Our Visitors Today: Bamber Bridge Football in Bamber Bridge can be traced back as far as the late 1800s. However, the present club was established in the summer of 1974 when the old Bamber Bridge club amalgamated with neighbouring outfit Walton-Le-Dale. The new club played at the King George’s Playing Field and the early years were marked with a high degree of success on the local football scene. The first sixteen seasons was spent in the Preston & District League Premier Division and many honours were gained. The first season, 1974-75, proved a somewhat modest one with a 12th place finish in the league. However, an improved showing the following term saw the fledgling club finish 5th in the table and they won their first piece of silverware, when lifting the Lytham Medal competition. Modest though this first honour may have been, it was to be the first of many successes to come the clubs way throughout the years that followed. The Premier Division championship was won for the first time in the 1980-81 season and was the first of four title successes. This honour was also achieved in 1985-86, 1986-87 and for the last time in 1989-90. The club also finished as Premier Division runners-up three times in 1978-79, 1982-83 and 1984-85. During those sixteen seasons spent in the Preston & District League ‘Brig’ also enjoyed success in the League Cup competition, the Guildhall Cup. They emerged winners of the tournament on four occasions; firstly in 1978-79 and again in 1980-81, when they achieved the ‘league and cup double’ for the first time. They won the Guildhall Cup for the third time in 1984-85 and again in 1989-90, when winning the ‘league and cup double’ for the second time. The club were also Finalists in 1977-78, 1979-80 and 1987-88. Along the way, the club finished as finalists in the Premier Division Ward Shield in 1983-84. In those early years Bamber Bridge won the prestigious Lancashire FA Amateur Shield in 1981-82 and were finalists in 1980-81 and 1989-90. Throughout this period, the club committee had worked towards establishing a football ground of their own and in 1983 a piece of derelict land was purchased with the help of South Ribble District Council and the Sports Council. It took four years of dedicated work and considerable expense to change this overgrown land into a football pitch, which was named Irongate after the local area. It was indeed a proud moment to see the team play on the club’s own ground after having played on a park pitch for so long. The first game at Irongate was played in August 1987 and since then continual development and improvements have taken place at the ground to enable the club to enjoy a place within the National League System. Sustained success in the Preston & District League prompted the club to seek progression and at the beginning of the 1990-91 campaign the club joined the North West Counties League. In their first season, in what was in those days, the first rung of the National League System, ’Brig’ finished in a creditable 4th spot in the Second Division. Twelve months later and the club won its first honour in the semi-professional game when taking the North West Counties League Second Division championship and with it promotion to the top flight. The 1992-93 campaign proved to be a storming success with a runners-up spot in the First Division which was to see the club promoted for the second season running with a place in the First Division of the Northern Premier League. During that memorable season the club reached the Semi- Final of the FA Vase, only one step away from the famous Wembley Stadium. Then just to top

Our Visitors Today: Bamber Bridge things off, ‘Brig’ were finalists in the North West Counties League Floodlit Trophy. The club’s three year stay in the NWCL had been a rollercoaster ride. During this period floodlights were installed at the Irongate ground and further ground improvements were made to facilitate promotion to the Northern Premier League. In their first season in the NPL, the club finished in a creditable 13th place in the First Division and were finalists in the First Division Cup. In the following campaign, 1994-95, the club won promotion for the fourth time in its history, after finishing runners-up in the First Division. Also that term, Brig captured the Northern Premier League Challenge Cup when overcoming those famous cup fighters, Bishop Auckland, by 2-1 at Bolton Wanderers’ old ground, Burnden Park, before lifting the Lancashire FA Challenge Trophy, with a 2-1 victory over favourites Morecambe at Deepdale. Against all the odds in 1995-96, their first season in the Premier Division, the club won the Northern Premier League title beating off late challenges from Hyde United and Boston United, the final outcome depending on the results on the last day of the season - a history making season for the club. ‘Brig’ reached the Lancashire FA Challenge Trophy Final for the second time on the trot, but this time finished as runners-up, losing 0-1 against Morecambe; the Final once more being played at Deepdale. Bamber Bridge entertained the Czech Republic International team in a friendly game prior to the Czechs opening game against Germany in the European International Championship Finals in 1996. The