The Role Principal • Leading a positive learning environment for all tamariki • Christchurch Region On behalf of their community and whānau, Te Kura Tuatahi ō Kaiapoi - Kaiapoi Borough School’s Board of Trustees is seeking a new leader for their whānau, school and community. The community has shared what kind of leader their school, north of Christchurch, needs to take them into the future. With a commitment to and understanding of te Tiriti o Waitangi, we are seeking a bi-culturally confident and competent leader who is committed to staff and student well-being and positive behaviour practices. About the School Te Kura Tuatahi ō Kaiapoi - Kaiapoi Borough School originally opened on another site in Hilton Street in 1873, closer to Williams Street. The school was shifted to its present site in the 1930’s. Modern building and environmental developments started in 1989 and have continued since then. In 2016 work commenced on a $4millon upgrade of the existing site. It has a unique environment with great grounds close to the river and a wide range of established trees. The school is a full primary school for pupils from Year 1 to Year 8, providing a wide range of teaching and learning activities and opportunities. It also has a variety of sport options including; swimming, athletics, cross country, netball, rugby, soccer and hockey. Music opportunities include choir, school band, musical productions and instrument tuition. All year 1-4 pupils participate in Kapa Haka. From Year 5-8 taking part in Kapa Haka is optional. Katote Kāhui Ako “Ma te kaha, te mahitahi me te mana hei whaangai te ara o te matauranga.” Strengthen, collaborate and empower to foster the pathway of learning. The Katote Kāhui Ako is made up of 9 schools located in North Canterbury with approximately 3,000 learners. There is one secondary school and eight primary schools. The schools in the Katote Kāhui Ako are a mixture of smaller and larger schools, several in rural and semirural locations, an integrated school and a school that offers bilingual provision. About Kaiapoi Kaiapoi is a picturesque river town with a deep history, built on the banks of the Kaiapoi River, close to the mouth of the Waimakariri River. The town offers a number of outdoor activities as well as an array of shops, services, natural attractions and events. Kaiapoi is easily accessed from the Northern Motorway, State Highway One, just 15 minutes’ north of Christchurch. It is the gateway to the Waimakariri and North Canterbury areas, where you can find thriving rural towns, vineyards, sandy beaches, rivers and a host of recreational activities, farmers markets and festivals, distinctive and special to this country lifestyle district. The town is undergoing significant redevelopment following the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes. Kaiapoi has a population of 13,650 and is expected to grow to 15,340 by 2028. Whilst it is a rapidly growing town it has maintained the heart and feel of a village. The Kaiapoi Town Centre Plan 2028 and Beyond has been adopted after significant community input into its development. LIMITS OF AUTHORITY: The Principal must work within legal requirements: • Primary Principals’ Collective Agreement • Registered Teacher Criteria • Code of ethics for Registered Teachers • Education Act 1989 • Kaiapoi Borough School Charter, Strategic Plan and Annual Plan • Kaiapoi Borough School Policies RESPONSIBILITIES: The Principal is the school’s Chief Executive and is accountable to the Board of Trustees. They are responsible for: • the successful day to day management and professional leadership of the school • administration of the school • all professional decisions • classroom programmes • curriculum issues • teacher activity • tamariki progress The Principal will work closely with the board on all staffing matters. The Principal’s performance will be measured against the ‘Professional Standards for Primary Principals’ as stated in the current Primary Principal’s Collective Contract, the New Zealand Teacher Registration Criteria, School Charter and agreed specific goals. KEY FUNCTIONS: The Principal will: • Assist the Board with the development of the strategic and annual operational plans. • Advise the Board on policy development, budget planning, resource organisation, administration and all staffing matters, including staff appraisal. • Implement policies and decisions of the Board. • Lead the provision of teaching and learning that ensures all tamariki are engaged and progressing. • Manage the day-to-day running of the school by: ➢ implementing, monitoring, and reporting progress on the educational and operational plans. ➢ Ensuring that tamariki educational needs are met and that parents are consulted when necessary and provided with timely reporting of children’s progress and achievement. ➢ Developing, promoting, and monitoring a culture which values and positively