Five Star Dentist Award Program Summary and Research Methodology Program Summary Five Star Professional conducts market‐specific research throughout the U.S. and Canada to identify service professionals who provide quality services to their patients. Five Star Professional’s programs are some of the largest and most widely published service professional award programs in North America, covering more than 40 major markets. Each Five Star Professional award winner list for each market is published in the market’s leading city and regional magazine and/or business publication and on fivestarprofessional.com. Five Star award winners do not pay a fee to be included in the research or the final list of award winners. Research Objective Our research objective is to develop a list of dentists in a given market who satisfy objective eligibility and evaluation criteria that are associated with providing quality services to patients. For the purposes of this program, dentists are defined as those individuals providing services in the following specialties: Endodontics, General Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial, Orthodontics, Pediatric Dentistry, Periodontics, Prosthodontics and Cosmetic Dentistry. The list is not intended to be exhaustive. To receive the Five Star Dentist award, a dentist must satisfy nine objective eligibility and evaluation criteria that are associated with dentists who provide quality services to their patients. The list of Five Star Dentists is not a ranking, but rather a roster of dentists who satisfy objective selection criteria associated with those who provide quality services to their patients. The award process is conducted annually in each market. Research Methodology The following steps define the process used to ensure that the research objective is met: A. Award Candidate Identification Process The nomination process is designed to identify the broadest possible population of high‐quality award candidates. Award candidates are identified by one of two sources: peer nomination or patient nomination. Self‐nominations are not accepted. Page 1 —PROPRIETARY—
1. Define Research Geography and Relevant Population of Dentists The partnering magazine publication defines the geographical area in which the magazine is distributed. This is typically a list of counties, but may also include a list of Zip codes. 2. Acquire Peer Nomination Lists Within the defined geography, the dentist population data will be acquired via a third‐ party data provider. Five Star Professional verifies the population data through a multiple step process that includes USPS address verification and referencing publically available data sources. 3. Solicit Peer Nominations Five Star Professional administers a peer survey via U.S. Mail to each dentist identified within the defined geography. Each respondent is provided an individualized survey instrument listing a sub‐set of dentists located in the research geography. The survey asks respondents whom they feel is worthy of nomination by indicating whom they would refer patients, friends or family should the dentist be unable to provide services. Dentists in the General Dentistry specialty will be asked to indicate which dentists in all specialties listed in the survey that they would refer to patients, friends or family. Dentists in specialties outside of General Dentistry will be asked which General Dentistry practitioners listed on their survey that they would refer to patients, friends and family. Respondents will also be provided the opportunity to identify other dentists by name whom may not appear on the survey or whom they feel are not deserving of inclusion on the final list. Individualized surveys will not contain the name of the reviewing dentist, thus limiting the opportunity for self‐nomination or recommendation. Checks and balances are in place to avoid conflicts of interest; specifically, peer reviewers remain anonymous, only receive a portion of the nominee list and, in most cases, cannot remove a dentist for consideration by themselves. 4. Solicit Patient Nominations Five Star Professional administers a survey by U.S. Mail and/or by e‐mail to a representative number of participating magazine subscribers. Each respondent is asked: To name only dentists from whom they have received dental services. If their dental experience has been consistent with American Dental Association® suggestions for choosing a dentist and if they would recommend this dentist to a friend. If they feel the dental fees are reasonable for the services provided. Page 2 —PROPRIETARY—
Five Star Professional may also request additional consumer research information from each respondent that will not have bearing on award candidacy. In most cases, a “No” response by any one patient to any one or multiple questions cannot remove a dentist from consideration. 5. Collect Peer Nominations and Verify Validity Five Star Professional collects peer recommendation surveys submitted by U.S. Mail and via online response. Five Star Professional’s research staff reviews the responses for completeness of required information and to guard against self‐nomination. In the event of questions, Five Star Professional contacts the peer that submitted the recommendations. 6. Collect Patient Nominations and Verify Validity Five Star Professional collects recommendations submitted by U.S. Mail and via online response. Five Star Professional’s research staff reviews evaluations for completeness of required information and to guard against self‐nomination. 7. Verify Award Candidate License and Contact Information Each award candidate is matched to a regional or national license number. Once found on the applicable license/registration site, each dentist’s license status (active or non‐ active) and disciplinary history are noted. In order to be named a Five Star Dentist, an individual must have an active license with the applicable regulatory authority and have a favorable regulatory and complaint history. B. Selection Process 1. Collect Award Candidate Data Five Star Professional provides each award candidate with instructions for submitting information about themselves and their practice, including specific data related to eligibility and selection criteria. They are required to certify the information they provide is accurate. Award candidates who satisfy the following nine objective eligibility and evaluation criteria associated with providing outstanding services to their patients receive the Five Star Dentist award. Evaluation Criteria ‐ Required 1. Qualifying peer and/or patient nomination Eligibility Criteria ‐ Required 2. Active license with applicable regulatory authority 3. Actively practicing as a dentist for a minimum of five years Page 3 —PROPRIETARY—
4. Favorable regulatory and disciplinary history review 5. Currently accepting new patients Evaluation Criteria – Considered 6. Twelve‐month number of active patients 7. One‐year patient retention rate 8. Three‐year patient retention rate 9. Education and professional achievements, including: Post‐degree and advanced training Fellowships Academic achievements/positions Board certifications Leadership positions Publications, lectures & presentations Professional designations Professional activities Honors and awards Other outstanding achievement It is recognized that the data for a dentist’s three‐year patient retention rate may not be available. Therefore, submission of this data is optional and is only considered if provided. The twelve‐month and three‐year retention rates are uniquely weighted based on market‐specific submitted data to minimize the impact of non‐submission. 2. Evaluate Award Candidates Once the data forms are collected, award candidates are evaluated based on the nine eligibility and evaluation criteria. 3. Award Winner Notification Five Star Dentist award winners are notified of their inclusion on the final list of award winners. Those candidates who do not qualify are also notified accordingly. Award List Publication The contracting magazine publishes an article, prepared by Five Star Professional, which describes the evaluation process and determination of award winners, and presents the resulting list of Five Star Dentists. Five Star Dentists are also listed on fivestarprofessional.com for the duration of their award year. Dentists do not pay a fee to be included in the research process or to be named a Five Star Dentist. In connection with the publication of the article, dentists may elect to pay a fee to further promote their status as a Five Star Dentist or to include a photo and Page 4 —PROPRIETARY—
profile information in the “profiles” section that accompanies the magazine section article. For additional fees, Five Star Professional will provide the dentist with other tools to further publicize being named a Five Star Dentist. A dentist’s purchase of a profile or other services does not influence Five Star Professional’s determination of whether to include or exclude a particular dentist from any list of Five Star Dentists.
