About Kaiapoi

Kaiapoi is a picturesque river town with a deep history, built on the banks of the Kaiapoi River, close to
the mouth of the Waimakariri River. The town offers a number of outdoor activities as well as an array
of shops, services, natural attractions and events.

Kaiapoi is easily accessed from the Northern Motorway, State Highway One, just 15 minutes’ north of
Christchurch. It is the gateway to the Waimakariri and North Canterbury areas, where you can find
thriving rural towns, vineyards, sandy beaches, rivers and a host of recreational activities, farmers
markets and festivals, distinctive and special to this country lifestyle district.

The town is undergoing significant redevelopment following the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes. Kaiapoi has
a population of 13,650 and is expected to grow to 15,340 by 2028. Whilst it is a rapidly growing town it
has maintained the heart and feel of a village. The Kaiapoi Town Centre Plan 2028 and Beyond has been
adopted after significant community input into its development. This provides a framework to redevelop
the Kaiapoi town centre and create an exciting location for community and business. Its renewed vision
for its future is “New Zealand’s Best Rivertown’ - Live. Shop. Dine. Relax.
