INTRODUCTION • Greetings & Welcome to FTRA’s Orientation Programme, 2021. • This programme is aimed at orientating & addressing first year students in the teaching programme. • The orientation programme will enable new students to become well- versed with the teaching standards.
OBJECTIVES Introduce student-teachers to • Teaching Profession • FTRA & its functions • Modern skills needed to teach in Fiji • Professional Standards for Teachers in Fiji • Importance of Formal Teacher Training Qualifications (mandatory requirement)
FTRA- A TEACHER PROFESSIONAL FTRA BOARD BODY • Statutory Body • 9 Board-members • Regulates entry into teaching • Guided by FTR Act 2008 & FTRA Regulations
FTRA- A TEACHER PROFESSIONAL BODY FTR ACT 2008 10.- (1) No person shall be permitted to teach at a school in Fiji unless the person is a holder of FTRA certificate of registration permitting the person to teach or practice teaching at a school in Fiji
REGISTERING FOR PRACTICUMS • All teacher trainees going on practicums in schools in Fiji need to register • This will be institutional registration and FTRA fees will be paid by the TTI • All trainees will have to submit police clearance before registration is granted. • The registration list will be sent to the institution and not the individual trainees • Before taking a paid teaching position, teachers will need to register on provisional registration individually.
PURPOSE OF PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS 1. Providing inspiration to aspiring teachers, clarifying the expectations of the profession; 2. Offering guidance to members of the profession seeking to improve their professional practice through self-reflection, professional learning & other methods of personal development; 3. Increasing public recognition of the quality of the profession, understanding & appreciating the complexity of the work for teachers.

1.CONTENT (MASTERY OF WHAT TO TEACH & SPECIFIC TEACHING TOOLS) Common Content Knowledge • Demonstrates thorough and content knowledge. • This refers to knowledge & skills in the subject that the teacher would be teaching. For instance, the teacher has very high grades in Chemistry or Biology. This knowledge is common for academics & related fields.
2.PEDAGOGY(EXPERTS ON HOW TO TEACH) • Is able to describe cognitive, social & developmental theories of learning & how they apply to students in the classroom. • Articulates the processes & practices or methods of teaching & learning. • Is able to describe how students construct knowledge & acquire skills & how they develop habits of mind & positive dispositions toward learning • Is able to realise the overall educational purposes, values & aims.

9.NETWORKING & STAKEHOLDER RELATIONSHIPS • Builds professional networks with other teachers to share resources & ideas. • Creates Personal Learning Networks (PLN) • Actively participates in outreach programmes of the school • Provides effective & constructive feedback to parents regarding student’s learning. • Develops good collaboration with parents in trying to maximize learning for students.

It is no longer the case. By the time you graduate there may be interviews, more tests and GPA restrictions. • Aim to have good GPA • Aim to learn & not only pass exams • Learn to use technology in teaching • Prepare to teach students with special needs
• Develop counselling skills • Learn to administer basic first aid • Learn modern Behaviour Management techniques • Keep well informed on MEHA policies (website) • Lectures will not prepare you for everything. Be autonomous learners! • Keep up with global trends in education & teaching
