Autumn skies & pumpkin pies… OCTOBER 2020 - ISSUE # 335 INSIDE WOLRA Summer is over and we are moving into the beautiful Fall weather in the County. Our enjoyment is still being impacted by COVID, still among us after all these months. As we have recently seen, we in WOTL are not immune to COVID. As a community we cannot let our guard down, we cannot get complacent and we must continue to follow the Provincial regulations and protocols. We are all familiar with the protocols, but they bear repeating…hand washing, sanitizing, wearing of masks indoors and maintaining 2 meters (6 feet) of physical distancing. It is not rocket science yet, we have experienced cases here and in our Health Unit, and cases are increasing rapidly in our Province and across Canada. We have to double down and make sure to follow the protocols – yes, it can be a royal pain the butt, however, we have to be smart and do the right thing to prevent any virus transfer to our neighbours and to protect ourselves. Recently, due to surging cases in Ontario, Premier Ford reduced the gathering sizes from 50 to 10 indoors and 100 to 25 outdoors. So, what does that mean for us here in WOTL – we have had clarification from the Province via our local Health Unit and we have reduced the numbers of people in the Rec Centre to 10 per room. This means that we can have up to 10 in the main hall, up to ten in the card room and of course, nothing changes for the gym with a maximum of one person, snooker room with a maximum of 4, and the Library with a maximum of two; these do not change because social distancing prevents higher numbers. The lower gathering numbers are in place for the next 4 weeks. This will delay the start-up of darts, card elimination, and indoor shuffleboard that were planned to start in the near future. We are hopeful that the gathering numbers will go up and we will be able to offer more activities in the Rec Centre – in the meantime, please hang in with us. Remember, we don’t make the rules and regulations, we don’t get any input into them, we just have to follow them for the safety of the people and the community at large. Note: If 2 or more gatherings are taking place in the Rec Centre, the participants of each activity must not commingle with any of the participants from another activity and that the Frontier staff are not included in any gathering numbers. One final point that rose often in recent days and weeks while there was a COVID case in our community. COVID is a terrible disease and it can be fatal, so it has created fear and severe anxiety in people. We, as a Board, do not wish to contribute to these fears, but we, again must follow the regulations. COVID is a Public Health issue, not a WOLRA Board issue. Even if we knew that there were confirmed cases in the community, we are under the same restrictions and laws as the Public Health Unit. They cannot divulge the names or the locations of any confirmed COVID cases, other than, that the case is located in the Hastings Prince Edward Health Unit. So, when you ask a Board member, due to Privacy laws, we do not know any more than the rumours that circulate, and even if we did, we couldn’t divulge any- thing. Many people have stated that they do not agree with these rules – to the point of screaming, at me and other Board members, in our faces and over the phone. Please understand that COVID is a Public Health issue and we as a Board just implement Provincial regulations. Beyond hoping and praying that everyone one is safe, there is nothing else we can do without violating the law and possibly subjecting ourselves and our community to fines and possible law suits. So, please, we as Board members are your friends and neighbours, and we are doing all we can to get us through these difficult times. Continued next page... Autumn skies & pumpkin pies… OCTOBER 2020 - ISSUE # 335 Changing subjects…we are coming to the end of the summer and our 2020 projects to improve the community. I am sure you have seen an improved Rec Centre, inside and out, the creation of a parkette on the corner of Empire and Prince Edward, and walkways and trees in the Park north of the tennis courts. We have a newly constructed Outdoor Living Centre and resurfaced shuffleboard courts, we have a refurbished pool table and much more. In fact, there has been so much going on that we have written a separate article on the subject that can be found on page 11. This article will describe what we have accomplished this year and what we plan to complete next year in great detail – please have a look. All the best to everyone, enjoy the Fall and please be kind and stay safe. Derek Mendham - WOLRA Board of Directors * PLEASE * WARNING! Autumn skies & pumpkin pies… OCTOBER 2020 - ISSUE # 335 OUR COMMUNITY PROJECTS - WHERE ARE WE AND WHERE ARE WE GOING? Summer is rapidly going and Fall is here. We have been working on the community projects that were defined in our WBE Support Agreement for some months now. Some indoor projects were begun on time and some of the outdoor ones were either delayed or otherwise impacted by COVID and the safety