American Paintings, Southwest Art Studio Visit and
Creative Quarterly magazines. She is represented by the Cyn-
thia Winings Gallery in Blue Hill, Maine and by Morpeth Con-

OBSERVATION AND IMAGINATION: A LANDSCAPE PAINTING CLASS
     Instructor: Daphne Confar $495
     June 20 - 24 / 9am - 12pm
This class is a fun, low stress, creative approach to land-
scape based on direct observation and imagination. You will
start your painting onsite, using black and white acrylics,
and finish in the studio with oil glazes. We will revisit the site
frequently to inform your work, so there will be a fair amount
     of outdoor observation and painting.
Daphne will teach you her personal technique, which involves
putting down many layers of black and white acrylic, using
thin layers of paint, sanding the layers down with sandpaper,
and then building them up again. There will be individual
attention and direction throughout the workshop.

“Daphne Confar’s paintings are the progeny of an artist
whose storytelling skills match her facility with a brush. Her
portraits look like characters in a Garrison Keillor monologue:
self-effacing, befuddled, and guarded people, sharply drawn
with tender shining souls.” - Kate McQuaid, Boston Globe
Daphne has her BFA in Drawing and Painting from Laguna
College of Art and Design and her MFA in Painting from
Boston University. She has shown her work in galleries from
coast to coast and in Europe, exhibiting at the William Scott
Gallery in Provincetown for the past 20 years. Her work is in

June 27 - July 1 / 9am - 12pm
There is no such thing as a mistake or mishap when it comes
to painting. Learning how to incorporate arbitrary paint
strokes and unintentional marks into your painting will be the
focus of this workshop. Through conscience observation,

                                                                   23

intuitive decision-making, and experimental play, you will
discover new choices for and insight into your work. Working
from still-life and live models, I’ll challenge you with initial
exercises and prompts you can apply to your own style of
painting. This workshop will inspire both beginners and sea-
soned painters. Come curious and leave delighted.

ART AND MINDFULNESS: MAKING THE ART YOU ARE
     Instructor: Bernd Haussmann $695
     June 27 - July 1 / 9am - 12pm, (Open studio)
Together we will engage in an open dialogue exploring how
we retrieve information, process and communicate it to the
outside world. We will attempt to learn more about who we
are as a person and as an artist, about the world of which we
are a part, what we care to share and what we are willing to
contribute. In the workshop we will, amongst other tech-
     niques, employ secular, non-traditional, Buddhist-based
mindfulness meditation and breathing exercises to go along
with your art practice. The goal is to raise awareness, allow
yourself to open to what you don’t know, practice learning
and unlearning, and free yourself from habits and conven-
tions. The desired result will be your gaining insight, opening
more to the complexity of everything. The goal is not to focus
on sharpening your pencil but on sharpening your mind. If
meditation can be your anchor, art can be your grounding.
     The one informs the other.
Bernd Haussmann’s work is visible nationally and inter-
nationally, at galleries and art fairs as well as at non-profit
organizations. His work is part of the collections of numer-

of Art, Lyman Allyn Art Museum, New London, CT; Hunterdon
Museum of Art, Clinton, NJ; Provincetown Art Association and
Museum, Provincetown; Montserrat College of Art; Beverly,
and Danforth Museum of Art, and Stadtmuseum, Tübin-
gen. Haussmann has been involved in numerous interactive
projects and collaborations nationally and abroad, with E.G.
Broad Institute of Harvard and MIT and University of Tue-
bingen. He has also been a mentor and educator at Castle

Instructor: Jamal Thorne $495
July 5 - 8 / 9am - 1pm
What happens when an artist is given the space to work and
the time for a good conversation about our work after finish-
ing for the day? In this class, students of all levels, ranging
from curious beginner to seasoned professional, are invited
to work, experiment, and play with their preferred mediums in
a studio setting. Whether working with large format or small
and intimate modes, students will be given a few hours to ex-
plore their creative impulses. During the studio portion of the
class, the instructor will give guidance and feedback, when
desired, as he works alongside the students. Most important-
ly, the last half-hour of the class will be dedicated to an open
discussion of each student’s work with the goal of cultivat-
ing a community based on support, inspiration, and critical
analysis. Ideally, students will discover their creative identities
and/or gain awareness of deeper levels of an existing creative
identity.
Jamal Thorne is a Boston-based artist who is known for his
use of the drawing medium to investigate and visualize the
nature of performed identity. With massive drawings, Jamal
blends references from popular culture, religious iconogra-
phy, and symbolism, in an attempt to create a possible image
of what our multilayered identities could look like. Born in
Maryland, Jamal Thorne received his B.A. in Photographic
Media from Morgan State University in 2008. Relocated to
Boston he became the pioneering student in a newly formed
cooperative M.F.A. Program between Northeastern University
and The School of the Museum of Fine Art. He has exhibited
his work at venues that include the James E. Lewis Museum

     July 5 - 8 / 10 am - 12 pm EST ONLINE
This up-beat, high-energy class approaches collage from the
perspective of the process of cutting, ripping and pasting
papers to create new and exciting images. We will work with
printed as well as hand-made papers as our source material.
We will work in different sizes, often letting the content of our
image dictate the size of our work. If you are adventurous
and love color and texture, this is the class for you. Works by
contemporary collage artists will be examined throughout the
     class.
Michael Walczak is a high-energy visual artist working in
ink and paper. His love of color, texture, pattern, and line are
present in many of his abstract and narrative works. Michael
believes that collage is best made through a process of
ripping and tearing a variety of homemade papers. His work
ranges in size from 10x10 inches to 4x6 feet. Michael teaches
collage at the Truro Center for the Arts, as well as Studio 17
