Antony Phillipson Her Majesty’s Consul General 845 Third Avenue New York, NY 10022 antony.phillipson@fco.gov.uk Tel: 212 745 0412 gov.uk/world/usa @AJPhillipson 18 April, 2018 Dear Friends, As an Honorary Patron of the Queen Elizabeth 11 Garden, it is my privilege to welcome you to this gala dinner in aid of the Garden. Since I arrived in New York last November I have seen that the generosity of the Garden’s patrons, including those gathered here tonight, have meant that this unique site of remembrance and peace is in an excellent position to achieve its conservancy target and sustain the Garden in perpetuity. Over the years the Garden has welcomed a number of other Commonwealth countries to the fold, making it a permanent place of remembrance for the fallen of their respective nations. In my short time here, I have seen how much the Garden matters to people. I am inspired by the dedication and passion that the Garden board and its supporters and volunteers bring to their work. I am moved by the memories and the courage of the families of 9/11 victims. The Garden continues to be hugely important. It is a terrible thing to grieve, but to do so united is surely to alleviate that grief, if only by a little. The Garden has become an indelible part of the landscape of downtown Manhattan. For the Commonwealth community, it is certainly one of the most important features of the city. Each of tonight’s honourees has demonstrated significant leadership in their field and helped advance the fundamental values that the Garden supports. My congratulations to John Catsimatidis, Chairman & CEO of the Red Apple Group, who receives tonight’s Alexander Hamilton Award for Leadership; Lt General Ramesh Hagali, Former Deputy Chief of Army Staff, Indian Army who receives the Leadership Award for the Fight against Global Terrorism; Jamie Forese, President of Citigroup and CEO of the Institutional Clients Group who receives The Global Corporate Leadership Award; Van Hipp, Jr., Chaiman of American Defense International Inc. who receives the Award for Leadership in National Security; Doug Elix, AO Retired Senior VP & Group Executive, IBM who receives the Global Leadership Award for Business & Philanthropy; and Christina Valentine, Founder of All in All the Time Foundation who receives The McGarahan Award for Heroism. I would like to welcome Guest Speaker, The Honourable Stephen Harper, former Prime Minister of Canada. Many thanks to Gotham Hall for hosting us tonight. My personal thanks and admiration on this occasion to all those who have worked so hard to bring us this far including my fellow Consuls General, the Garden officers and Board, and the team who manage the site all year round. I hope you have a wonderful evening. Best, Antony Phillipson Her Majesty’s Consul General in New York

The garden continues to strengthen the historic ties of friendship and unity between the United States, the Commonwealth countries and the United Kingdom. I applaud the dedication and commitment of the Queen Elizabeth II September 11th Garden for its leadership, staff and everyone involved in preserving and maintaining the ideals of freedom and growth. ALLIED FORCES FOUNDATION (AFF) is proud to be associated with the Queen Elizabeth II September 11th Garden and support the amazing honorees this evening. Allied Forces Foundation (AFF) is a British-American foundation that works to raise awareness and funding for wounded service personnel, veterans and their families, particularly those affected by the conflicts of Iraq and Afghanistan. A primary focus of AFF is to reinvigorate the spirit of comradeship and teamwork that so many wounded, ill and injured (WII) serving personnel and veterans miss when forced to return to a desk job or civilian life. This is achieved through enabling bringing together veterans from the two nations in different challenges around the world like the upcoming Cateran Yomp (a 24 hike across the Scottish Highlands) in Scotland in June, Marine Corp Marathon (MCM) in Washington DC, Appalachian Yomp from Harper’s Ferry to Gettysburg, and Denmark Warrior Week in Copenhagen. These challenges deliver an opportunity for WII to come together with other veterans who are facing similar experiences. It enhances the US/UK relationship between WII personnel from nations who have fought together and now recover together. 2017 AFF team on the Cateran Yomp and Marine Corp Marathon (MCM) at the start point with US, UK, Canada, Australia, Denmark, Ukraine and Georgia wounded, ill and injured and care givers www.alliedforcesfoundation.org Charity Information Allied Forces Foundation: Tax ID: 45-2048658. | Virginia Registered Charity No.: CHR.0055729.
