Yanks up 3-1! Regardless, it will be a tough road and I hope that I will not be wishing that I had written this entirely on the British Open. I will stop rambling about soccer, for a while, and talk about a midsummer classic. The All-Star game will be played on July 14 at The Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati, Ohio. This game marks the halfway point through the baseball season and it gives fans By Patrick Sauers of the game time to evaluate whether their team has a chance of turning the season around and possibly grabbing that last wild The Most Patriotic Time card spot. The Tybee most of those flags tend to show up in the form of shorts, only reason it gets any publicity is because they moved it prior to beach towels and bikinis. It is a much more laid back atmosphere, but some defense is actually I have written several articles that have referenced me to being a being played, unlike in the Pro Bowl where you have a chance fan of soccer. On an international level I love watching it because to see a 300 pound line man return an 85-yard fumble, because there is no other event that pulls a nation together to show their everyone wants the chance to possibly see a hilarious end zone pride for the country. IF WALLS COULD TALK By Margie McLellan & Alaina Loughridge is today. Joel has been at Fort Pulaski for six years and has plans to grow and expand the stories told at the Fort. The Man knows his history and his Fort. Naturally, I also had to ask if he had seen any ghosties or had any ‘interesting stories’ to tell. No ghosties. I was disappointed by that, but one can’t hide that fascination to hope. Read on … Fort Pulaski is named in honor of Casimir Pulaski, a polish soldier who fought under the command of George Washington in the Revolutionary War. He was a noted cavalryman and a military commander who played a large role in training American troops. He is considered by many as The Father of American Cavalry. Pulaski sustained a mortal wound during the “The Siege of Savannah” and died a few days later in 1779 (What a fitting tribute to one of our Revolutionary War heroes to have a fort named after him). If you haven’t had the opportunity Fort Pulaski was built following the War of 1812 to protect the to visit Fort Pulaski, take my advice port of Savannah, which (as it still is today) was one of the most & do it. This was a huge turning point in the Civil War because up until this point in history, stone fortifications were the primary defense against invaders. I love the fact that the United States Army changed the face of warfare that had lasted for 1,000 years!! After the Civil War, Fort Pulaski was maintained by just a handful of people until it was declared a national monument in 1924 and was finally turned over to the National Park Service in 1933. A staff of around 17 people, from park rangers, cultural and natural resource technicians, and volunteers, maintain the fort and grounds today. If you are interested in volunteering your time, doing anything from working in the visitor center, doing interpretive programs, helping maintain the grounds, or even re-enacting, your services would be gladly appreciated. What better thing to do to help keep history alive! There are 1-2 daily guided tours daily as well as cannon firings every Saturday. Upcoming Events at Fort Pulaski: July 4 – Take a guided fort tour, play some baseball, or catch a cannon demonstration in celebration of Independence Day. Labor Day weekend (Sept. 5-6) – Confederate Living History Weekend. Volunteers will actually garrison the fort. Fort Pulaski will come to life and will resemble what it would have looked like in 1861. There will be weapons and artillery demonstrations as well as soldier’s life demonstrations. Let these living historians bring us back in time. TYBEE BEACHCOMBER | JULY 2015 11

THE Barracuda, Black Sea Bass, Triggerfish, Tarpon and Sharks are all fish that can be targeted on a daily basis. With the warmer Fish Captain Nick Shreves waters some days you can even luck out and find a stray Mahi or Wahoo coming to the nearshore areas. Everything will be following the bait fish. Watch for the schools of Greenies and you Whisperer can have a fishing bonanza. It won’t take you long to find out if the fish are near. For those not wanting to travel far the Tarpon, Spanish Mackerel and Sharks will be all over the beaches of the barrier islands. Fish the schools of Menhaden or Mullet. For the Tarpon I like to fish three live baits, one on top freelined, one on July Fishing Forecast the bottom and then one right in the middle. Tarpon can be real spooky and it’s always best to be quiet when getting close to a school of them. Once hooked these fish go ballistic. They will put on an airshow like no other fish out there. Tarpon will make an appearance as well. Live bait and artificial baits are both producing. Always smiling and genuinely interested in being your friend, therapist, counselor, drink master, and doesn’t consider his job ‘work,’ Rick is an excellent Amazing Fruit Salad bartender. However, that’s not how he planned it … Born and raised in Savannah on the Isle of Hope, Rick wanted to be a professional freshwater tournament fishing master. In his early 20’s, he went for it. After two years of fishing the professional circuit (what a great time that must have been!), Rick had a change of heart and married his childhood sweetheart, Joann (fellow co-hort in bartending crime at Benny’s). With college just not meant to be (ugh, I know that feeling), Rick went into the construction business and has been a superintendent for over 20 years. Now a family man with two kids, Matthew and Nicholas, how in hell did he end up as a bartender? Never considering himself as a ‘people person’ (uh oh), Rick was ‘railroaded’ into the job. Thrown into the family business mix of Benny’s, you sink or swim. Rick swam. Starting out doggie paddling, with the help of Ms. Rita Belle, his trainer (which is hilarious because 1 (29 oz.) can peach slices, undrained she trained me too), Rick was backstroking through the pool soon 1 (20 oz.) can pineapple chunks, undrained enough. 1 lb. strawberries, stemmed and quartered 1 banana, sliced So I had to ask Rick the 3: ½ pint blueberries Tybee life: Local since forever (like the Piggly Wiggly) 1 bunch grapes, seedless 1 (3 1/8 oz.) box dry instant vanilla pudding mix Passion: Fishing (silly question that) 1-2 Tbs. sugar (optional) When I grow up: Own a bar (careful what you ask for) In large bowl, combine peaches, pineapple and vanilla pudding Sounds like Rick has got the life!