rules, regulations and protocols that have been put in place. The good news, however, is that we have made great strides over the summer and things are looking different in WOTL. I am taking this opportunity to tell you exactly where we are in our projects, what is the plan for next Spring, and most importantly to thank the many people who have helped to pull this off so far. So, where are we? In the Rec Centre… • The electrical, climate control and washroom issues in the Rec Centre (RC) have been completed. • The RC has been refreshed, painted and the floor deep cleaned and polished. New window dressings have been purchased for the main hall and will be installed shortly, as will a new bar counter top. • The pool table has been completely refurbished to its’ original specifications. Outside the RC… • Phase One of the landscaping improvements has been completed including new and reconstructed flower beds, removal of dead plants and the installation of new drought resistant, native plants. • The large wooden garden in front of the RC was removed and replaced with an attractive stone garden structure. In addition, drainage was corrected and redone and the interlock driveway levelled. • Postal kiosk landscaping was removed and redone as well as the interlock pathway. • The shuffleboard courts have been resurfaced, but it looks like the tennis court will not be redone until next year, unless the Contractor can still fit us in this year) The Parkette (corner of Empire and Prince Edward)… The Parkette (corner of Empire and Prince Edward) was established, a garden defined and created and most importantly for future landscaping, water has been brought and permanently established in the Parkette. The Park (north of the tennis courts)… On the west half of the park, the crushed stone walkways have been completed and decorative trees have been planted. The Outdoor Living Centre… The structure has been constructed, the concrete floor installed and electricity will be installed in the last week of September. There has been a significant amount of effort and work done, despite issues thrown at us with COVID, by many people who deserve our thanks and they deserve a huge thank you and a shout out here, so here goes… Thank you to all members of the Board who have all worked hard to get to where we are…while navigating COVID. A special recognition goes to Rick Stevens and Gerry Stewart who managed the RC and Parkette projects and Park projects respectively. Continued next page... Autumn skies & pumpkin pies… OCTOBER 2020 - ISSUE # 335 The committees that were established during the past winter have worked long and hard and have done some great work for the community. The Park Committee, whose Board liaison is Gerry Stewart, the Chair and Project Manager is Dale Smith and is made up of Alison Whittaker, Helen and Roy Hood, Chris Peers, Chuck Martin, Thomas Drysdale and Maryse Migué. Maryse started us on the right track with her sketch of our original ideas. A special thank you to Dale Smith for his expertise and attention to detail that will ensure we have a beautiful park when completed. Another shoutout goes to Rick Stevens, the Board liaison, and Mary Lynn Stevens, the Project Manager for the Rec Centre Beautification and the establishment of the Parkette. The committee members who developed the plan are: Gail Post and John Langschmidt, Dale Kerr, Linda Tierney, Elaine Jackson and Tom Drysdale. Also a major thank you to Roy Perkin for his lead role in the development of the Outdoor Living Centre. Roy, not only designed the building and developed projected costs, but assisted in the supervising of its construction. And finally, we have to thank Frontier, not only for funding the work, but to the employees. We would not have been able to accomplish these projects with- out the solid help and support from Peter, Renie, Bruce and Chelsea. Without these folks, nothing gets accomplished – a hearty thank you! So, what is on the books for next Spring? Outside the RC • Completion of the stone planters in front of the building. Completion of the RC landscaping around the entire building, including the pool and the Outdoor Living Centre. The Parkette • Completion of the landscaping including trees, walkway and benches. The Park • Completion of the east side of the park with crushed stone walkways, trees, and benches. • Completion of the central garden and installation of perennials. • Start of the Adopt-a-Tree/Bench program The Outdoor Living Centre • Completion of the building (gable ends, ceilings etc. and all electrical. • Purchase and installation of furnishings such as tables, chairs, sunscreens, BBQ’s etc. So, we still have a way to go, but everything is funded. We may need more help in our email campaign since the date for the Approval of Subdivision meeting has been moved to October. We would like to thank all the volunteers and the community at large for supporting our efforts this year. We have had a complex and busy summer but with great help from everyone involved, we have made progress towards an improved WOTL community. Remember, we are all on the same page