FIRST CHANCE CAMPAIGN concordanceacademy.org/firstchance Nationally, 77% of individuals who return to their communities after being released from prison are rearrested within five years. We’ve reduced the rate of reincarceration in St. Louis by more than 40%. Help us make this change across the U.S.
FIRST CHANCE CAMPAIGN OUR MISSION Approximately 100 million people in this country are affected by incarceration, making it one of the most significant societal issues we face today. Most incarcerated individuals have experienced horrific trauma at a young age, which is the result of being born in neighborhoods that have been devastated by inequity and often lack social capital and positive support systems. With the imprisonment rate of Black males The mission of Concordance Academy is to dramatically reduce reincarceration at nearly six times that of white males, this is a problem disproportionately impacting rates by precisely executing our holistic, evidence-driven re-entry program. the Black community. Since our founding in 2015, we have reduced the reincarceration rate in the St. Louis region by more than 40%. It is vital that we come together to help members of our community who have been affected by this trauma for generations. The First Chance Campaign — a $50 million fundraising effort chaired by World Wide Technology Founder and Chairman David But we’re just getting started. Steward — will enable Concordance Academy to expand our services to 11 additional U.S. cities by 2025 and double the number of participants we serve in the St. Louis Join us in creating lasting change at concordanceacademy.org/firstchance. region. Concordance is working to break the cycle of reincarceration and forge a path toward equality by supporting people who have been released from prison and are re-entering society. As we change the reality of our participants’ lives, there is a ripple effect throughout their communities. Families are restored, food security is achieved, jobs are secured, stable housing is obtained, and communities are healed. Only then is there an opportunity to establish the basic principles of social justice. Given the transformations we experience daily as we partner with participants on their journey, we are reminded, time and again, that our participants never needed a second chance. They needed their first. concordanceacademy.org/firstchance
THE PROBLEM Many factors lead to high rates of reincarceration: • Horrific trauma at a very young age • Severe mental health disorders • Significant substance use disorders • Average education level of ninth grade • Little or no work skills or experience • Few positive family members or other support systems • The perpetual stigma of being a felon for life Plus • This is not a cause many individual donors wish to donate to And • With limited resources, re-entry service providers typically only focus on addressing one or two areas of need Our holistic, evidence-driven approach addresses them all — and more.