successful Czech side had used Irongate for some of their preparations for the tournament in which they eventually finished as finalists. In 1999-00 the club enjoyed an excellent run in the FA Cup, reaching the Second Round Proper for the first time in their history before bowing out by a narrow 0-1 margin at Football League Second Division side Cambridge United, the result decided on a disputed penalty. The club made it to the Lancashire FA Challenge Trophy Final for the third time that season but once again finished as runners-up after going down heavily by 0-5 against Marine in the Final at Chorley’s Victory Park. After enjoying seven years in the Premier Division, the 2001-02 season proved a disaster with the club finishing bottom of the pile, and with a last minute reprieve via the play-offs failing to materialise, the club experienced relegation for the first time in its history. Restructuring of the National League System at the start of the 2004-05 season saw the club regain Premier Division status after two years in the lower section. Time spent back in the higher grade though lasted only twelve months and the club once again experienced the bitter pill of relegation at the end of the 2004-05 season, after finishing second from the bottom of the table. The season however, was not a complete disaster and despite the loss of Premier Division status, the Northern Premier League President’s Cup was lifted with a 3-2 aggregate win over Witton Albion. Further restructuring of the National League System in season 2007-08 saw the club placed in the First Division North of the Northern Premier League. ’Brig’ reached the play-offs in the first season of the new regionalised set-up; losing out by 2-3 to FC United of Manchester in
Our Visitors Today: Bamber Bridge the Semi-Final at Gigg Lane, Bury. ‘Brig’ once again reached the Lancashire FA Challenge Trophy Final for the fourth time in 2010-11 but lost out by 0-1 against AFC Fylde in the Final at Bolton Wanderers’ Reebok Stadium. Due to financial restrictions the season 2012-12 was one of consolidation in the 1st Division North and by Easter saw a change in manager , with Tony Greenwood leaving the club and Neil Crowe who had been Tony’s assistant stepping up to the manager’s job. Also appointed was Neil Reynolds who had re-joined the club at the start of 2009-2010 season and joined the coaching staff the following season and stepped up further as assistant manager to Neil Crowe. The season proved to be a very hard one both on and off the field, but a 13th place reflected on all the hard work that the management and players had put in. Season 2012-13 started off very slowly with consistency very hard to come by, then after the Christmas period , things began to improve with new signings, and two great runs especially the last one which saw us lose only 3 games out of the last 17, to finish the season just outside the play offs in 9th place. The following season turned out to be more successful, with ‘Brig’ narrowly missing out on promotion after suffering defeat at the hands of Ramsbottom United in extra time of the play- off Final. That match turned out to be the last game to be played at The Irongate Stadium; after local legend Sir Tom Finney passed away in February, the club obtained permission to rename the ground The Sir Tom Finney Stadium. It is a name that is world famous in football and all at the club feel very proud and humble that Sir Tom’s family agreed; his son Brian also became an honorary president of the club. After the worst possible start to the 2014-15 season, in which ‘Brig’ conceded 7 goals in the opening match of the season, the only way from there was up. With one or two changes in the playing staff , things got much better and the club became a force at both home and away. In the middle of October, the club signed arguably one of the best players to wear a B.B.F.C. Shirt in the vastly experienced ex Preston North End and Nottingham Forrest midfielder Paul McKenna. After a couple of games Paul settled in and results improved all the time .Despite a blip in form around Christmas the team finished in third place and after beating Northwich Victoria in the semi-final of the play offs ‘Brig’ lost the final for the second season in a row, this time to Darlington 1883. Season 2015-16 was an indifferent season in the league , but an F.A. Cup campaign that saw ‘Brig’ reach the 4th Qualifying round enabled some well needed revenue to enter the club’s coffers. After one of the worst Decembers on record for rain, Brig did well to finish the season at The Sir Tom Finney Stadium due to a collapsed drain and that hard-earned revenue from the F.A.Cup was soon spent on repairing the pitch. There was some consolation when ‘the Brig’ won the prestigious Fair Play Award for the three divisions of the Northern Premier League, which came with a cheque for £1000,