here; we want to make this community the best it can possibly be for all our residents. We look forward to next Spring / Summer and the completion of our projects; and hopefully, some new projects that will benefit our community. This is Ann Mau’s “baby” and she is doing a lot of research into the technicalities of having something similar in our community. “I am exchanging emails with one equipment company. I sent them pictures of the park area that would be ideal for our purposes. I have asked for suggestions and plans with prices. Hope I'll get a reply soon.” UPDATE: Prices and suggestions have been received and Denise Frenette and Mary Lynn Stevens have offered to help Ann with the grant applications. Go Team! In addition, Ann has supplied the following information, images and video: SENIORS FITNESS PARK Wouldn’t it be great to have a well-equipped park area where we could all exercise in a relaxed environment? We could choose equipment that would offer a wide variety of activities that help seniors regain lost agility and can increase strength, balance and cardiovascular health. It should be easy and fun to use with instructional decals on each equipment piece. Improved Health The studies have been done, the data is in, and news stories abound on the benefits of seniors exercising. Muscle mass and bone density increase, stamina is improved, it slows dementia, improves flexibility, and balance. An outdoor fitness package can produce dramatic overall health improvements in a relatively short period of time. It would also help prevent falls. It is an extremely cost-effective way to improve the lives of older adults. (Excerpts from https://greatoutdoorgym.ca/retirement- community/ have been modified for this text.) Autumn skies & pumpkin pies… OCTOBER 2020 - ISSUE # 335 2022 & BEYOND We have a listing of 7 potential future capital projects on our website currently and these can reviewed at http:// www.wolra.ca/docs/wolraMeetings/ SuggestionsForFutureCapitalProjects.pdf. These include an emergency generator, augmentation of park areas, viability of enlarging Rec Centre, augmentation of outdoor living centre, resistance pool and augmentation of pool area. Our intention is to poll the community in the coming months to get a ranking or priority listing of what we all would like to see added to our community. We received a couple of suggestions this past month that included suggestions for a dog park and a hot tub but in order for us to objectively judge the merits of any proposal someone needs to do the leg work necessary to price this out and detail location etc. Any volunteers? As you saw on the previous page, Ann Mau raised the intriguing prospect of a seniors play ground. There appears to be an opportunity to perhaps get funding (a grant) for some or all of this and Ann, Denise Frenette and Mary Lynn Stevens are pursuing this on our behalf. Al Smith, Communications Director, WOLRA Board MEMORIAL TREE PLANTED IN THE PARKETTE Elaine and Gord Jackson donated a beautiful Autumn Blaze Maple Tree in memory of their son Bruce, a talented arborist who loved trees, especially this variety . In his short time here, Bruce found happiness in this welcoming community. The tree was planted in the parkette at Prince Edward Drive and Empire Blvd. Not only will it be a memory of Bruce, but will also add to the beauty of our community. Maximum 10 people. See you there! We could think of it as “It could happen to any of us”, and it just might before this Chris Peers pandemic is over. In these difficult times, some of us may, in spite of our best efforts not to, somehow acquire COVID anyway. Maybe we got lax in our attentiveness, after all this has gone on for a long time and it happens; who among us is not guilty of that? Please; be kind, and treat others as you would like to be treated yourself. The last thing any of us want is for a family member, a neighbour or a friend to feel ostracized either for being ill, or for being a responsible citizen by self-isolating to protect others ‘just in case’. Autumn skies & pumpkin pies… OCTOBER 2020 - ISSUE # 335 FROM INSIDE THE BUBBLE I often tell people that if it weren't for the six figure salary and generous benefits package this job would really suck. Recent events have driven home that point such that I am prepared to risk offending people. Some folks have felt the need to share their opinions aggressively by phoning or dropping in on random WOLRA Board members. While everyone is entitled to their opinions, just know that when the Board makes decisions on behalf of the community it is done with the best interests of the community in mind. There are 10 Board members who serve to balance and counter balance all of these decisions and when we do make a decision it is with the unanimous support of all of us. The fact that a resident does not agree with any particular decision is one’s right. That right, however, does not entitle one to call and share one’s displeasure with that decision. By doing so one sucks the enthusiasm for this community right out of us. I know, when I am confronted with this behaviour I am