Welcome from the Chairman of St Patrick’s Festival Committee Here at Luton Irish Forum we are counting down the days to Luton St Patrick’s Festival 2022. It’s been a very long and difficult three years since 2019 when we held the last St Patrick’s Festival that wasn’t online. We’re delighted to be able to include GAA matches in the Festival programme this year and are looking forward to seeing some promising young Gaelic footballers playing at the GAA Blitz on Saturday 12th March. Parade and Music Day is once again on the Sunday, 13th March, and we have some star performers coming over from Ireland for you as well as plenty of home-grown talent! The Parade will start from Luton Irish Forum at 12 noon, an hour later than previous years in response to the wishes of many participants. The route is the same, see the map on page 11, so grab yourself a good viewing point to watch Irish and community groups, marching bands and a few favourite characters and entertainers. The Parade finishes with walking groups at Market Hill, right by the Outdoor Stage. Highlights of the Outdoor Stage are two stars of country – John McNicholl and Tracey McAuley New for this year and appealing to the younger generation especially is an After Party in The Hat Factory. We have the bands Missing the Ferry and Neck who will treat us to high-energy performances while the trad musicians will offer a more chilled vibe. The Mall Indoor Stage on that Sunday 13th will showcase Irish Dancing from local Irish Dancing schools and Ireland plus talented musicians and singers. A huge thank you to our sponsors, I hope you’ve noticed them on our publicity and on the on-stage banners today. Big thanks also to our parade participants, traders and performers – and our wonderful volunteers – without all of you, the Festival wouldn’t be anywhere near what it is today. Go raibh, míle maith agat agus sláinte – Thank you and good health to you Liz O’Halloran Chair, Luton St Patrick’s Festival Committee FESTIVAL GUIDE 2022 | 3

The Story of Saint Patrick Extract from an article by IrishCentral.com Saint Patrick is not only the Patron Saint of Ireland, he is also a Patron Saint of Australia, Nigeria, and Montserrat. St Patrick becomes the Patron Saint on 17th March in almost every country of the world, as people celebrate their ‘Irish-ness’ or links with Ireland through family and friends. Kidnapping and imprisonment A 16-year-old Patrick was captured in 403AD by an Irish raiding party somewhere along the west coast of what is known today as Great Britain. Most likely he was seized in Scotland because of its proximity to Ireland, although many would say Wales. Raiding parties, with warriors known as the ‘Picts’, would land somewhere on the coast and if the place was inhabited, frequently carry out a ‘smash and grab job’ of looting. They would grab young people, animals, clothes, weapons, whatever they wanted, and anyone opposing them would be killed. Patrick was snatched on one such raid and brought to Ireland as a slave. His job was to mind the sheep at night so wolves, wild dogs, foxes or even wild bears could not take them or their lambs. He did this on the slopes of the Slemish Mountains in County Antrim. FESTIVAL GUIDE 2022 | 39
Returning home Patrick grew into a young man and was able to escape from slavery six years later. He returned home and later began to realise that he had a vocation to the priesthood or a ministry of prayer in the church. Thinking often about the Irish people, he prayed for their conversion to ‘the faith’. Later, as he said himself in his ‘confessions’, he was tormented by the ‘Voice of the Irish’, who he had heard calling in the night: “Come back to us Patrick”. St Patrick’s great mission Once Patrick was ordained as a priest and had learned Latin and French, he asked to be sent as a missionary to Ireland, or as it was known then, Hiberniae, which means the ‘Land of Winter’. Patrick had a great missionary zeal and soon became Ireland’s second Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland. The Catholic Church in Ireland provided the first organised educational infrastructure for a society that previously had none. The monasteries were built and there were plenty of vocations to the priesthood and the religious life. The Irish monks became teachers and inventors. They were, in addition to leading the monastic life of prayer, also great builders and craftsmen. Given that there were so many vocations, they began to look at the possibilities of becoming missionaries not only to Europe but to the Americas. St Patrick died in Armagh in 461AD after 29 years as Archbishop in that Archdiocese which now has the Primacy of All Ireland. Saint Patrick and the shamrock It is said St Patrick used the three leaf shamrock to explain the concept of the Holy Trinity (the Father, Son and Holy Spirit) to the pagan Irish during the 5th Century. The tradition of wearing Shamrock on St Patrick’s Day can be traced back to the early 1700s. 40 | FESTIVAL GUIDE 2022

St Brigids Day Celebrating Irish Culture – with Irish film stars St Brigid is the female patron saint of Ireland. Her feast day is 1st February, about halfway between the winter solstice and the spring equinox, and which is often seen as the beginning of spring in Ireland. Luton Irish Forum members and guests celebrated St Brigid’s Day 2022 (Lá Fhéile Bríde) on the Saturday before, 29th January, with an online presentation about Irish Women in the movies and optional Afternoon Tea. Some 35 attendees watched the presentation including film clips on a big screen in the LIF centre with another 50+ joining online from home. Following a special message on behalf of the Irish Embassy given by Isobel O’Connor, First Secretary at the Embassy, attendees heard about Irish stars such as Maureen O’Hara, Brenda Fricker, Angeline Ball and Demi Isaac Oviawe. Making a St Brigid’s cross is a traditional ritual to celebrate the beginning of early spring in Ireland. The crosses are made of rushes that are pulled rather than cut and the crosses are hung by the door and in the rafters to protect the house from fire and evil. Traditionally, a new cross is made each year and the old one is burned to keep fire from the house. Many homes have several crosses preserved in the ceiling with the oldest ones blackened by years of hearth fires. Some believe that keeping a cross in the ceiling or roof is a good way to preserve the home from fire which was always a major threat in houses with thatch and wood roofs. St. Brigid and her cross are linked together by the story that she wove this form of cross at the death bed of either her father or a pagan lord, who upon hearing what the cross meant, asked to be baptised. One version goes as follows: “A pagan chieftain from the neighbourhood of Kildare was dying. Christians in his household sent for Brigid to talk to him about Christ. When she arrived the chieftain was raving. As it was impossible to instruct this delirious man, hopes for his conversion seemed doubtful. Brigid sat down at his bedside and consoled him. The dirt floor was strewn with rushes both for warmth and cleanliness. Brigid stooped down and started to weave them into a cross, fastening the points together. The sick man asked what she was doing. She began to explain the cross, and as she talked his delirium quieted and he questioned her with growing interest. Through her weaving, he converted and was baptised at the point of death. Since then the cross of rushes has been venerated in Ireland.” Wild Irish Women: Saint Brigid – Mary of the Gaels, irishamerica.com FESTIVAL GUIDE 2022 | 51
