ANNUAL REPORT PAGE 5 A LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Dear HSBA Members and Friends, As we celebrate our 110 th year, please accept my sincerest thanks for allowing me the opportunity to be your Executive Director. These past fourteen years have been a fabulous whirlwind, full of excitement, hard work, assorted challenges and partnerships that continue to be inspiring, unpredictable and always fun. From advocating for the restoration of the Kiosk to supporting the Harvard Square Zoning Petition, from installing Free Public Outside WiFi to advancing the stewardship of the public space, the HSBA has been a steady, reassuring and constant voice for its members, the Square and the greater Cambridge community. Our good work and our strong presence are only possible through your continued support and full participation. As we look back at 2019 , which began with our move to Two Brattle Square, we embraced several major construction projects, including the repair of the MBTA bus tunnels, the demolition of the old Urban Outfitter building and extensive street and sidewalk repair at the corner of Eliot and Bennett. We feted Passim’s 60 th anniversary, replete with Betsy Siggins receiving the key to the city and mourned the passing of four very special friends, Charlie Davidson, Robert Banker, Officer Ed Burke and Ifeanyi Menkiti. The Square will continue to grow, change, evolve, and prosper with a natural churn that is expected and accepted, as constant as the change of seasons. Businesses will open and close. When they do, we lament the loss of old favorites as we anticipate their replacements. In the next several weeks we will welcome nearly a dozen new businesses including, Spyce, Foumami, Dig, Wachusett Brewery, Allbirds, Everlane, Topdrawer, Stoked Pizza, The Smoke House Restaurant, Source and our first recreational marijuana retail store. By the end of this year, we will have our first new building since the 1980 ’s and if all goes as planned, the ground will be broken for another new building on Church Street. There is so much to look forward to in 2020 , from restoring the old to unveiling the new. We enthusiastically invite you to continue the journey with us as we cherish our past, embrace our present and envision a bright and prosperous future for our association, our members and above all, for Harvard Square. Thank you, Denise

Our latest statistics are as follows, and for the first time, include the linear frontage. (This new data was gathered as a result of the Harvard Square Zoning Petition which limits the linear frontage of banks and financial institutions to 25 linear feet.)

ANNUAL REPORT PAGE 19 THE KELLY CLARKSON SHOW Just days before the 12th Annual Taste of Chocolate Festival, we received a call from a producer at the Kelly Clarkson Show in Los Angeles who had seen our event featured on Boston.com. They asked us to create a ‘mini’ chocolate festival at a downtown hotel. Our team and participating businesses stepped into high gear and made it happen! The display featured all of participants and Harvard Square’s very own, Jen Kurani of Cabot’s Candy, who was interviewed. I just wanted to take a quick moment to thank you for your incredible support. The HSBA creates a true community of businesses in Harvard Square - no easy feat! Without you, I wouldn't feel as connected as I do to other business owners and to the community at large. Your events and outreach not only drive traffic, they create the feeling that the Square is the place to be. There is a sense of fun and liveliness that exists here that would not happen on its own -and for that we at Zinnia and Cabot's Candy sincerely thank you! And of course -our deepest thanks for your kind recommendation of Cabot's to the Kelly Clarkson Show. We truly love being a part of the Chocolate Festival every year, and were honored to represent the Square and our business on such an extraordinary platform! It was a once in a lifetime experience that we wouldn't have had without your involvement, support and encouragement. Thank you again for all that you do! Warmest regards, Jen

ANNUAL REPORT PAGE 21 THE EVOLUTION OF A POP-UP ROCKY HORROR SHOW Presented by Moonbox Productions Thursday, October 17 th - Saturday, November 2 nd, 2019 In early October 2019 , Asana Partners presented Harvard Square Business Association member, Moonbox Productions, with access to 25 Brattle Street, a vacant store front in the heart of the Square. Within a few short weeks, the location transformed into Dr. Frank-N-Furter’s mansion for a live theatrical experience of The Rocky Horror Show. On opening night the HSBA hosted a Rocky Horror party with live music and a beer garden. Over the course of its run, over two thousand people came up to the lab!
ANNUAL REPORT PAGE 22 THE EVOLUTION OF A POP-UP December 7th – January 17 th Due to the overwhelming success of Rocky and the community’s desire for unique interactive experiences, Asana extended access to the space to the HSBA. In short order, HSBA members responded and by mid-January, 37 eclectic and innovative activations were produced. Santa Claus Jazz Band Everyone Loves Latkes Schoolhouse Rock Live Santa Claus Jazz Band Concert, 16 wine tastings hosted by Vintnicity, multiple nonprofit informational sessions conducted by Harvard Art Museums, Cambridge Office for Tourism and the First Church in Cambridge, Holiday Carolers Concert, Cambridge Art Association Small Works Sale. Ceramic Pottery Sale, 13 th Annual Everyone Loves Latkes Tasting Event, Moleskine Demos, Moonbox Productions Cabaret: A Night of Debauchery with Peter Mills, Live Performance of School House Rock., Photography Exhibit hosted by Ocean River Institute, Inner Space Meditation Class and a Silk Screen Demo from Maud Morgan Arts.
ANNUAL REPORT PAGE 23 THE EVOLUTION OF A POP-UP Opportunities like this are so important for nonprofit organizations with small budgets - they give us a low investment chance to engage with new audiences in an informal setting. During our one-day pop-up at 25 Brattle Street, we sold two artworks and engaged with approximately two dozen visitors - almost all of whom were previously unaware of the Cambridge Art Association! -Erin Becker, Cambridge Art Association We’re rarely afforded the opportunity to take the museums out of the building and it was great to engage with people to remind them where we were and that we were open to them 7 days a week. -John Connolly, Harvard Art Museums There was great benefit in COT's pop-up sessions at 25 Brattle. The experience helped our office serve the local community as well as visitors to the Square. Locals in particular told us they were thrilled to see (and hear!) a vacant storefront come alive during the Friday afternoons before Christmas. -Breanna Caires, Cambridge Office for Tourism It was a fantastic crowd and a new space for our MMA community brought to us by HSBA, an amazing organization and partnership that brings community to Harvard Square! Especially in a time of transition in the historical neighborhood, organizations coming together is paramount. -Cory Shea, Maud Morgan Arts The dark days of January were brightened when 25 Brattle Street afforded the Ocean River Institute the opportunity to cover the walls with gorgeous landscape and seascape photographs by Dan Wells. -Rob Moir, Ocean River Institute This was Moonbox’s very first show in a “found space”. The production received a hugely enthusiastic response from the community, completely selling out most of its shows to the point that we had to (sadly) turn people away during our final weekend. - Sharman Altshuler, Moonbox Productions It was such a gift to be able to use the 25 Brattle space for our wine education pop-up classes this winter. I think it made each of them feel more in touch with the inner workings of Harvard Square. Thanks so much, Asana, for allowing us to occupy 25 Brattle for a while. -Jessica Sculley, Vintnicity
