Sunday, March 21, 2021 Page 3 A Message from fr. Jason Grisafi Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, In order to ensure that this update is received by as many parishioners as possible, I am reproducing my announcement from Tuesday in the bulletin this week. However, I've added on two points to the end. We have some important news that we would like to share with you before the opening of Mass registrations this week. Back in May we spoke about the forward movement of the parish taking place in phases. A specific announcement dated May 23rd, 2020 outlined five phases. That was soon upset by different announcements regarding capacity limits that moved things forward much more quickly than originally anticipated (one may recall that at that time the governor had said in a press conference that houses of worship would not be allowed to open until 2021. By the end of the same week the decision was reversed and we became one of the first groups given permission to open). Although we were not able to follow the specifics of the plan, we have been working with a spirit of moving forward in steps. I am happy to share with you that we are currently in the midst of moving to the next step. Starting this weekend, motivated by professional recommendations and other factors, the church will begin to seat in every other row instead of every third row. You will notice the change on this week's registration system. In addition, after Easter we will begin to take steps to phase out Mass registrations, starting with Masses in Msgr. Nolan Hall. From there, we will evaluate when and how we may take further steps. I understand that some may still consider this a challenge, but please note that the reservation system actually permits us to fit more people into the church and avoids a situation where people would need to be turned away. Finally, the staff is beginning our own internal process of looking at our various departments and planning the next steps forward there, as well. There is (much) more in the works, but I wanted to provide this information to you as soon as possible. I would like to also make a personal appeal to parishioners to join us on Tuesday nights, starting at 7:00pm, for our viewing and discussion of the TV series "Chosen." We began this Tuesday and I believe that I can speak for all who were in attendance and say that the first episode was a riveting experience, powerfully portraying the imagined daily life of the Apostles before their calling, and the healing of Mary Magdalene. The conversation afterward, for which we broke into groups of four people, lasted for an hour as the episode guided us into a deep discussion about Scripture and faith. I truly believe that every parishioner would benefit tremendously from this experience, and so I would like to highlight it in this space. Also, as I did last year, I will be taking the option to have the religious statuary and the crucifix covered in purple cloths during "Passiontide" which starts this Sunday. For those who did not pay a visit to the church during those two weeks, it can initially be quite a jarring experience to see these things covered. That is the point! We see briefly, but profoundly, life without Christ - and come to appreciate more deeply all that we have because of Him. We see that life without Christ doesn't even make sense, as He is life! May God continue to grant you all a peaceful and blessed Lent. Remember that we enter Holy Week next week. Sincerely, fr. Jason

Sunday, March 21, 2021 Page 9 Deacon’s Column The Paradox of the Cross Our Gospel reading today confronts us with the paradox of the cross. Such is the nature of our text. Jesus is speaking of His cross and in so doing presents us with some amazing paradoxes. He talks about life through death, and about gaining by losing. He depicts the road to glory as the path of humiliation. Few events in history are so packed with paradox as is the crucifixion of Christ. One of the simplest of them is this; the cross is an ancient historical spectacle, and yet it is an ultimate, personal matter that involved each of us. The impact of that idea has been incalculable. When Christ dies for someone there must be something in him that is worth dying for. Let that idea once get hold of a person, and something happens to them. Their whole life is affected. They begin to see themselves in a different light; just maybe, he really is worth something after all. And with that possibility in view, they begin to live with a growing degree of dignity and self respect. The cross, where humanity is at its worst, has enabled humanity to believe in its best. The cross was a crushing defeat of righteousness, and yet it was the greatest victory that righteousness ever won. Jesus said, “Expect a grain of wheat fall onto the ground and die it abides alone, but if it dies it brings forth much fruit”. In church and throughout Christendom a mystery is present: Nearly two thousand years after the event, we meet week after week to celebrate a colossal failure. Next week is Palm Sunday. On that day Jesus rode into Jerusalem amid the hosannas of the crowd, but by Friday they were crying, “Crucify Him”. He had failed. In the sacred city of His faith, He appealed for a reform of religion, but they rejected Him. He had failed. He trusted His disciples to be the nucleus of the coming Kingdom of God, but one betrayed Him, another denied Him, the rest fled. He had failed. He opposed violent revolt but was accused of trying to make Himself a king against Caesar, and Rome crucified Him. It was a complete and colossal failure. That Friday night Pilate and the leaders of the Jewish nation and all the people, and the disciples too, thought that Jesus was finished forever. This is the paradox of the failure of the cross. There is something in this world deeper and stronger than the things that succeed, the things that fail, the things that are everlastingly right. So we witness that failure hanging on the cross, and we know that His pierced hands still hold the future in their grasp. Carry Your Cross with Pride Deacon Mike

Attendance envelopes can be found in the back of the Church and Hall. You will need to register to attend Mass in person. Fifth Sunday of Lent Page 16 BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT GROUP FOR WIDOWS AND WIDOWERS 8 Week Program for Age 50 and Over Starting Wednesday, March 24, 2021 3:00 – 5:00 pm St. Joseph Parish Center 39 N. Carll Ave., Babylon, NY 11702 For more information and registration, please call: Terry Hoffmann 631-669-0198 or Geri Olson 631-661-8994 Reflections FORGIVING AND (N0T) FORGETTING Though it is more often heard during Advent, repenting is also an activity to consider during Lent. Clearly, while doing so for our sinful ways is of primary concern, there are other aspects of repentance which to ponder. One of them is a firm purpose of amendment, which is the honest intention to make a serious, sustained effort not to sin again. And that intention must include determination to begin the effort here and now, not to delay until some point in the future when it may be easier, nor to proceed a little at a time no more, rather we will do our best to sin no more. This assures us God’s forgiveness. God, in His infinite mercy, awaits us to seek His forgiveness so the abundance of Grace which He has for us can be released. Likewise, there is the concept of our own forgiveness where we absolve someone who injured us and, at other times, pardoning ourselves as well. Like taking the step to enter the confessional, approaching someone whom we have wronged takes reflection, prayer, and a certain amount of courage. Once done, however, the wave of relief makes us whole again. What happens, however, when, after taking that step to make amends, our apology is not accepted and the chasm with the other party remains. Unlike God’s forgiveness, pardon from others is not automatically guaranteed, and while our immediate temptation is to backtrack on the apology, this only places us where we were before: on an island. We should instead accept the person’s need to heal. Should things not return to normal, we should be grateful for the time when things were good and respect the right of the other party to keep a distance. How blessed are we, then, that our Loving God guarantees forgiveness and immediate companionship once the priest grants us absolution!!!!!! As we approach Holy Week, let us take advantage of the Sacrament of Reconciliation to be back in the good Graces of our Loving Father and to benefit from His boundless Goodness.