tied up in knots for several days. I suspect the "offenders " will not see themselves in this note but be aware that if calls and emails begin to go unanswered you may be one. This is a wonderful, supportive community where kind words and gestures go a long way toward improving our lives together. We are the folks, in whose company, we are going to grow old. Let's look for ways to give one another the benefit of the doubt, and ways we can be helpful to one another. There will be more COVID cases in our future. I hope we can find it in our hearts to suppress our fears and look for ways we can be supportive. Al Smith, Communications Director, WOLRA Board WE’RE HERE FOR A GOOD TIME, NOT FOR A LONG TIME So, let us do what we can to improve not only our lifestyles during the time we are here, but also the value of our homes for when we move on to our next adventures. ‘Here for a Good Time’ by Canadian band Trooper https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0- _d79xN45U&list=RD0-_d79xN45U&index=1 Before you click on the above link, turn up the volume and get ready for smiling, singing along and feeling good! Autumn skies & pumpkin pies… OCTOBER 2020 - ISSUE # 335 CHILDREN’S CHRISTMAS STOCKING FUND As Coordinator for the Children’s Christmas Stocking Fund, I would like to thank you so much for your overwhelming response for funds to support our worthy cause. As some of you may not be aware of, the purpose of the Stocking Fund Committee is every year to purchase at Christmas time some of the necessities for infants and children that are sometimes overlooked because of the cost of living for financially struggling families. This year is especially difficult because of what is happening with our economy. We specifically purchase for children of families who make use of the Wellington Storehouse Foodbank on the recommendation of Linda Downey. These families are most times the working poor who struggle to make ends meet because of low paying jobs or cut-backs this year, and because the cost of living is quite high here in the County. Last year we purchased pyjamas and socks for 111 infants and children. Hard to believe in this affluent County in this day and age. Once our purchases are complete, whatever balance is left in our account is turned over to the Food- bank for the purchase of milk and diapers, etc. for infants and toddlers over the winter months when funds could be dwindling at the Foodbank. We are still accepting donations that can be remitted to Claire Aubé 613-581-7911, Helene Cameron 399-3762, Diane Dumais 399-1432 or e-transfer forwarded to our Trust Account wolratreasurer@gmail.com. Receipts for Income Tax purposes will be sent out through the Foodbank in the New Year. We will also provide you with a summary of purchasing and balance of monies turned over to the Foodbank. Please support as best you can; thank you. Diane Dumais, Coordinator, Children’s Christmas Stocking Fund Photo on right is from 2019 Wellington on the Lake Residents’ Association 22

Autumn skies & pumpkin pies… OCTOBER 2020 - ISSUE # 335 THE SPANISH FLU It was the fall of 1918 and the beautiful new Regent Theatre was about to launch on Picton’s Main Street, when suddenly the Spanish Flu hit the entire world with apocalyptic intensity. 50 million people died across the globe—50,000 were in Canada. With dozens of County victims, the Medical Officer of Health issued a shutdown order for public venues, like billiard halls, taverns...and theatres. To read the complete article, click on link below: https://lifeaulait.com/born-in-a-pandemic-1918-the-regent-theatre-raises-the- curtain-again/? fbclid=IwAR0eRR88WaFS_fb49IuOXERFz_8wSpefM9BI8NPEsmvWSGoNiNdr5LkSnVA The following information came from The Prince Edward Historical Society: 65 people died in the flu’s brief reign here in PEC, between September 1918 and January 1921. Thirty- eight of those people, over two thirds of those who died, were aged between 13 and 40; it was startling to learn that no one in that age group died in the County in the five months before and the five months after that period. The relative isolation of the community may have contributed to the low levels of mortality. There were a couple of interesting stories behind the figures such as the young Picton auctioneer who was the first person to die, and the seven-year-old daughter of the Telegraph Island lighthouseman. The following is from an article in the Belleville Intelligencer, August 2019, Luke Hendry: Melissa Wakeling of Glanmore: “The pandemic hit here (Hastings County) in the fall of 1918, shortly before the war ended. A second wave came in the spring of 1919, with a third in 1920. There was no effective vaccine available and no antibiotics available to treat secondary infections. People scrambled to prevent the spread of the virus. There was no church. Schools were closed. Public gatherings were discouraged. There were no telephone operators left to operate the switchboards so they started to ask for volunteers, specifically children, to run messages.” POSTER FROM 1918 Wellington on the Lake Residents’ Association 24