Confessions of a Newcomer How I became part of the Cable Nation by Gareth Coates As this is the final programme of the League season, I thought I would take up a little space for some personal reflections on the season and how I (accidentally) became involved with the club as your programme editor. I’ve been involved in football at this level for most of my life; I worked for the Middlesex FA for five and a half years before moving to Kirkby for family reasons at the end of 2015 and had produced all the Middlesex FA’s programmes and publications throughout my time there. I also ran their competitions for the last three years I was there. That’s not to say I didn’t know what it is like to volunteer for your local club; I remain a vice- president of my old club, Ashford Town (Middlesex), where I did all manner of jobs over a ten- year spell. My affection for the Tangerines, who like Cables, play at Step 4 - in Division One Central of the Southern League - remains undimmed. Mind you, finding a new job was my priority after relocating and although I watched a few matches at other clubs last season, groundhopping wasn’t giving me much enjoyment. Then, on the opening day of this season, I walked into Volair Park for the first time. As soon as you walk down Hope Street, you can sense the atmosphere and the history of the ground. Then you pass through the turnstile; the ground is magnificent, in its own way. Maybe it helped that the weather was good, or that we won; either way, Cables is my local senior club and I enjoyed my first visit and how friendly the welcome was. While I attended matches only sporadically, I kept a close eye on results and bought a share when the annual drive was run. And then, at the end of January, I found myself being asked to put together a single programme, as my predecessor, Paul Watkinson, had stepped down. I don’t blame him! Paul does a number of other jobs around the club and this particular role is a time-consuming one. But I knew that if I said ‘no’, the club could get fined, so I agreed to help out. As the saying goes, ‘the rest is history’.I’ve enjoyed the last few months tremendously, even if I’m a bit remote from the action sometimes. To my frustration, I don’t get to many games; it is difficult to juggle work, studying with the Open University and the demands of two small children alongside helping a football club. For example, because of an early deadline caused by Easter, I had to choose between watching the Lancaster match or compiling this programme; I saw the result come in on Twitter. Yet, I still feel part of it all and this club already feels as special to me as Ashford was and is. To get the crowds that we do and to generate such a phenomenal atmosphere at games is brilliant and I sense that this club - our club - is building something special. So, to finish, I’d like to say thank you. A special thank you to all those who have helped me with the programme, particularly our brilliant photographer David Fry. Thank you to the Board and all the volunteers who put in far more work than I do to keep the club on an even keel. Thank you to the players for giving your all every week. Thank you to the supporters who get behind the team each and every week.Thank you all for making me feel welcome and that I’m part of this great club. I hope that my efforts in recent weeks have provided some enjoyment and that I’ve been able to build on Paul’s work before mine. Have a great summer. See you next season!

The Northern Premier League’s League Cup will be contested between our visitors today, Bamber Bridge and Grantham Town on Wednesday 19th April. Grantham beat Clitheroe 2-1 with a brace from Lee Shaw to book their place in the final, while Brig needed penalties to see off Buxton as they were held to a 0-0 draw before Regan Linney scored the all important spot kick in a 4-2 victory. This isn’t the first time Harrison Park has hosted a big game this season as the ground was chosen to host England under 17’s game against Spain in February of this year with the visitors running out 5-1 winners. We would like to wish Bamber Bridge the very best of luck in the Final. SEADOGS ASSISTANT MANAGER HANGS UP HIS BOOTS Chris Bolder, player/assistant-manager at Evo-Stik Northern Premeir League First Division North club Scarborough Athletic, has decided to hang up his boots. Bolder, 34, collapsed during Saturday’s 2-0 win at Seel Park against Mossley AFC after suffering from breathing difficulties. He was then stretchered from the pitch and taken to a nearby hospital. Bolder has been suffering high blood pressure for seven years or so and is under treatment for it. But since coming out of hospital and reflecting on the situation over the weekend, he has decided to call time on his playing career with Boro and concentrate on his off-field assistance to manager Steve Kittrick. Bolder played in the Football League for Grimsby Town between 2001 and 2004 after coming through the youth ranks at Hull City. The midfielder has also appeared for Ossett Town and Guiseley AFC as well as notably spending seven seasons in two spells with North Ferriby United. He joined Scarborough prior to the 2013-14 season along with North Ferriby team-mates Paul Foot, Gary Bradshaw and Steve Ridley, firmly establishing himself in the centre of the Boro midfield. Bolder was cruelly sidelined in November 2014 with a cruciate knee injury against Bamber Bridge, but he still kept involved with the club as a coach. In December 2015, he stepped up alongside Matty Bloor to take temporary charge of the first-team and was key to the subsequent appointment of Kittrick as manager.

