A MESSAGE FROM MIKE Greater Long Island Running Club Officers and Executive Board Nobody is more anxious and enthusiastic about the possibility President, Mike Polansky of “live” racing on Long Island than I am. Virtual races are Executive Director, Sue Fitzpatrick a nice stopgap, and our virtual Footsteps for the Frontlines Vice President, Mindy Davidson Half Marathon, 10K and 5K has been far more successful than Vice President, Carl Grossbard* I had predicted but, let’s face it, it’s not the same. Running by Treasurer, Melissa Altschuler yourself or with a small group just doesn’t have the same degree Secretary, Jaime Pita of excitement and enthusiasm as a live race. Coordinator of Development, Ken Carmel Social Media Coordinator, Suzanne Nelson We had hoped to stage the Runner’s Edge Women’s 5K Run Director of Logistics, Christopher Acord presented by Bethpage Federal Credit Union and the Plainview/Syosset Hospitals Heart Director, Caumsett Runs, Carl Grossbard* & Sole 5K as live races this July. Sadly, that is not going to happen, but I do hope that Director, Lazer, Aptheker, Rosella & Yedid Kings Park 15K, you will support our charities – The Opening Word Program and the Hospitals – by Steven Toto participating in those races as virtual runs. Director, Jonas Chiropractic Sports Injury Care Aspire 10K, Director, Heart & Sole Run, Karen Schackner As I write this, we are still hopeful that we may be able to stage the Greenbelt Trail 50K Director, L.I. Greenbelt Trail Run, Nick Palazzo* and 25K Runs on a live basis, but essentially it is all up to Governor Cuomo as to what he Director, Marcum Workplace Challenge, Mindy Davidson will permit for Phase 4 recreational actvities. We have worked on the kind of plans, based on what is being done in other trail races like the Mount Shasta 50 Mile/50K, that would Director, Fred von der Heydt Memorial 6 Hour 60th Birthday Run, Myron Bellovin* allow this event to proceed safely, but I don’t have the answer right now. One thing that Director, L.I. Women’s Run, Jaime Pita you can be sure of – everyone who has registered for the Greenbelt Runs will have the Title Sponsor Runner’s Edge option of getting a refund if we can’t stage them. Co-Directors, Runner’s Edge-TOBAY Triathlon, Ray Farrell, Mindy Davidson Needless to say, we will do our best to stage any races for the remainder of the year Director, Sayville Running Company 10 Mile Run to the that we are allowed to proceed with. Obviously there will have to be adjustments, but Blue Point Brewery, Great South Bay Brewery Runs, Port GLIRC Executive Director Sue Fitzpatrick and her staff, and all our volunteers, have Jeff Brewery Run, Ric Diveglio proven their flexibility in the past, and I have no doubt that they can and will continue Director, TOB Supervisor’s 5K, Mike Polansky to do so in the future. Co-Directors, Rob’s Run, Jim Murray, Sue Fitzpatrick Title Sponsor Lynn Gartner Dunne, LLP On a related note, I was saddened to learn that Jim Cummings and his team have Co Directors, UJA - Federation Race Against Poverty decided that they have no choice but to cancel this year’s Steamtown Marathon. Back in Steve & Holly Jonas, Mindy Davidson the day, Steamtown was my favorite marathon, and the announcement about this year’s Director, Ocean to Sound Relay, Bob Sherman race was a personal downer for me even though it has been ten years since I have been Director Ho Ho Ho Holiday Run: Ric Diveglio able to run in it. I do note, Steamtown being a real class act, that they will be offering Title Sponsor Gold Coast/Steel Equities refunds to everyone. Club & Team Coach, Ed Melnik We are pleased with the success of our weekly Food Drives. The economic chaos Blood Drive Director, Gina Gelman caused by COVID-19 has placed ridiculous demands on local food pantries. It was the Scholarship Program Director, Erica Gassen Club’s decision to focus on the very local food distribution centers that have been almost Membership Director, Sherry Bellovin overwhelmed by the increasing demand from families that simply can’t make ends meet, Senior Feet Coordinator, Bert Jablon* and I think that it was a good choice. Most recently we have focused our efforts on Trustees at Large, Alan Baisch, Amy Goldstein, Scott Wyandanch, a community that seems to have suffered disproportionately during the Fairgrieve, Paul Fetscher, Lou LaFleur, Jossi Fritz-Mauer, Rebecca McDonald, Glenn Morse current crisis. *Denotes Board members Our thanks to everyone who has been so supportive of our Food Drive efforts. I have FOOTNOTES: always believed that runners are caring, giving people, and the bag after bag of groceries, Volume 20, Issue 7, JULY 2020 the supermarket gift cards and the cash donations to the Food Drive make it quite clear Published monthly by FOOTNOTES that my belief was well founded. Ryan told John at the end of last year when he was helping him pick up toys during the Holiday season, that he wanted to run across Long Island. This was a feat that John did back in 1997, and a pinnacle challenge that Ryan had always wanted to try. The idea sat in Ryan’s head for a while but was something that he became very serious about as 2020 began to unfold. After coming back from graduate school in North Dakota, Ryan and John decided to move forward on this idea and make it a reality and set a date of Tuesday, July 7th. Onthat day, starting at midnight, Ryan is going to set out from Montauk Point and run all the way to the Mike and Kimberly Brooklyn Bridge before midnight the next day. Ryan’s route will follow along Montauk Highway, Merrick Road, Congratulations to Bob and Wantagh Avenue (past the John Theissen Children’s Foundation Barbara Haughn and family on Jerusalem Avenue, Hempstead Turnpike, Jamaica Avenue , on the engagement of their Myrtle Avenue, through downtown Brooklyn, and then over the daughter Lisa to Joey Smith on Brooklyn Bridge.
