The City of Perth has supported the Perth Fashion Festival since its inception in 1998. In the Perth Fashion Festival’s 21 year history, this event has proven itself to provide significant benefit not only to the local economy, but to the whole fashion industry in Western Australia. The festival cements WA as a fashion destina- tion, and in 2019, Perth city as a truly unique shopping precinct. Nowhere else do you have the extensive range of retail, food and beverage offerings in one convenient location. In the coming years, we’ll see even more diver- sity in offerings in the city, as major renovations to our shopping malls come to fruition, further enhancing the local retail landscape. I encourage everyone to visit the city this spring, and immerse yourself in the Perth Fashion Festival’s 2019 calendar of events. Andrew Hammond Chair Commissioner, City of Perth 2

SUNDAY 8 & 15 SEPTEMBER BRAZILIAN DANCE YAGAN SQUARE The 7th of September is a national day celebrating Brazil’s inde- pendence from Portugal called ‘Sete de Septembro.’ It is a day of festivities celebrating all aspects of their culture, history, fashion, sports, food and of course what Brazilians are so famous for: their music and dancing! Suddenly we think of feathers, drums, carnival and samba, but in fact one of Brazil’s most widely danced and popular styles is a couple dance called Forró! Forró originated in the north east of Brazil and was characterised by many couples dancing in embrace ‘2 steps this way and 2 steps that way’ to the sounds of a ‘Trio’ band of a piano accordion, triangle and drum. While keeping true to it’s folk roots, the dance and the music has evolved into many dynamic and diverse styles danced all over Brazil and now all over the world with a vibrant community here in Perth: ‘Vamos forrozear (Let’s Forró!)’ and ‘Let the dance speak.’ Visit www.letthedancespeak.com for more information. 19