Non-League Newsround GROUND PROBLEMS MAY DENY DARLINGTON PLAY-OFF PLACE There are question marks about Darlington’s participation in the Vanarama National League North playoffs. The Quakers have released a statement after talk gathered pace that their stadium may not be fit for the step up. They moved back to Darlington in December, but there is debate about Blackwell Meadows’ certificate. Darlo are on track to finish in the playoffs, a point behind fourth placed Salford City and are level on points with Chorley and Stockport County. A club statement didn’t deny there are problems but they confirmed they are waiting on the decision of the league. “The Board of Darlington are aware of rumours concerning whether Blackwell Meadows meets the grading requirements to allow the club to complete in the National League playoffs,” it read. “Discussions are continuing with the National League and fans will be informed as soon as a decision is taken by the League. “The club will make no further comment until then on any of its media outlets” NPL STARS HONOURED AT AWARDS CEREMONY Last Sunday night saw the annual Evo-Stik Northern Premier League Awards Evening held in Barnsley at the plush Brooklands Holiday Inn. It was a season where no player picked up more than one individual award, with the gongs being handed out by the guest of honour, the former Wrexham and Wolves manager Dean Saunders. The Premier Division Player Of The Year award went to Blyth Spartans’ Daniel Maguire. He capped off a memorable weekend by picking up the award just 24 hours after helping the North East side win promotion out of the Northern Premier League, his 26 goals being critical for the club’s promotion. He was also to come third place in the supporters player of the year award. While Marcus Dinanga of Matlock Town took the Young player Of The Year award for the Premier Division. The forward has impressed many people during his loan spell at the Derbyshire club from Championship side Burton Albion. Each division has a team of the season and the Premier Division’s team read: Shane Bland (Whitby Town), Andy White (Nantwich Town), Jack Duggan (Stourbridge), Dan Scarr (Stourbridge), Kallum Griffiths (Spennymoor Town), Robbie Dale (Blyth Spartans), Dale Hopson (Whitby Town), Sean Cooke (Nantwich Town), Marcus Dinanga (Matlock Town), Luke Benbow (Stourbridge) and Daniel Maguire (Blyth Spartans) James Walshaw has been key to Farsley Celtic’s quest for promotion and it was no surprise that he took the Payer Of The Year award for the First Division North. The leading scorer for the division has bagged 31 goals this season as the Villagers lead the table a point ahead of Lancaster City.

Non-League Newsround Meanwhile, Elliott Rokka of Radcliffe Borough picked up the Young Player Of The Year award for the division The young forward has scored nine goals in 16 games for the Boro this season. It was a great night for Rokka as he bagged the runners-up spot in the vote for supporters player of the year award. The team of the season was dominated by Farsley Celtic players, as four players made up the team of the year, Graeme Kibbin, Aaron Hardy, Lewis Nightingale and James Walshaw. In full the team was Graeme Kibbin (Farsley Celtic), Adam Sumner (Lancaster City), Tyrone Gray (Ossett Town), Chris Anderson (Tadcaster Albion), Aaron Hardy (Farsley Celtic), Lewis Nightingale (Farsley Celtic), Sam Bailey (Kendal Town), Jonathan Greening (Tadcaster Albion), Jordan Connerton (Lancaster City), James Walshaw (Farsley Celtic) and Aaron Burns (Trafford FC). When you have Gavin Allott in your side you always know that you are going to get goals and this season has been no different for the former Frickley Athletic man as he has bagged 24 goals so far this season for Shaw Lane as they look for promotion to the Premier Division, he was rewarded for his goals by scooping the Player Of The Year award for the First Division South. Witton Albion’s Bradley Bauress picked up the Young Player Of The Year award. The Cheshire club is in the hunt for promotion this season thanks in part to his 18 league goals that he has netted for the side. Michael Duggan (Spalding United), Matty Devine (Witton Albion), Nathan Stanfield (Spalding United), Liam Dolman (AFC Rushden and Diamonds), Anthony Gardener (Witton Albion), Ryan Qualter (Shaw Lane AFC), Bradley Bauress (Witton Albion), Kelvin Lugsden (Shaw Lane), Gavin Allott (Shaw Lane), Anthony Malbon (Kidsgrove Athletic) and Bradley Wells (Spalding United) made up the team of the year for the NPL First Division South. The Northern Premier League runs its own successful academy league and the Player Of The Year winner was by midfielder Lewis Belgrave of Mickleover Sports. The team for the academy, which boasted four players from the Derbyshire club of Mickleover Sports was made up of Jordan Pierpoint (Matlock Town), Manzoor Amiri (Mickleover Sports), Joe Ruane (Warrington Town), Scott Taylor (Belper Town), Morgan Williams (Mickleover Sports), Lewis Belgrave (Mickleover Sports), Adam Leach (Radcliffe Borough), Stephen Stretton (Radcliffe Borough), Jordan Lee (Matlock Town), Jake Dickinson (Mickleover Sports) and Euan Woods (Warrington Town) Each season the supporters get to chose their own winners through the Northern Premier League Facebook group; this year Dale Hopson of Whitby Town took the prize ahead of Rokka and Maguire. Hopson has been key for Blues in their promotion push. The other award that was handed out on Sunday night was the lifetime achievement award, which went to Clitheroe FC chairwomen, Ann Barker.
