RACE PLANNING As we move in to the competition phase and preparation towards the SNAG Championships, Coach Michael describes some of the elements necessary to prepare for race day. TRAINING AND TAPER Competition performance or racing is the end result of everything we prepare and train for. Coaches at CSC set annual and then shorter training cycle blocks (typically around 12 weeks, like a school term). During this sort of cycle, swimmers will build up volume (distance) and improve fitness. They will then do a lot of high-quality work specifically targeting race performance. There will then be a short decrease in volume of training (Taper) and then they compete. Usually there is a short recovery (light) week and the cycle repeats itself. This sequence is a standard approach to competitive swimming • Equipment list – prepare your bag the night before and include and understood and practiced throughout the world.