encourages learning, competence, achievement, discipline, and high standards of conduct and integrity. ➢ Developing and maintaining effective relationships with the Board, staff, tamariki, parents and the community. ➢ Delegating duties and responsibilities to staff and ensuring good communication is maintained within the school, providing leadership to teachers and support staff. ➢ Co-ordinating the school’s day-to-day operations. ➢ Providing and maintaining the school’s buildings, equipment, and educational facilities. ➢ Controlling, monitoring, and reporting on the school’s finances. ➢ Overall responsibility for all classroom teaching including planning, evaluation, counselling and record keeping. ➢ Keeping up to date with curriculum issues and educational theory. ➢ Developing staff through guidance, selection of courses, appraisal and support. ➢ Visiting classrooms, checking school grounds, playground duty to monitor school tone. ➢ Community liason through newsletters and attendance at school-related meetings. ➢ Be responsible for implementing and monitoring policy on staffing and staff performance, appraisal and development. ➢ Provide a safe place for tamariki and staff to work in, ensuring the safety and wellbeing of tamariki at all times. ➢ Manage health, safety and wellbeing and inform the Board of Trustees of any risks – a ‘no surprises’ approach. ➢ Be responsible for building and maintain community connections . • Work on other projects from time to time, in consultation with the Board, as required eg. Property development. • To provide the Board with reports and feedback on the achievement of educational, financial, and administrative objectives. KEY RESULTS EXPECTED • An educational programme in accordance with the requirements of the school charter. • Administration that achieves good physical and teaching resources. • A positive working relationship with the Board, parents and tamariki that reflect the core mission and values of the kura. • Close association with local early childhood centres and secondary schools. • Close community liaison. • Positive relations fostered with organisations such as NZEI and the School Trustees Association. GENERAL The Principal will be required to achieve the above key functions by meeting objectives and professional standards outlined in an annual performance agreement ratified by the Board after consultation with the Principal. It is expected that the achievement of the key functions by the Principal will result in the Principal managing and leading in a positive and exciting environment for tamariki which will result in a high standard of quality education. FUNCTIONAL RELATIONSHIPS: Tamariki: Foster a sense of belonging among tamariki by providing advice, guidance, support and relationship management. Parents/Caregivers: Address any concerns or queries promptly, ensuring parents are informed, provide guidance and support as needed and ensure regular student reports are distributed. Staff: Supervision of all staff, professional leadership of teaching and support staff. Board of Trustees: Personal contact with chairperson between board meetings; two meetings per term with the whole Board or as required to efficiently administer the school. Community: Ongoing contact with the wider community through attendance at community functions. Contribute school news to community newletters and local newspapers. Respond to invitations from community groups e.g.marae. Education and Health Agencies: The Principal will liaise, when necessary, with educational and health agencies. Adjacent schools: Maintain close links through sporting and cultural programmes and shared professional development opportunities. Work closely with local early childhood facilities, Kaiapoi North School, St Patricks School of Kaiapoi, and Kaiapoi High School with a focus on sharing collaborative resources to meet the needs of the Kaiapoi community education cluster group. Kātote Kāhui Ako (Community of Learning): Maintain close links with the nine cluster schools and participate actively with Kātote Kāhui Ako to achieve the vision - “Our vision is to strengthen our relationships and practices, to collaborate meaningfully with our children at the center and to empower and engage all learners”. Service staff: Deal personally with education service centre, tradespeople and sales representatives, referring to chairperson or sub-committee conveners as necessary. Other principals: Meet with colleagues regularly through the local principals’ association. Community agencies: Maintain contact on an ‘as needs’ basis with local police, Child Youth and Family, Maori Wardens, and other relevant community agencies. Our Process Search and Advertising During this period a Sheffield consultant may contact you to discuss your application, explore your motivation for applying and assess your suitability and fit with the key competencies of the role.
