Flying New Zealand National Championships 2021 West Melton Airfield 15 - 21 February PRESENTED BY 1 HOSTED BY THE CANTERBURY AERO CLUB INC
Welcome from the President of the Canterbury Aero Club Please enjoy yourself during your visit to our West Melton airfield. The Canterbury Aero Club is delighted to be hosting you and is keen to ensure your visit is satisfactory in every respect. There has been an immense effort by a great team of volunteers which I am sure is going to result in a well-run competition en- hanced by traditional Canterbury hospitality. We have organised a social programme which will provide plenty of opportunity to renew old friendships and to meet and make new ones. We especially welcome the Young Eagles who might be experienc- ing their very first National event of this scale and I hope everyone can go out of their way to involve them and make them feel wel- come. West Melton has its quirks with unusual circuit heights and pat- terns and February is Nor-West season. Much work has gone into preparation of the airfield and the sur- rounding competition areas. Every effort has been made to ensure that the events run as well as possible. The competition is going to be strong and challenging but I am sure that this will serve to bring out the best in you. Best of luck to all competitors. Canterbury has much to offer the visitor. The Central City is emerging from the chaos of the earthquakes and there is much to explore that is new. If you can find the time, excursions, whether by air or road, to places such as Hanmer Springs, the Ashburton Aviation Museum and around Banks Peninsula are very worthwhile. Please let me know if you have any concerns at all. And above all be safe and have fun. Now, “Let the competition begin.” Geoff Brodie - President 3
A Welcome From Flying NZ A friendly welcome to all attendees of the Flying New Zealand national champion- ships presented by Avionics Canterbury Wide. Canterbury Aero Club is hosting our annual event based at West Melton Airfield, with some competition activity being held at close-by aerodromes. Canterbury have spent the whole year preparing West Melton aerodrome, organising the social events, and negotiating with the organisations affected by our use of airspace. An immense thank you to the Canterbury team for all your efforts for all our benefit. As past hosts, many clubs will be aware of the costs involved in organising an event of this size. Canterbury has had the forethought to engage a sponsor to offset some of these costs. Thank you to Avionics Canterbury Wide for answering the call and assisting the host club. Most pilots will have at some stage flown in the Canterbury plains and realise the close proximity of Christchurch International airport to West Melton. Airspace in this area is very busy and difficult for Flying NZ to use within the parameters of the airspace. Airways have made concessions to allow as much of our activity as possi- ble to occur in the skies over West Melton. The Canterbury team have constructed a robust procedure to make sure that all activity occurs without incursions into Christchurch airspace. Please take the time to read the full operational booklet prior to commencing arrival flights to West Mel- ton for guidance on procedures that will be required. The last thing any of us need is breaches into airspace risking the concessions provided to allow us to operate our competitions at West Melton. Enjoy your time away for our annual national championships. Remember your sportsmanship and remember to have fun. The competition will be robust being the nationals, congratulations on the milestone of achieving selection from your indi- vidual area rallies. I look forward to meeting with you all once more. Tony Page President RNZAC (Flying NZ) 4

WEST MELTON AIRFIELD = NZWL West Melton airfield was established in 1971 as an alternative ab-inito training area field, just four minutes flying time from Christchurch Airport. Having its main runways (04/22) and (17/35) well orientated for the prevailing winds, it has proved to be a The original “chalet” at West Melton Airfield valuable asset. In 1990 the extension of run- way 29/11 was completed and in July 1991 a six aircraft hangar was commenced, marking West Melton’s 20th anniversary. The new hangar was officially opened for use in May 1992, with the new Clubhouse completed in 1994. Most of the improvements, except buildings, have been carried out by volunteer club members, led by a very ac- tive West Melton Branch committee. The enormous amount of time spent by some members of this group has made it the premier air- field it is today. 18
